Stock Up:
SS Wilmer Flores – A-Savannah – 19/yrs. old – Flores went over 100 at bats on Tuesday and has impressed once again at the A level: .327/.376/.535/.911. He especially has stepped up power wise in the last month and seems to be primed for the next level. The only shortstop prospect ahead of him is Reese Havens, who’s playing second base lately. If you live around the Savannah area, get a game in quick. Flores won’t be around long.
Luis J. Rivera:
The Mets cut Rivera on May 4. Here’s what I had on him on “The Keepers”:
65. Luis Rivera – OF – low-A – 23/yrs.
Rivera was drafted by the Anaheim Angels, in the 5th round of the 2004 draft. He hails from San Juan, Puerto Rico and played high school ball at Ramon Vill Mayo, in Rio Piedras.
Rivera played three years in the Angels organization and never got out of rookie ball. His best stats were in 2005, when he hit .280, in 132 at bats.
He somehow wound up in the Toronto organization in 2008 and batted .182 for their low-A team.
The Mets picked him up for the 2009 season, where he played exclusively for Brooklyn. He hit .299/.402/.443/.845 in 221 at bats and, all of a sudden, he looks like the best pick up the Mets made all year.
Rivera was 12th in the league in batting average, 3rd in OBS, 18th in slugging percentage, and 10th in OPS.
Forecast:
First of all, you’re not going to find much written about Rivera. He had a nice high school career, followed by four disappointing years in organized ball. He’s constantly confused with the other Luis Rivera, who is an infielder that plays a couple of levels up higher. Omar & Co. (or was that Tony B?) have a habit of picking up failures from other teams and trying to turn them into, at least, a minor league success. So far, this one looks real good, but I want to see another year before thinking this might be an outfield prospect. My guess, due to his age and experience, he will go straight to Lucy in the spring.
Draft Day Details:
For the second consecutive year, Major League Baseball will hold day one festivities of the First-Year Player Draft from Studio 42 at MLB Network in Secaucus , New Jersey. The Draft will begin live on MLB Network and MLB.com on Monday, June 7th at 7:00 p.m. (ET), and Baseball Commissioner Allan H. (Bud) Selig will announce each of the first round selections.
Like last year, the 2010 Draft will span three days. For day one on June 7th, MLB Network and MLB.com will provide live pick-by-pick coverage during the first round as well as the first compensation round. The intervals between selections will last five minutes during the first round and one minute during the compensation round. The Draft will resume at 12:00 p.m. (ET) on both Tuesday, June 8th and Wednesday, June 9th via conference call from MLB headquarters in New York City . - link
so, here’s the deal…. I work all year, every day, getting ready for draft day, so I can be online and churn out the info on the picks… and guess what? Draft Day One is on my 40th wedding anniversary.
Mets 2010 Pick:
7. New York Mets. This has been praised as a pitching-heavy draft, and that’s good, because this is another team that needs more pitching. Jeurys Familia and Kyle Allen are struggling, Jennry Mejia is in the bullpen, and a guy like Brad Holt has not broke out like expected. This team also should show its fan base that they will spend in the draft, something they have not done in a few years. Landing the top high school arm fits both “needs”. This Ain’t Aye Ball:
Remember all the hoopla about the “Savannah 5”, the killer rotation that all graduated to St. Lucie this season together? Well, four of them joined Scott Moviel to comprise the most talked about Mets minor league rotation since Generation K.
The results so far this season after five times around the rotation?
Scott Moviel: 1-2, 7.01, 1.56
Kyle Allen: 2-2, 7.15, 1.94
Jeurys Familia: 0-1, 7.71, 1.71
Robert Carson: 0-3, 8.27, 2.63
Eric Beaulac: 0-1, 5.17, 2.04
Yes, it’s early, but the Mets have already added SP Angel Cuan to the roster, who went 3.1-IP, 0.00, 0.90… and there’s still Chris Schwinden (4-G, 1-0, 2.16, 1.26) waiting in the wings for his turn. Stay tuned for some changes.

I love it when blog guys and authors of articles write about prospects. they write from the statistical side of the paper they do not see games when dropped fly balls playing out of position and lack of hustle can mean an awful lot to these young guys. after all every bloop single is a line drive in the paper.
Luis Rivera is an excellent player. Everybody believes in his talent. Not everybody is gonna make it to the MLB. There are mny excellent baseball player who don't get the recognition they deserve.It doesn't mean they're not good. It's easy to write a blog based on what you read on the internet. Go to the games. I'm sure you haven't seen him playing lately,and he is playing. The Mets released many good players including Nick Giarraputo.What a shame they released those two.

actually, I wouldn't know if it is easy to write a blog based on what I read on the internet... I attend minor league games regularly and know many of the players... incluidng Luis, who I helped via Facebook to find a gig in baseball after the Mets cut him... say hello to him and try not to judge people like me too early
