I stood there and watched how sad he looked in his Savannah rehab for the playoffs last year... and the Mets official next to me that I knew for years turned and said to me "what a greta pitcher... thsi is so sad. He's toast.
And then the team asked for the disruption be stopped and to cancel his second rehab start- the team was playing for the championship and really didn't need someone that wasn't 100% and was participating in an internal PR stunt to hopefully make the fans fell he would actually go back on the Queens mound that year.
You would have written the same thing.
On a good note, I was wrong, and thank God I was. This was one of the top moments in my Mets history that also started in 1962.

His press conference tonight made him an icon.
I think he became an icon about 15 minutes before that press conference, Mack.
