Flash - Mets Seek Ruling From MLB on First Round Pick

According to John Harpur of the New York Daily News, the Mets are seeking a ruling from Major League Baseball to protect their first round draft pick. Since they originally had the #10 pick, which was protected, but moved to #11 when Pittsburgh failed to sign their first round pick, they are asking MLB to restore the protection and to designate their second round pick as the one to be lost in the event they sign a free agent who declined a qualifying offer. (Who might that be, I wonder.) Thus far they have not received a reply to their request.

That was the first thing I thought of when I saw where they were drafting last October. In theory it would be a serious gaffe if they waited thing long for clarity and it resulted in them not pursuing other free agents receiving qualifying offers; however, I think we all know that was never going to happen unless they slipped to late January without a team.

My assumption is they are referring to Mike Bourne, but it would be interesting if they are considering kyle losche was well.
