MLB Draft Insider - Mock

No. 1: Houston Astros
NamePositionSchool2013 Slot
Carlos RodonLHPN.C. State$7.7904M
I’m still sticking with Rodon here, though it is far from the lock it was say..three months ago. It’s early (no kidding), but I think there are a lot of options here, including Tyler Kolek, Trea Turner and Jeff Hoffman.

No. 2: Miami Marlins
NamePositionSchool2013 Slot
Tyler KolekRHPShepherd High School (Tex.)$6.7084M
I’m sure some are expecting Jeff Hoffman to be the name here, but Kolek makes too much sense when you consider what Scouting Director Stan Meek likes to do. I’m sure they’d love Rodon to fall here, but I just don’t see it happening (yet)

No. 3: Chicago White Sox
NamePositionSchool2013 Slot
Jeff HoffmanRHPEast Carolina$5.6264M
Hoffman needs to show more consistency — he was pretty much terrible last week against Marshall — but with a fastball that touches 97 and a plus-plus breaking ball at times, he’s the best pitcher in this draft not named Rodon.

No. 4: Chicago Cubs
NamePositionSchool2013 Slot
Alex JacksonC/3B/RFRancho Bernardo HS (Calif.)$4.5444M
Jackson is the best prep player in the class, and while the Cubs need pitching, I think Jackson’s plus hit-tool and plus power-tool would be too tempting to pass on.

No. 5: Minnesota Twins
NamePositionSchool2013 Slot
Trea TurnerC/3B/OFN.C. State$3.787M
Remember, it’s a mock, not a board; so while I think Turner is more of a mid-first round talent, the industry disagrees with me. Minnesota could take Turner and hope the speed and average to above-average defese (depending on who you ask) could fast track.

No. 6: Seattle Mariners
NamePositionSchool2013 Slot
Tyler BeedeRHPVanderbilt$3.516M
Beede has seen his stock rise as much as any pitcher in this class in large part because he’s throwing strikes at a much more efficient level, and Seattle’s lack of pitching at the higher-levels would make him an ideal fit.

No. 7: Philadelphia Phillies
NamePositionSchool2013 Slot
Jacob GatewoodSSClovis High School (Calif.)$3.264M
Before anyone starts complaining, yes, I am aware that the Phillies took a shortstop in th first-round, and yes, I’m aware that he’s a good one. But Gatewood’s enormous raw power is something the Phillies always covet, and if they both develop and can stay at shortstop, they have a nice little problem on their hands.

No. 8: Colorado Rockies
NamePositionSchool2013 Slot
Erick FeddeRHPUNLV$3.1378M
Fedde has been very good to begin this year with a mid 90′s fastball and improving command of all three of his pitches. The Rockies have some talented young hurlers, but with that ballpark, you can never have too many.

No. 9: Toronto Blue Jays
NamePositionSchool2013 Slot
Derek FisherOFVirginia$3.0296M
The Blue Jays have two picks in the top 11 this year, and with the first selection, I think they could go with a bat like Fisher, even if he provides little to no value in the field.

No. 10: New York Mets
NamePositionSchool2013 Slot
Grant HolmesRHPConway High School (S.C.)2.9214M
Over the last couple of years, the Mets have gone the prep bat route with picks in this area. They could do that again this year, but I think Holmes would be great value here with three 60 pitches, though there isn’t much projection.
