Matt Harvey ‏@MattHarvey33  - 2014 Harvey day will happen

Mack  - Obviously, Harvey’s arm feels wonderful after his back-to-back throwing session. It’s also interesting that he sent this tweet on early Saturday which Mets Prospect Hub Chief Tej called ‘Thorsday’. There may be a little ego tug here by Harvey who is probably missing all the ‘Harvey Day references when he pitched last year.

The bottom line here is that he intends on pitching sometime this year, which could create the Mets version of an Obama-Putin standoff (BTW… which one is Obama because that’s the one that will lose this battle).

Me? I really would like him to chill until pitchers/catchers in 2015.

There are a lot of Mets fans that are getting their first look at utility infield/outfielder Eric Campbell and they like what they see. Long time Mack’s Mets readers know that I have been high on this guy for years now and it’s great to see he’s finally getting himself some press.

The Boston College prospect was drafted in the 8th round of the 2008 draft and 2014 represents the 7th year as a Met (2,076-AB, .279/.376/.409/.785, 365-K, 292-BB). There’s little power here (40/HR), but frankly, he plays many positions (210x-1B, 188x-3B, 144x-LF, 74-CF, 41-RF, 2x-2B, 1x-P) well and doesn’t embarrass himself with a bat in his hand. The 6-3 bats right and, so far, is in the lead for a UT slot come spring.

Collette-chat –

Comment From Percy - Nick Franklin to __________________ for _______________?

Jason Collette: Tacoma , playing time

Comment From Wily Mo Money Mo Problems - In a dynasty league, keep 2 of Matt Adams, Everth Cabrera, Danny Salazar, Zach Wheeler. All are $1.
         Jason Collette: Cabrera & Wheeler.

Comment From Detlef Shrempf - Owings or Gregorious – who is starting down in Zona?

Jason Collette: I was having this conversation the other day with someone. What is stopping the Mets or Pirates from calling up AZ and making a deal for Gregorius? AZ clearly likes Owings and needs another C behind Montero. Gregorius would enhance that Pitt infield defense and would be a big improvement for the Mets.

Jon Heyman ‏@JonHeymanCBS - Grant Green having a very impressive camp for angels. @MikeDiGiovanna notes he's handling SS today.
Mack – could this be another possible candidate for short at Citi Field? LA already has Erick Aybar ($8.75mil/yr through2016) and Andrew Romine (MLB), Eric Stamets (2015), and Jose Rodon (2017) in system. The 25-yr. old hit .280 last year as a second baseman, but that now belongs to Howie Kendrick.

Mike DiGiovanna ‏@MikeDiGiovanna - For those asking about #Angels: Green playing SS doesn't make Aybar expendable. Just means he's getting strong consideration for UTIL spot

Terry Collins mentioned on Saturday that he had no idea when either Lucas Duda or Ike Davis would be back in the lineup. Both are suffering from leg, calf, hammy problems, which just take time to heal. The process is quite frustrating (trust me... I've pulled my hammy multiple times). You think everything is healed and then you step into the batters box and try to put the proper weight on both your legs through your swing. It's just not there. And, in this case, this is professional baseball which has very little margin of error.

Let's put it another way... remember how shitty Davis looked last year when his hammy was fine? Well, try to imagine what it would be like now if a lefty through him a curve.

You just may be seeing Matt Clark on opening day in this position.

I'd rather see Eric Campbell start at 1st than Matt Clark, now that Duda and Davis both appear to have career-ending leg injuries. Need a guy who can get on base.

Is Dom Smith ready yet? Heck, Ed Kranepool made the majors at 17! Just kidding, Mack.

Mack Ade said...

Campbell hasn't had any first base time yet this spring so I would be surprised if he starts the season there for the Mets. My guess is a rusty Duda will platoon with Satin

I think they would slot Murphy at 1B and Flores at 2B if both guys are unavailable to start the season.

Is Allan Dykstra out of a cast yet? :)

Mack Ade said...

Reese - no, he won't be ready for OD

Mack -

The UT guy has to be able to play SS. That lets Campbell out. Campbell's competition for a roster spot is Satin, and I have to believe Satin wins that one. Lutz is in the mix for that spot too. We have a logjam at 4th IF. I think the UT job is Seratelli's to lose. He looked great on that bunt yesterday. Hope he starts hitting.

Which catcher are you giving up for Gregorius? I wouldn't trade Plawecki, and Td'A is certainly off limits. If they'd take Centeno, I'd do the deal, even though I am not that high on Didi. I'm still looking for a Drew signing or a Franklin trade. (Jake, make sure you have a supply of umbrellas and golashas.)

Alderson will win the Putin/Obama standoff with Harvey. Remember, he can't pitch if TC doesn't pencil his name in on the lineup card or wave for him from the pen. Hmmm, I never thought of that until I wrote it. Could there be a possibility that Hervey gets a few relief outings in September?

Anxious to see more ink about B. Colon. In order for us to make reasonable noise he is huge factor. He must perform for his 10 million

Mack Ade said...

Herb:

Another person who isn't trading talent for talent... great... we'll never move ahead with this logic.

BTW, my 1B platoon, right now, is Satin/Murphy, with Murphy/Flores on 2B, and Quintanillla/Flores on SS - I just happen to like Campbell and I wanted to say something nice about him so his family could read it...

Harvey is one year away from arbitration... tread carefully here or he will never sign a long term deal with the Mets

Mack Ade said...

Herb - Plawecki is a pure trade chip in my books

Mack Ade said...

Sugar - Re: Colon... he needs to pitch to earn ink. We'll see after today.

Bob Sugar said...

Mack what do you like about Campbell?

Bill Metsiac said –

Hi,Mack,With all the recent talk at your site about Campbell looking good for a utility job, and Clark "possibly the OD 1Bman", I wonder why you ignore Josh Satin. He can play all IF positions but SS, he's shown he can hit ML pitching, and during the Winter he was mentioned as a platoon partner of Davis or Duda. The bench will have a Catcher, MIFer who can play SS, OFer and corner IFer. Satin should have the edge. As for SS, is there no way Sandy can deal with his protege Beane, to get Lowrie? IMO his being under contract for 1 year makes him a solid target, better than an unproven kid or an overrated Drew who wants a multi-year deal.

I'm sorry, but offensively Murphy just is not a firstbaseman.
please stop trying to put him there.
keep him at 2b.... he holds his own defensively and can be a plus offensively

Anonymous said...

@Bob

Your right he's not....but he's better offensively then Clark, Campbell, and Satin.....

Mack Ade said...

Sugan, Metsiac, Herb -

Wow... no love for my man Campbell...

Well, first.... he's a nice person.

Two, he plays + defense at every position he is asked to play.

Three, though he has never been thought of as a prospect, he won't embarrass himself with either a glove or a bat in his hands.

And fourth, as I said earlier, the Mack's Mets site was started as a 'safe zone' for the minor league players. They and their families read it sometimes daily and many of us follow each other on Facebook. I just thought it was a good time to become the President of the Eric Campbell for President fan club.

Good energy this morning. Nothing earth shattering here but I have a strong feeling the our starting SS on opening day is not here yet. Get the feeling Sandy is feeling the urgency finally and will do what it takes to get u another SS thru a deal. Anyone?

Mack Ade said...

Sugar -

The Mets can't possibly start this season with the current 'tryouts' for short.

I would rather stick a red traffic cone there and tell the visiting manange that they aren't allowed to hit there.

Or, do you want bold? Promote Luis Guillorme. He's the best defensive shortstop in the organization and can hold the fort down until a deal can be worked out for someone.

bgreg98180 said...

How can anybody tell what Alderson is feeling/thinking?
He keeps so much locked away from getting into the media when it comes to player aquisition.
and..... he has proven over and over again.... that what he says...does not match with what he does.
logically....yes it does seem to be a no-brainer when it comes to making sure a new shortstop is on this team as soon as possible.....
but... that doesn't mean Alderson acts on it

I would trade plaweki for owings in a heart beat. I have never seen either play, I am just going on numbers.
Or u would just be happy platooning tejada and seratlli, and see who comes out on top. Seratelli showed last year a high obp and speed. Slot them both in the 2 hole and move everyone down a peg and see what they can do with some protection behind tbem( Murphy).

Mack Ade said...

I will tell you ONE THING about Sandy Alderson.

If there was 0% that the Mets might sign Drew, he would say so. The last think he would want to do is keep talking to the beat reporters about something that has no chance of happening.

So...

There is still at least 1% chance...

Mack Ade said...

Zozo -

So would I, not because I want to lose Plawecki, but because you have to roll the dice sometimes and it takes talent to get talent.

Sure, d'Arnaud could go down and a Plawecki trade would be a mistake in the long run, but you still walk away with a long term shortstop (all reports lately are that Cecchini is a bust) and you draft Kennesaw State's Max Pentacost or Indiana's Kyle Schwarber.

bgreg98180 said...

Mack

remind me....who did we pass on in order to draft Cecchini??

Mack Ade said...

the next pick was CF Courtney Hawkins (Mets had 2 private workouts with him and Hawkins thought he was going to be picked by the Mets)

3 picks later... SP Lucas Giolito (now #1 Nats prospect)

3 more picks later... Michael Wacha

bgreg98180 said...

ouch....

Reese Kaplan said...

I'd do Plawecki for Owings. If d'Arnaud goes down, you have Centeno and Recker available to hold down the fort at substitute player level. Hell, Centeno would probably already outproduce Josh Thole and we kept trotting him out there.
