LAST GAME: The Binghamton Mets opened their six-game series against the Portland Sea Dogs with a doubleheader split on Monday night at Hadlock Field.Hansel Robles tossed six shutout innings and Matt Clark launched a three-run homer to lead the B-Mets to a 5-0 win in the opener. The teams had to wait through a 99-minute rain delay in the top of the seventh before Binghamton could put a bow on their sixth straight win. In the nightcap, Portland roughed upAngel Cuan to the tune of eight runs on a dozen hits in an 8-2 defeat. Michael Brenly delivered the big blow, a game-sealing grand slam in the third inning.Travis Taijeron and Jayce Boyd each supplied RBI singles. Mike McCarthy went six innings to pick up the win.
BINGHAMTON STARTER: LHP Darin Gorski makes his team-leading eighth start of the season and second against the Sea Dogs. Gorski settled for a no-decision in his last start against the Altoona Curve on Thursday, May 15. The lefty allowed one run on four hits while fanning six over six innings and left with the lead. The B-Mets lost the advantage, but eventually won on a Cory Vaughn walk-off homer. Gorski defeated the Sea Dogs on May 3 at home, allowing two runs over six innings. The southpaw was selected in the 7th round of the 2009 draft by the Mets out of Kutztown University of Pennsylvania.
PORTLAND STARTER,: LHP Brian Johnson makes fourth start as a Sea Dog and second against the B-Mets. He took a no-decision in his last game against the New Britain Rock Cats on Thursday, May 15, allowing three runs over five innings while walking five. He opened the season with the Salem Red Sox (High-A), going 3-1 with a 3.86 ERA in five starts. He won his Double-A debut, beating the B-Mets on May 3. Johnson was selected as the 31st overall pick in the 2012 draft out of Florida. He is in his third season in the Red Sox organization.
PLAWECKI ENJOYING THE ROAD: In four games on the road trip B-Mets catcher Kevin Plawecki has gone 10-for-18 at the plate with four multiple-hit games. He’s collected 8 RBI and raised his batting average by 41 percentage points. Plawecki is hitting .421 in the month of May with 14 RBI. His .336 batting average is tied for eighth-highest in the Eastern League.
JOHNSON’S STREAK ENDS: B-Mets outfielder Kyle Johnson watched his season-high ten-game hitting streak come to an end with an 0-for-4 game in the opener on Monday night. Johnson hit .400 (14-for-35) during the stretch and raised his batting average by 60 percentage points. It was the fourth time a B-Met had hit safely in ten straight games or more this season.
A BREAK FOR THE PEN: After six relievers combined to throw 8.1 innings in Binghamton’s 14-inning affair on Sunday, the bullpen was asked to toss just three innings in the doubleheader on Monday night. Cody Satterwhite closed out the opener with a scoreless inning and Hamilton Bennett made his season debut with two blank frames in the nightcap.
WELCOME TO DOUBLE-A: B-Mets catcher Nelfi Zapata made his Double-A debut in the nightcap on Monday. The Massachusetts native, who was added to the roster on Friday following Xorge Carrillo’s promotion to Las Vegas went 0-for-3 at the plate.
BLASTING OFF: Matt Clark’s home run in the opener on Monday, his eighth of the season, pushed him into a tie for third in the league in round-trippers. Six of his home runs have come on the road this season. It was just his third homer off a righty.
