Tom Brennan - ARIZONA EARLY REPORT CARDS

Tom Brennan - ARIZONA EARLY REPORT CARDS
How are our Arizona prospects doing?
Largely pretty good in the early going.
HOMERS:

Through Thursday, only a handful of guys in the AFL had 2 or more HRs.
Of them, only one had 4 – Peter Alonso.
Only two others had 3 – one being our own Desmond Lindsay, and in only 21 PAs.  Encouraging.

RBIs:
Peter Alonso is # 2 - 13 RBIs in 13 games.  Continuing his RBI machine ways.
And in limited play, Andres Gimenez has 5 RBIs, and 6 runs, too.

SLUG %:
Peter Alonso is # 1 in guys over 40 ABs with a .640 %.  BOOM!

AVG:
Alonso is at .320; Lindsay in 20 BAs is at .350.  Gimenez is at .150 (3 for 20), but his 6 walks in limited play time give him a solid OBP of .346.
Ali Sanchez?  Just 1 for 12, but also 2 walks.
  • Hit more, play more, I always say.

PITCHING:
Steve Nogosek – 4.2 IP, 1 hit, 2 walks 4 Ks, 0.00 – nice to see.
Matt Blackham – decent so far, but 6 walks in 4.1 IP. Oh, dem bases on balls.
Gerson Bautista – 5 outings, 3.86 ERA, 7 Ks, just 3 walks.  GERSON THE PERSON!
Joe Zanghi – walkless 5.1 innings, but 9 hits and 5 runs.  Control TOO good?

My overall take?   So far, so good for the Mets’ cadre of Arizonians.

Wagenen the GM

Interesting and either a courageous or foolish hire rather than Bloom.

We'll see if we got a good GM or a bad one soon enough

I did see an article that Alonso's double the other day had the fastest exit velocity of any Met hit ever (116.3 MPH), and his Futures Game homer was the first ball ever to have a combined speed (over 113 MPH) and arc (over 40 degrees) in baseball history...all to say that he has SOME prodigious power.

Am Agent as a gm?
Does this mean an outlook more open to paying market value for top talent?

Leave it to the Mets to make the most stupid choice and pick the worse, from all the candidates. An agent for GM that has no experience in scouting, development, trading, analytics...nothing except for contracts.

These Mets have yet again shown everyone why they are a failing franchise with no hope of winning anytime soon. They are their worse enemies by the choices they make.

Vipers comment makes the sceptic in me wonder.

Is it possible that the Wilpons are deluded to believe that Minaya will cover the scouting, Riccardi will cover the Operations, Ricco will cover Trading, and Wagenen will cover contracts??

Now that would be other world craziness.

But at the same time, would anybody think it an impossible Met decision?

That would mean that instead of three GM's you have four. The point was supposed to be that one GM would make the decisions and move the Mets in a given direction. Whatever that direction is.

In Bloom you at least had someone who had done just about everything and therefore could relate to all the other facets when approached by any of the other 3 GM's.

The way it stands, is business as usual except that now another layer was added by getting someone who can do contracts. The same three GM's who the Wilpons didn't think enough to give them even an interview for the position are still in charge of their respective departments.

I fail to see the great improvements that have been made by hiring this guy. Can't wait for him to approach deGrom with a contract extension and for deGrom to say, oh talk to Boras who I just hired.

It looks as though we replaced Alderson and kept the status quo.... personally was pulling for Bloom ...
I am a MET fan good or bad...will have to wait and see

I only care about two things this winter:
1. How Alonso’s defense looks?
2. Can Desmond Lindsey play?

I will learn nothing from anything else that happens in Arizona. I expected Alonso to rake, I don’t care in Gimenez hits there because I know wht he can do. I don’t expect Sanchez to hit much and am considering dropping my expectations. And I know what all those pitchers will bring to the table.

Texas GuS, Alonso's defense is now by some considered to be close to adequate...and still improving. Lindsay spoken well of by Alonso, but Des needs more ABs.

What about these ideas. Trade Frazier, Bruce, Gimenez, and Lugo for Giancarlo Stanton and Gary Sanchez?

The Yankees know Todd Frazier. Jay Bruce could have a rebound to his old form year, Seth Lugo could become a premiere reliever, and Andres Gimenez could eventually play shortstop or second base for the Yankees after Didi Gregorius leaves.

Why maybe not too silly an idea is because Yankee fans seem very disappointed with Giancarlo lately I have noticed, and Yankee fans are not thrilled with catcher Gary Sanchez (despite being only 25 years old and making almost nothing.)

I still think that JT Realmuto could be gotten here. But it could be a very competitive luring. Every team will want him.

But look at a potential batting lineup if the Mets were to become so fortunate.

1B Alonso 2B McNeil SS Rosario 3B Frazier LF Cespedes CF Nimmo RF Conforto C Sanchez

Not too shabby looking.

I think the NY Mets needing to go in another direction is why they chose Brodie Van Halen.

The NY Mets fans that I spoke to, all seemed to want someone a lot younger than the norm.

My take?

I can easily see the Wilpon's logic, but filling any position with an inexperienced person always makes fans uptight until that person aptly proves themselves capable. I think Brodie will prove himself capable.

But then again here too, the Wilpons and Brodie did have plenty of knowledge of one another through business dealings, the reports are all saying online. That is probably what pushed Brodie over the finish line.

But understand this too.

When any person goes and applies for something that they have not yet ever done before (like when we get out of college even) there is always apprehension abound. It is the norm in any hiring circle or organization. The skeptics make some noise until that person proves their worth and it's like this in any field or occupation.

We all have to start out somewhere I guess.

It's embracing that new opportunity, and not letting it pass through the fingers that is important.

Theo Epstein had to start somewhere too. Right?

Time and patience.
