Is it almost Bauer Time for the NY Mets. 3 years in the low $90 million range is still a whole lot, but compared to earlier numbers thrown around, it almost feels like a bargain. But will LAD swoop in and create a complete juggernaut?
Juggernaut David Rodriguez goes 3 for 5? This guy more and more seems like a serious hitter.
Joel Sherman writes an article that says the only contract he'd offer Bauer is 1 year, $40 million, due to his "issues". But wouldn't that trigger the lux tax? And the sharply inclining lux tax in future years, as I believe the Mets are very likely to exceed the cap in 2022 if it is not significantly increased. Is it possible that 1 year, $40 million is more expensive than 3 years, $93 million, especially when you need to fill that starter spot in 2022 and 2023 and pay a whole lot more lux tax?
I like Ernest's prospect "Up" list. Tony Dibrell will be interesting to see if he can get over the hump after his shaky 2019. And Sherveyn and Jaylen need "contact" lenses. Can they solve the K rate problem?

The thing about D-Rod is that he usually also walks at least once or twice each game. He had about a .450 On Base Percentage in the regular season and over .400 again in the Caribbean Series.
The ironic thing is that he, a Venezuelan native, is playing for Panama and his team advanced to the semifinals while Venezuela, who didn't add him to their team for the series, is now out.
Also, interesting that Lagares and Fargas were both benched yesterday to try to get them going for the last two games.
I also agree on your take on the SHerman/Bauer article.
I agree with what Reese said a few days ago. Sign more players instead of just one with the remaining money.
With the CBA expiring, who really knows what the luxury tax threshold for 2022 and beyond will be. Could remain $210 million, could go to $240 million, $300 million, be eliminated entirely....

Bob W is 100% accurate abou the luxury tax. Nobody knows where it is going.
That said, if anybody has a clue, it ought to be an owner and a GM with long experience.
I'm not going to worry about the tax hit just yet -- and maybe it's just the price of doing business. As I've commented before, if "Moneyball" is about finding a market inefficiency, of zigging when everyone else zags, then it stands to reason that ignoring the artificial "soft cap" of the tax rate give your team a powerful competitive advantage over everyone else. You just have to be bold enough to say "screw it," and, yes, suffer the ire of your fellow owners. It's definitely not sporting!
On Bauer:
Though not the plan I would have pursued, if Mets sign Bauer I won't be made, sad, or angry. It's kind of exciting and definitely interesting. So right now, flush from the hunt, I find myself hoping the deal gets done.

Jimmy, I agree. Bauer under the cap would be amazing. If they go over, it is a cost of doing business.
I think the Yankees have paid about $400 million in luxury taxes all time, and the Dodgers and Red Sox have paid a lot too. The Mets? Never 1 dollar of tax.
If we need to go over the tax to have a legit WS contender, do it.
If the Dodgers get Bauer, it won't be a huge concern for the Mets, most likely, because the Mets will probably fall short of meeting them in the playoffs on the way to another LAD World Series crown.
I don't know if the Brooklyn Nets will win the championship with Harden, Durant, and Irving (they might), but I will tell you one thing - it is really something watching those 3 superstars offensively overpowering the opposing teams. I want that for the Mets. I don't want to compete. I want 1986 again.
Yeah, this is probably the year to go over that tax with the current CBA expiring.
But on the other hand, it is hard to believe that there won't be some sort of governor on teams, be it a salary cap, luxury tax or some other type of sharing scheme, although MLB and the MLBPA can't seem to agree on anything these days.
I don't think anybody wants to go back to the days of the one team dynasties. (Even this Mets fan at this point)
Good morning folks. Two things about Bauer catch my attention:
1. The Mets were on him from the get-go and never backed off. They made their offer in December and have stayed with it. And, it was never to be more than DeGrom. Good for them.
2. Bauer wants the Dodgers badly, and it seems the Dodgers know it. Basically giving the Mets’ offer is like laying at their feet, all they have to do is match it. I think they will.
Love the Ernest Dove info. About time we heard something positive about Newton.
