For most of the mock season, Marcelo Mayer was the first SS projected in this draft, but Lawler is who I consider the top all-around prep hitter in this draft.
He also is a + defender that is projected to stick at short.
Definitely a future star.

Areas To Improve: Handle velocity at the plate, become a more nuanced defender
We’re in the nitpicking range, but none of the players in the 2021 draft are perfect. Lawlar has a case as the best pure hitter in the prep class along with Marcelo Mayer, but some scouts want to see him do more damage against upper-end velocity at the plate even after he was one of the best performers with the bat last summer. Additionally, Lawlar is a strong defender but the most critical evaluators will talk about how he gets away with things because of his athleticism, so improving his internal clock, footwork, angles and other granular defensive details could make him an even more well-rounded player.

Arizona finds itself picking in the Top 10 for the first time since 2017, and finds a top 3 talent sitting on their board. Jordan Lawlar has been the consensus top prep player at Prospects Live for a few months now. There's a chance here for 60 hit, 60 glove with the potential ceiling of above average grades spread out across the board elsewhere. Lawlar brings an advanced approach to the plate that is rarely seen in a player his age. He's shown a fantastic ability to adjust mid-at-bat, as well as from at-bat to at-bat. It's simply a polished, high-floor middle infielder with some ceiling. The Diamondbacks could use an infusion of talent in the middle infield in their system, so Lawlar falling into their laps is quite the gift.

The top-ranked Texan in the 2021 class, Lawlar is looking to follow in the footsteps of Bobby Witt Jr. as a five-tool prep shortstop out of the Lone Star State. Some scouts have compared Lawlar to the Royals’s 2019 first-round pick, though his tools aren’t quite as loud despite a chance for above-average grades across the board. Lawlar showed one of the best hit tools at the Perfect Game All-American Classic, has a chance for above-average future power and is also an easy plus runner who has clocked a 6.45 60-yard dash—a 70-grade time. Defensively, Lawlar has a chance to stick at shortstop at the next level. Evaluators like his actions and think he has 55-grade arm strength, though at times he struggles to get in sync with ground balls leading some to question his internal clock. Skeptics believe he’s an athlete-first defender now who will need to refine the details of his defensive game to stick there long term, but considering his hit, power and run tools—there’s plenty to like from the 6-foot-2, 185-pound Vanderbilt commit who likely won’t make it to campus.

Jordan Lawlar is a physical specimen and one heck of a baseball talent. To take a prep shortstop top three is a massive endorsement of the upside of that particular player. Teams don’t take a selection like that lightly, hence the consistently good recent outcomes for prep shortstops at the top of the board. These guys can play. Lawlar is no different.
Really the biggest downside to picking Lawlar is getting the timing lined up with the top pitching prospects and the top hitters. As we start to see the fruits of this rebuild, like Casey Mize, Matt Manning, and company, the hitters need to be ready too. If the Tigers believe Lawlar fits into that picture, then it’s a genuinely great pick on the surface.
With so much time until the draft, everything is liable to change. For now, I like the Lawlar selection. I think Matt McClain, Adrian Del Castillo, and Jud Fabian are just a few other potential options right now for Detroit to take with their first pick, and presumably someone will boost their stock substantially this spring to enter that mix. But it’s quite possible that none of them bring as much upside to the table as Lawlar.

Lawlar excelled on the showcase circuit last summer to position himself as the top prep player in the 2021 MLB draft class entering the spring. The prep star from Texas has five-tool potential and will stick at shortstop in pro ball.

Texas Rangers
The Rangers get the best prep shortstop right out of their own backyard with this pick. Jordan Lawlar is toolsy across the board with a tremendous hit tool, a cannon for an arm, and pro grade speed. His power is above average with potential to get better, and his glove will allow him to stay at the shortstop position. Lawlar has the chance to grade out better than Bobby Witt Jr, who was the 2019 top prep shortstop, and is leagues ahead of 2020 top prep shortstop Ed Howard.

1. Pittsburgh Pirates: Jordan Lawlar, SS, Jesuit Prep HS (TX)
The Pirates have a comp round selection as well and choose to save a bit of cash and go with the best prep player in the draft class. Lawlar is a shortstop with multiple 60 tools that will stay at the position. Plus bat speed and developing strength should lead to at least average power. Ben Cherington could go with a college pitcher as well with three SEC talents expected to go in the top 10 next July.

The Rangers have taken reliable college bats with their last two first-rounders, but a five-tool shortstop in their own backyard will be hard to ignore. While his tools aren't quite as loud as those of fellow Dallas-area native Bobby Witt Jr., who went No. 2 overall two years ago, Lawlar is a more advanced hitter at the same stage.

First, we took the top-rated prep middle infield prospect in the prep class in Jordan Lawlar. He has all the tools to stay at shortstop with premium defensive ability and an offensive upside that projects to have high level hit and future power grades. The second round we stayed on the high school side with Josh Hartle who combines an unbelievably projectable frame and good polish for a high school southpaw. The ceilings on both prospects were too high to pass up at either point in the draft. -Jered Goodwin
Sakowski's Take: The Royals are certainly unafraid of taking high-end prep talent, and a draft like this with Lawlar and Hartle definitely represents that. Lawlar has established himself as one of the best prep prospects in the nation and pairing him in the KC system with Bobby Witt Jr. would be extremely fun, and Josh Hartle is the top lefty in the prep class to some, with excellent projection and long-term upside. Taking two prep players back to back with your first two picks is always a risky endeavor, but this particular hypothetical would represent one of the better upside drafts to be sure.

The game comes easy to Lawlar. With the Hit, Defense, and Speed all grading as Plus (60) to go with impressive barrel control and zone awareness, you have a special talent. Line to Line approach with good bat speed able to catch the high Fastball. The Power (50) has spiked this summer, and should settle in around 20+ HR a year. Natural athletic actions, consistent game performances, and checks virtually every box you look for in a Prep player at the top of the draft. The only question is the Age as a High School Senior (18.10).
Lawlar looks comfortable against any level of competition. Whether it be in the box, defensively at a premium position (SS), or on the basepaths, the game comes so easy and naturally to Lawlar. As he shows the rare ability to slow the game down at a young age. Your prototypical 2 hole hitter, doing everything so well while having Plus-Plus bat control and a run producer. A true impact player on both sides of the ball

Jordan Lawler and Kumar Rocker make you wish you had the worst record in baseball last year and could draft one of them. Both look terrific.
