Scouting Report - RHP - Cooper Stinson

 Cooper Stinson

RHP      6-6     245     Duke

1-28-21 - ba -

Player to know: Cooper Stinson, RHP.

Stinson didn’t get quite as much attention as Jarvis last season, in part because Jarvis threw a perfect game and Stinson didn’t. But otherwise, Stinson’s numbers were nearly as good, and in some cases, were even better than his teammate’s. In 21.2 innings over four starts, he had a 0.42 ERA and 24 strikeouts compared to just four walks. The low walk total was a particularly welcome development after he issued 43 free passes in 54.1 innings as a freshman. Stinson has the frame and the stuff, including a low-90s fastball and a slider that projects to be a plus offering, to handle Fridays in the ACC, and with another step forward, Duke should have one of the best Friday starters in the conference once again.

Cooper Stinson

Duke RHP

Ht: 6-6 | Wt: 245 | B-T: R-R

Commit/Drafted: Never Drafted

Age At Draft: 21.9

The younger brother of Rays 2019 fourth-rounder Graeme Stinson, Cooper is a massive, 6-foot-6, 260-pound righthander who was a solid pitching prospect in his own right out of high school (ranking No. 229 on the 2018 BA 500) and has taken steps forward in two years at Duke. Stinson handled 54.1 innings as a freshman and racked up plenty of strikeouts (12.9 per nine) but also struggled significantly with his control, with 43 walks and a 7.1 per nine rate. Through four starts in 2020, Stinson seemed to have taken a step forward in the control department, and he posted a 0.42 ERA over 21.2 innings while striking out 24 and walking just four. Stinson’s fastball has been in the 87-93 mph range, but his slider has a chance to be a plus pitch with hard bite and impressive spin rates. Stinson will need to convince scouts that he is a starter because their biggest concern remains his control issues and he will also turn 22 a month after the draft.

Mack's spin -

Stinson is a solid starter who looms over his opponents.

I see him in the 3rd-4th round range.
