Mack's Mock Pick - #65 - RHP - Max Debiec

Max Debiec

Mack's spin -

Prep arm... 6-7... high 90s fastball... all sorts of changeups... what's not to like here.

This kid could go anywhere from the first to third round.

49. Max Debiec, RHP, O'Dea HS (WA)

Debiec is an athletic 6-foot-7 right-hander whose fastball has touched into the upper-90s with spin. Both secondaries, a breaking ball and a changeup, have flashed plus as well, giving teams some hope that he can one day stick in a rotation. There is risk with Debiec's delivery, and he'll be a slow-burn candidate for whichever team tries to persuade him away from his commitment to the University of Washington.

1-27-21 - Joe @JoeDoyleMiLB

6-foot-7 RHP Max Debiec (Seattle, WA) has one of the more projectable bodies in the 2021 Draft. Armed w/a fastball that's touched 97 and an assortment of breaking balls and a developing changeup, Debiec figures to be a hot name in the Top 100 picks.

Max Debiec O'Dea HS, Seattle RHP

Ht: 6-7 | Wt: 200 | B-T: R-R

Commit/Drafted: Washington

Age At Draft: 18.4

One of the top prospects out of the Northwest, Debiec is an ultra-projectable, 6-foot-7, 200-pound righthander with potential for a high-octane fastball. Debiec has typically sat in the 91-94 mph range in outings throughout the summer, but he has been up into the 96-98 mph range at his best with high spin rates on top of the velocity. His fastball velocity has ticked down into the upper 80s in longer outings and Debiec also throws with plenty of effort. Because of that, many have reliever questions with him currently, and despite his size some scouts have wondered how much deception he has given the lack of whiffs he’s generated with otherwise loud stuff. Debiec has shown some feel for secondaries with a slurvy breaking ball that blends in shape and velocity between a slider and a curveball and he’s also thrown a low-80s changeup. The Washington commit has plenty of upside given his natural arm talent and his physical upside, but there is still some refinement to be had here.

1-7-21 - CUBBIES CRIB -

Max Debiec, RHP, O’Dea

The final kid on this list fits the overall theme of pitching. Already standing 6-foot-7, 200 pounds, Max Debiec is an intriguing prospect. He has seen his draft stock improve in recent months with various strong performances at tournaments.

While scouts could see Debiec’s direction either as a starter or as a reliever go, either way, it seems most likely he will fit an organization as a reliever. The righty carries a smooth delivery and easy arm action through the zone to the plate and has a four-pitch mix of a fastball, curveball, slider, and changeup.

Debiec’s fastball appears to be the best of his repertoire. It packs a serious punch, and as an 18-year-old, it is already an impressive pitch. It tops out at 97 mph with a range between 92-94 mph. Since last year he has added some speed to his fastball. His secondary pitches need some work; however, they will most likely develop with time and age.

Debiec gives off the vibes of a young Tyler Glasnow, which would be a great ceiling to reach for if he so chooses to forego his verbal commitment to the University of Washington. While Debiec does not align with some of the other top talents, he does provide maybe the best opening of the other two prospects listed.

12. Seattle Mariners | Marcelo Mayer, SS, Eastlake HS | (2/41) Max Debiec, RHP, O’Dea HS

Mayer was on a short list at the top of our board as we viewed him as a top ten pick. With him still available at 12 it was a no brainer as he brings a shortstop profile with a middle of the order type bat. Debiec is a guy we have gotten plenty of looks at being from right here in Seattle. He brings a projectable 6-foot-7 frame with a mid-90s fastball and a feel for two distinct breaking balls as well as a changeup with some deception from his quick arm. -Colt Olinger

Cervino’s Take: Marcelo Mayer is potentially the top prep prospect in the class and grabbing him along with hometown prep arm Max Debiec. Mayer is a classic Southern California shortstop and fits that profile of athleticism, shortstop projection, and a polished hit tool. Debiec is a massive right-hander that offers substantial projection and should develop nicely given the time in a Mariner’s system that has turned out solid pitching in the past.

Max Debiec, RHP, O'Dea HS, Seattle

Travel Team: Canes National

Commit: Washington

Performance: 3.0 IP, 1 H, 3 ER, 2 K, 2 BB, 54 pitches (53% strikes)

Debiec has plenty of size that scouts like to see from a pitcher, with a 6-foot-7 202-pound frame that's described as "ultra projectable." With a fast arm to go on top of it and exciting pure stuff, Debiec has a lot of ingredients for scouts to get excited about.

Debiec has run his fastball up to 97 mph at its best in shorter outings this summer, but he peaked at 94 at the UBC, with his velocity ticking down into the upper 80s and low 90s as the innings progressed. He has potential with a breaking ball as well.

What scouts will look for moving forward with Debiec is more deception or the ability to miss bats more consistently. Evaluators noted that hitters managed good swings against him consistently in this event despite his stuff and he'll need to miss more bats to jump into the elite tier of arms. With his frame and the amount of weight he still should be able to pack onto it, Debiec's upside is significant.

PG-

Max Debiec is a 2021 RHP/1B with a 6-7 202 lb. frame from Seattle, WA who attends O'Dea. Very long and tall athletic build, tremendous length and physical projection. Very extended 3/4's arm slot, deep arm action in back, big leverage to the plate when everything comes together in his delivery. Fastball topped out at 97 mph early, worked mostly 92-94 mph, gets outstanding sinking action at times. Threw both a curveball and slider, slider was tight and big at times with swing and miss potential, lands the curveball well for strikes. Sells his change up well and gets nice action when he's behind it. 7.12 runner, shows real hitting potential for his size and length, swing is notably short and direct from the right side, stays quiet and timed, gets some separation and the ball comes off the barrel hard, has big power potential and crushed some balls to left centerfield. Very interesting athlete who also excels on the basketball court. High ceiling on the mound
