Good Morning. Happy Birthday to Jeromy Burnitz, Adeiny Hechavarria, and Daniel Zamora and Happy Jackie Robinson Day! Mets 5 Phillies 1 as David Peterson shines, the Offense awakens and the Bullpen shuts the door.

Post: Brandon Nimmo thriving as Mets’ leadoff man. “Nimmo has registered an
NL-best .464 batting average (13-for-28) with a .571 slugging percentage,
despite still looking for his first home run.”
Newsday:
In the first inning, after Nimmo slapped an opposite-field single, Lindor
followed with a base hit and Smith lined an RBI single for the quick 1-0 lead.
Pete Alonso made it 2-0 by hitting into a double play, and with David Peterson
cruising, that seemed like it would be enough.
NY
Post: Last week in Philadelphia, David Peterson got rocked. In the rematch
Wednesday night, Peterson rocked. The Mets left-hander matched a career-high
with 10 strikeouts and gave up just two hits over six innings while mowing down
the Phillies in a 5-1 win at Citi Field.
NY
Post: Aaron Loup comes through for Mets after layoff. “Loup induced a key
double play in the seventh inning — and got five outs in all — to ensure a
brilliant outing by starter David Peterson didn’t get wasted in the Mets’ 5-1
win over the Phillies at Citi Field.”
Metstradamus:
James McCann had himself a night with three hits, and in the 8th inning he put
the cherry on top of the sundae with a two run HR, his first ding-dong as a
Met. Edwin Diaz knifed through the order in the ninth, and also found a way to
get Met fans excited about his arrival into a game with an entrance song that
makes me want to go save the Princess from the clutches of Donkey Kong.

1968 |
The Astros defeat the Mets in 24 innings, 1-0, making it
the longest scoreless game in major league history. The six-hour and
six-minute contest, in which each team had 79 at-bats and 11 hits, ends when Bob
Aspromonte's grounder goes through the legs of shortstop Al Weis,
scoring Norm
Miller from third base with one out. |
2004 |
Major league baseball begins the tradition of Jackie
Robinson Day, an annual celebration commemorating the day in 1947
when the Dodger infielder broke the color line. At big league venues across
the country, ceremonies are being held to honor the ground-breaking
historical event, including baseball commissioner Bud Selig and Jackie's
widow Rachel Robinson attending the festivities at Shea Stadium. |
1947 - 28-year-old Jackie
Robinson makes a historic debut for the Brooklyn Dodgers, becoming
the first African-American to play major league baseball in the 20th century.
Robinson goes 0 for 3 in his debut, but scores the deciding run in a 5 - 3
victory over the Boston Braves at Ebbets Field. He handles 11 chances at first
base, a new position for him. Coach Clyde Sukeforth, interim manager and the
man credited with first scouting Robinson, guides the Dodgers to two victories
before stepping down. Robinson is the first black player to appear in the
majors since 1884.
1958 - Major League Baseball comes to California as
the transplanted Giants and Dodgers play the first game on the Pacific Coast.
The Californian contest at San Francisco's Seals Stadium sees Ruben Gómez
blanking Los Angeles and Don
Drysdale. Daryl
Spencer hits the first home run and Orlando
Cepeda also homers in the Giants' 8 - 0 victory in front of 23,448
fans.
1997 - The 50th anniversary of Jackie
Robinson's breaking the color barrier in major league baseball is
celebrated before 54,047 at Shea Stadium during a game between the Mets and the
Dodgers. U.S. President Bill Clinton and Jackie's widow, Rachel Robinson, both
speak during the 35-minute presentation, but the surprise of the evening occurs
when acting Commissioner Bud Selig announces that Robinson's number 42 will be
retired in perpetuity for every team. On the field, the Mets beat the Dodgers,
5 - 0.
1998 - The first-ever American League-National
League doubleheader ends up a good day for New York. The Yankees are forced to
come to Shea Stadium after a beam fell into the stands at Yankee Stadium on
April 13th. They earn their first victory in Queens in 22 years as they defeat
the Angels, 6 - 3. Former Mets star Darryl
Strawberry, the all-time home run leader at Shea, adds to his total
with a shot into the left field bleachers. In the regularly-scheduled night
game, the Mets beat the Cubs, 2 - 1. The Yankees, who played at Shea in 1974
and 1975 while Yankee Stadium was renovated, draw a crowd of 40,743, a dramatic
contrast to the gathering of 16,012 who show up for the Mets game at night.

Great win last night, so many contributions. Loup was impressive. And the way Peterson showed up after his first poor outing -- it made a statement. He wants to keep this job.
Jimmy
Peterson was fabulous - THAT was major league stuff. Keep it up.
Some bats are starting to sizzle - a good sign.
Rodon no hitter - White Sox and Dodgers have a combined 43 no hitters. Mets stuck at 1.
Yermin Mercedes hitting .500 and another tape measure HR. I want a Mercedes.
Mets all alone in first place, Braves 3 games back. May the Mets keep them in the rear view mirror all season.
Someone on the Mets ought to get to the bottom of the Jed Lowrie matter and tell us.
Bernie Madoff has died. The man who probably did more to shape Mets baseball in the last decade...and not in a good way.
I didn't see the game last night but was listening on the radio . sounded like Conforto had a couple loud outs last night - one to left and a long drive to center .. might he be coming alive? Anybody see the game that might think he had better at bats?
Conforto seemed to put his best elbow forward again ladt night.
Things you will do to keep your on base % up during a slump.
NY Mets are in very good shape and early on too. Which is outstanding.
Great win yesterday, everybody came to play. To me, this is the team's finest strength. It's a team first, and it shows every single game they play.
I guess the NY Mets are finally beginning to understand Brandon Nimmo and his quiet tenaciousness and outstanding ability. He may be the number five centerfielder right now, but that won't last for very long because Brandon is literally still developing his skill set as he goes, and sky is really his only limit. True.
Although Steven Matz has started out very well on Toronto (2-0), I would take David Peterson over him any day of the week. Both lefty starters have serious capability and smooth mechanics. But to my eyes, David throws harder and can put it past batters more easily than Steven could. David had really on-target control yesterday as well. Outstanding. He blew even veteran batters away like they were sleepwalking at the plate.
But it's more than just all that really. It's David's mound presence and approach to the batters that really impresses me. His focus, fire, confidence, and his mental attitude that really impresses me more than what Steven had. I am so exceedingly glad that David Peterson is on our NY Mets lefty starter now.
Even with a few NY Mets players out hurt, albeit good ones too, this team has (right now) what it takes to go very deeply into the NL playoff rounds. It's deep, it's mostly homegrown, and they all seem to get along well together, which is so much more fun for us fans to see. I think we will all love this 2021 NY Mets season. Sky's the limit.
