Binghamton - Ponies Drop Nail Biter to Sea Dogs in Extras

BINGHAMTON, NY – The Binghamton Rumble Ponies fell to the Portland Sea Dogs 5-4 in 10 innings on Wednesday night at Mirabito Stadium. Binghamton had a 4-3 lead in the ninth, but Portland’s Ryan Fitzgerald homered to tie the game before Tate Matheny hit the go-ahead RBI double in the tenth. Matheny finished 3-4 with 3 RBI as he also had a two-run homer as part of a Portland three-run third.

The Rumble Ponies (11-26) got off to a fast start with two runs in the first via a wild pitch and an infield single by Luis Carpio. After Portland took a 3-2 lead in the third against Ponies starter Adam Oller, Mark Vientos responded with a two-run homer in the bottom of the inning, his sixth of the year tying him with Carlos Cortes for the team lead to give the Ponies a 4-3 advantage.

Carpio finished 3-4 with an RBI continuing his torrid stretch hitting safely in 13 of his last 16 games. He nearly had another RBI when he hit a two-out single in the fifth, but Vientos was thrown out at home trying to score.

Yeizo Campos (0-3) suffers the loss and blown save after giving up the game-tying homer in the 9th and go-ahead double in the tenth. Durbin Feltman (3-0) gets the win in relief for Portland (22-16).

The Rumble Ponies continue their series with the Sea Dogs on Thursday night with first pitch at 6:35 PM and pregame coverage getting underway at 6:20 on MiLB.com.

POSTGAME NOTES: Quinn Brodey had his second consecutive multi-hit game and is on a four-game hitting streak…Binghamton reliever Daniel Goggin allowed just one hit over four and a third scoreless innings… Ponies have dropped four in a row.

Carpio is suddenly racking up hits in bunches.

Boy, AA and AAA pitching for the Mets has faltered time and again in 2021.
