He is easily one the top prep outfielders in this draft.

One of the toolsiest players in the entire class, albeit with some concerns about swing-and-miss, Montgomery is coming up in conversations as high as the back end of the top 10, but it really heats up in the middle of the round.

Baseball America has the Brewers taking a prep outfielder in their most recent update. Benny Montgomery also has a power/speed combination with questions about whether he’ll hit enough to make use of his power and speed.

 

As a high school hitter with concerns about his hit tool, Montgomery will likely take some time to develop. With the Brewers likely hoping for their farm system to produce some big league help quickly, Montgomery won’t be the best choice if that’s their desire. If the bat comes together, Montgomery could be a 5-tool player, however.

Montgomery has elite speed, a strong arm from the outfield, and raw power at the plate. He needs to refine his offensive skills and clean up his swing to get to his power consistently. Montgomery has a high ceiling but comes with some risk.

Buzz: The term “five-tool player” gets used often when describing players, but it is absolutely the case with Benny Montgomery. The Red Land star outfielder won the Perfect Game All-American Home Run Derby with his power and has flashed some of the fastest 60-yard times of any player in the country. That speed helps make him an elite defender, as does his powerful arm from center field. Add in the discerning eye at the plate and quick-twitch bat, and he’ll be making consistent contact and should be among the league leaders in batting average. Montgomery, a UVA commit, is viewed by many as a future first-round pick in the 2021 MLB Draft and will be absolute must-watch baseball any time he’s up at the plate.

Few prospects in this year's draft class can match Montgomery's power/speed combination. He has shown some of the best raw power in the class, and he's one of the fastest runners as well. He has the tools to be a standout in center field, but right now his swing is not consistent.

Put on an absolute show at National Underclass Main Event establishing himself as one of the top prospects in the class. 6.42 60, 97 from OF, 103 mph exit velo, 84.80 Max Barrel Speed and absolutely mashed in games including a no doubt HR. The loudest overall set of tools at the PG National. Very few have the type of power/speed combo he possesses.

Montgomery is another prep outfielder with well-rounded potential who could propel himself up the board with a strong spring. His charms include a strong arm, above-average speed, and a fast-moving barrel. Montgomery's swing currently features a hitch and a B.J. Upton-like toe tap, both of which should get ironed out between draft day and his arrival in the majors. The raw ingredients are all here, so it's just a matter of him landing in the right system and making adjustments.
