Mack's Mock Pick - #29 - RHP - Gavin Williams

Gavin Williams

Williams has been one of the darlings of the mock draft season this year propelling himself into a guaranteed second round pick.

I snuck him in here as my last pick in the first round.

How do you not recognize him for his stellar 14-game, 11-start, 10-0, 1.82, 74-IP, 117-K, only 19 walk season for East Carolina?

(this concludes my first round picks... 12 RHP, 2-LHP, 3-C, 0-1B, 0-2B, 5-SS, 1-3B, 6-OF)

Needs to prove he can start consistently and hold his stuff as most of his work has came out of the pen for East Carolina. Having touched 99 and up to 101 out of the pen, is something evaluators everywhere including myself will be on the lookout for when he gets a chance to start if he is able to hold some of that velo, for now its all projection. Working in a Curveball and a Changeup that each show Above-average with some ability to miss bats. Without proving he can start in 2021, his helium potential will be tough to take off, if he does, this could be a Round 2 arm. Floor of a late inning reliever, with Closer stuff.

One of the hardest-throwing pitchers in the 2020 draft class (he ranked No. 81), Williams looks the part of a big league pitcher with a massive, 6-foot-6, 255-pound frame and a fastball to match. At his best he has touched 100-101 mph and should again be right at the top of the hardest-throwing arms in the 2021 draft class. He gets to that velocity with ease in the delivery and has good natural feel to spin a breaking ball with flashes of an above-average changeup. Considering the pure stuff, Williams’ upside is tremendous. What holds him back is his control and a few minor injuries that have hampered him throughout his career at ECU. There’s plenty of reliever risk, but those who like him will likely give him a shot to start considering his delivery, size and three-pitch mix. Williams has been primarily used as a reliever with the Pirates, and over three seasons he has thrown 68 innings while posting a 3.57 ERA, striking out 70 batters (9.3 per nine) and walking 32 (4.2 per nine). Williams could rank significantly higher than this with a healthy and strong spring.

After turning down opportunities to get drafted in this year’s Major League Baseball Draft, East Carolina right-handed pitcher Gavin Williams will once again be looked at as one of the top arms in the upcoming 2021 cycle.

Baseball America recently released its updated top prospects list for both the high school and college levels as of August for the 2021 MLB Draft. Williams is ranked the 33rd overall college prospect. The 6-foot-6, 240-pounder is the highest-ranked player in the American Athletic Conference.

Might be the hardest thrower in the class. Has touched 101 in stints. Has dealt with injuries, though nothing major. A finger injury kept him out most of 2019. Carried over into 2020. He's got a distinct curveball and changeup, both of which have at least flashed 55. Just 68 career college innings, he'll need to show added stamina and starter capacity in 2021 to reach his unlikely ceiling of a mid-rotation guy. The floor is an undeniable power reliever.

Baseball America ranked Williams the 81st overall prospect - between college and high school - heading into the 2020 draft. A strong 2021 season could see him shoot up draft boards even more, considering his raw stuff and presence on the mound.

The Fayetteville, N.C., native and Cape Fear product is known for his flamethrowing fastball that has hit 100 mph in the past (most recently against Campbell in the 2019 Greenville Regional championship). But he didn't get to have the junior season he was hoping for, making just two relief appearances after suffering a preseason injury before the season was shut down in early March due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Williams has appeared in 38 games over his ECU career with five starts. He was primarily used as a reliever, going 1-4 overall with a 3.57 ERA and one save. The junior was slated to be the Pirates' frontline ace as a junior, but he instead broke his finger in the preseason and only made two appearances out of the bullpen before COVID-19 ended the college baseball campaign prematurely.

A top recruit as part of the 2017 class, Williams has been slowed by injuries throughout his time with the Pirates. A forearm strain limited his outings as a freshman, though he still managed to post a 1.15 ERA in 15 games. Williams started five games as a sophomore with 21 appearances overall. He struck out 56 compared to 23 walks in 49.1 innings. As a junior, Williams struck out five compared to two walks in three total frames.

In a somewhat surprising development, East Carolina right-handed pitcher Gavin Williams went undrafted in the shortened five-round 2020 Major League Baseball Draft this week.

Williams was a top 85 prospect according to Baseball America and MLB.com, but he was not selected. He was once considered a near-lock to be drafted, but sources close to Williams' situation said the projectable right-hander recently started to have real second thoughts about coming back in the last week. Projected as a third-round pick, Williams' return combined with a healthy and consistent 2021 season could improve his stock into first-round territory, making it worth the chance to return for his redshirt junior campaign.

BA -

Freshman righthander Gavin Williams was a highly touted pitching prospect in the 2017 class and was ranked No. 120 on the BA 500 thanks to a big, projectable frame and easy velocity that scouts projected would get into the triple digits in the future.

The future is now, apparently, as Saturday night Williams touched 100 mph on Baseball America’s radar gun, with many surrounding guns showing 99 on the same pitch. Williams has a lightning-quick arm and sat in the 92-95 mph range for three innings, reaching back for more whenever he needed it, including a 98 mph fastball in his final inning.
