1965

At Shea Stadium, 20 year-old outfielder Ron Swoboda, in-route to finishing the season with 19, breaks the franchise record for home runs hit by a rookie when he goes deep off Dick Ellsworth in the first inning with a three-run homer, a poke that will provide all of the runs the Mets will score in their 3-2 victory over Chicago. Jim Hickman had established the mark with 13 round-trippers in 1962, the club's inaugural season.

1976

The Mets sweep the Giants in a twin bill at Candlestick Park, 4-2 and 4-1. The victories mark the first time in 17 tries that the team has won two games on the same day.

2012

R.A. Dickey, who gives up only a first-inning infield single for his second career one-hitter in the Mets' 9-1 victory over the Rays, breaks the franchise record for consecutive scoreless innings. The 37 year-old knuckleballer, surpassing the previous club mark of 31.2 scoreless innings in a row set by Jerry Koosman in 1973, establishes a new mark of 32.2 frames before an unearned run in the ninth inning snaps his string.

1980: Vida Blue of the San Francisco Giants defeats the Mets, 3 - 1, as Milt May hits franchise home run #9,000 for the Giants. Monte Ward hit home run #1 for the Giants in 1883, and #8,000 was hit by Bobby Bonds on September 4, 1971.

2012: R.A. Dickey of the Mets tosses a one-hitter for a 9 - 1 win over the Rays. The only safety comes in the 1st inning, when B.J. Upton hits a high bouncer that 3B David Wright cannot field with his bare hand; the Mets appeal after the game for the ruling to be reversed to an error, but to no avail. Dickey becomes the majors' first 10-game winner this year, but before the night is out, he is joined by Lance Lynn of St. Louis, who fans a career-high 12 batters in a combined 1 - 0 shutout of the White Sox. 2013: Adam Wainwright becomes the first ten-game winner in the majors this season when the Cardinals defeat the Mets, 2 - 1. Wainwright pitches seven scoreless innings, while Matt Harvey is saddled with his first loss, in spite of a very good performance of his own.

Alvarez looks like a truly live bat. But the slow walk and bat toss? Tell him not a good idea. Opposing 1B did not look amused as Alvarez passed him.

Khalil Lee HR - nice.

Every time I start to think Tony Dibrell is coming on over the past few years, he throws a stinker. Hopefully just a bad day.

Eickhoff is just too HR prone for me to want to see him called up at any time.

Montes de Oca lost for Bklyn yesterday in his second inning, but I believe all 4 of his outs were by the K. Which is exciting to me. Big arms make big Mets pens.

Mets? Highly impressive. When Ground Ball Stroman pitches, Lindor and Luis should start every time as long as they bring their vacuums out on the field with them.

I really like Stroman. I resented him last season. ALL of that is gone. He is a heck of a competitor, and a true craftsman and thinker. Him or Thor to an extension? If one or the other, I cannot forget Noah's inability to stop the steal. Stroman is fundamentally strong in every respect.

Villar so good, bat, D and speed, that I now see JD Davis (who is more one dimensional) eventually returning as a back up. That was some bomb he hit.

Lindor has been all around excellent since bottoming at .157 - he deserves many cheers.

Diaz needs to be added to Jake, Stroman, and Walker as the foursome of pitchers who have the Mets where they are.

Let's hope McKinney knee is sound - he needs to play to truly show who he is before the injured lads return. Almora 1 for 10 so far in rehab. Gotta hit.

Tom - I agree 100% on Eickoff. He has been plagued by the HR all year with a few game exceptions.

Eickoff has mever impressed me. I'd put him behind both Szapucki and Megill on the callup list, and possibly Josh Walker as well.

As for Almora, it looks very much like McKinney is putting a lock on the #5 OF spot once Nimmo and 4to are healthy.

In the IF, I don't know who gets the everyday jobs once McNeil and JDD return. Are they really better than Villar/Guillorme?

Speaking of Villar, I wonder why he's not playing today. Hope it's just a day off and not re-injury. He's certainly better all-around than Peraza, who has been useful but will move upstate omce everyone is healthy.
