the Kansas City Royals for Randy
McGilberry on June 17, 1980.
New York Mets traded Dave Weathers and Jeremy Griffiths to
the Houston Astros for Richard Hidalgo on
June 17, 2004.
1962 |
In a play that is indicative of the struggling Mets, first
baseman Marv Throneberry's apparent first-inning triple becomes an out on an
appeal play for missing second base in an 8-7 loss to the Cubs at the Polo Grounds.
When New York manager Casey Stengel questions the call, he is told by the
umpire, according to legend, "Don't bother arguing, Casey, he missed
first base, too." |
1962 |
Gene Woodling becomes the first major leaguer to play for
both the Yankees and the Mets. In his National League debut, the 38 year-old
outfielder goes 2-for-4, scoring two runs for the new expansion team in an
8-7 loss to the Cubs at the Polo Grounds. |
1974 |
After completing the first 1000 games in franchise history
with a winning percentage of .332, the Mets compile a 517-482-1 record in
their next thousand contests. During the span, that includes Tom Seaver
winning 12% of the team's victories, New York wins two National League
pennants and a World championship. |
1976 |
At Shea Stadium, Dave Kingman hits a walk-off homer to
give the Mets a 1-0 victory over the Dodgers. Sky King's game-ending blast
comes off Charlie Hough in the 14th inning. |
2003 |
Mets starter Jae Seo and two relief pitchers, David
Weathers and Armando Benitez, combine to one-hit Florida, 5-0. The contest is
the third consecutive one-hitter the team has played; Steve Trachsel limited
the Angels to one single two days ago, and last night, Dontrelle Willis beat
New York, 1-0, yielding just one safety. |
2005 |
In a 13-6 loss to Cleveland, the Diamondbacks become the
first team since 1969 to allow ten runs in an inning in consecutive games.
The eventual 1969 World Champion Mets accomplished the dubious feat in just
one day when Houston swept a doubleheader at Shea Stadium. |
2008 |
After a 9-6 victory against the Angels in the first game
of a West Coast road trip, the Mets fire manager Willie Randolph, pitching
coach Rick Peterson, and first-base coach Tom Nieto, shortly after 3 a.m.
Eastern time. The team's 18th manager, who compiled a 302-253 record in 3+
seasons with New York, will be replaced by bench coach Jerry Manuel on an
interim basis until the end of the season. |
1962 - Chicago Cubs outfielder Lou Brock hits a home run into the right-center field bleachers at the Polo Grounds, 460 feet from home plate, in the first game of a Chicago doubleheader sweep over
the New York Mets, 8 - 7 and 4 - 3. Known more for his speed than
his power, Brock becomes the second player to reach that section of
seats. Joe Adcock was the first.
2005: Former Red Sox Brian Daubach starts at first base for the Mets, drawing three walks and
scoring two runs one day after being called up from Triple-A Norfolk. Daubach was drafted by the Mets in the 17th round way back
in 1990, but this is his first big league game for the club.
2009: Matt Wieters of the Baltimore Orioles, the 2008 Minor League
Player of the Year, hits the first home run of
his career in the O's 6 - 4 win over the New York Mets.
You Tube:
Mets 8, Yankees 7 6/17/01: Mike Piazza's two-run home run caps off the Mets' six-run 8th to give them an 8-7 lead over the Yankees.

Szapucki's possible audition for Jake's next start was rated a 5 - as in 5 hits and 5 walks in 4 innings against AAA players. A combined 20 hits and walks over his last 7.2 IP. Meanwhile Jake? 9 up, 9 down, 8 Ks.
Jake is having a complete shoulder replacement performed. A shoulder will be transplanted from the cadaver of a baboon who threw bananas at 99. Jake expects to make his next start, according to his surgeon, Dr. Mack Ade. Dr. Ade expects the surgery to take 5 to 10 minutes, and expects Jake will be soft tossing tomorrow as long as he doesn't slip on a banana peel.
Kidding aside, of course Jake picks the game where he would have thrown a perfect game and fanned 24 to come out early. May he pitch again soon.
Thanks Tom. I asked Syracuse Manager Chad Kreuter about Szapucki last night in the post game press conference. Details at 11.
Corey Oswalt and Nick Tropeano are next in line. Szapucki is going to wait until they clinch in September.
Oswalt needs to be added to the 40 man roster. That could be why Barnes was DFA'd
Maybe for Oswalt, the Nth time is the charm. It happens.
Flexen is 6-3 on his latest of many chances, and formerly 1-15 Sewald is 3-2 with 23 Ks in 14 IP for Seattle, which just announced today that its name is being changed from Mariners to Mets West.
Here's how I see the rotation rankings overall. Assume every starter healthy, if you possibly can. Sure.
1. deGrom 2. Syndergaard 3. Walker 4. Carrasco 5. Stroman 6. David Peterson 7. Joey Lucchesi (with the last two still being clay formed into what they will become,)
Reasoning:
Jake is Jake. Sensational. But if he goes down for a prolonged period of time (or God forbid the rest of the season) this could be over here. Understand this. Ideas: Laugh as you may, but either going to a six-man rotation, or maybe just periodically subbing a starting pitcher in for Jake, should be seriously discussed. This team has starters kind of close to being added in here should they need to. For the life of me, I cannot understand why the heck Corey Oswalt is not an optimal starter yet. He has that potential still I believe anyway. So what has to be figured out is simply what is missing or needed to be added into this with him. Don't give up on Corey.
Noah probably won't be back until 2022. Why risk things with him before that. By 2022, his hair will be longer than Willie Nelson's and "Thor" will be back whole.
Taijuan Walker to me is right now a true MLB two starter, but on any other team not here except now with Noah out. Taijuan Walker absolutely has "ace potential." I salute him.
I like Carlos Carrasco because he has more dominant strikeout potential than other Mets starters behind him. Has 1300 strikeouts in 1242 innings of work career wise. Carlos being added into the mix here should prove "very key" for the rest of this Mets 2021 season. Of course keeping Jake healthy is huge as well, and both these two things will factor in significantly heading into the playoffs.
Marcus Stroman is good and a three starter on most MLB teams, just not here. This is the Mets, remember? Overall Marcus' career won/lost is not terrific at57-51, and he is age 30 now. But he can be terrific and have a "lights out start" at anytime, which we all love to see. His WHIP is solid as well at 1.27 career, and this 2021 season could easily turn out to be his very best one ever.
As for David Peterson, Corey Oswalt, and Joey Lucchesi they are still clay. But I would not bet against any one of them not to become really good MLB starters because each one has that capability. And this is a good thing for this playoff bound NY Mets team.
Make it so.
The Injury Thing Here
Personally, I don't get it. Maybe the shortened 2020 season has some small part in this. But these guys are professional athletes and are young, so this shouldn't be such a large part of all these injuries in 2021.
Exercise. Food Intake. Rest. Repeat.
How well is the team stretching before activity?
Are players maybe getting "too aggressive" with the amount of weight in the weight room? Lower amounts with more reps works well too!
Supplements
If you have not already done so, you might want to look into "Beet Root" supplementation. But always remember this, that with any vitamin or supplement you could take, they all have side effects. All. So include a really wise doctor in this that you know well and have confidence in, so they can advise you with this first.
Study up is good too.
