Mack - Draft Thoughts: Chase DeLauter, Daniel Susac, Carter Young, Kevin Parada, Jud Fabian

7-27-21 - Prospect Love Top 100 2022 Prospects -

23. Chase DeLauter

Outfield, James Madison

DeLauter is a physical specimen. At 6-foot-4, 230 pounds, the product of Martinsburg, West Virginia can really bang at the plate. He burst onto the scene in 2021, slashing .386/.508/.723 with 6 homers and 7 stolen bases in just 26 games. He worked 25 walks and punched out just 14 times. DeLauter has showcased his talents in the Cape Cod League as well, surging confidence in his abilities with big league scouts. Believers see an above average hitter with easy plus raw power. He has a disciplined eye at the plate that should translate to pro ball well. In the field, it’s at least a plus-plus arm in a corner with rangy speed and sound fundamentals. It’s definitely worth giving this kid a shot in centerfield. James Madison hasn’t produced a first round pick since 2007. That may change…

        Mack's spin -

        2021 James Madison stat line - 26=G, 101-AB, .386/.508/.723/1.231, only 14-K,             6-HR

This is the first paper I have on this big guy.

I always caution getting excited about small school players. Remember... they                 aren't playing all season against teams like Florida or Vanderbilt. No, they play             again small other small schools with less talented players that the ones in the big         schools.

For now, I listed him as the 18th outfielder on my board.

16. Daniel Susac        Catcher         Arizona

A big, tall, switch hitting catcher, Susac immediately brings back visions of Matt Wieters at Georgia Tech. Susac has a very good arm behind the plate, and more explosiveness and lateral mobility than most catchers his size do. But this guy will make his money with the bat. A potential plus hitter with plus power, Susac projects a middle-of-the-order impact bat, a run producer and an impact player up the middle of the field.

Mack's spin -

 2021 Arizona stat line - 61-G, 242-AB, .335/.392/.591, 12-HR, 65-RBI, 47-K

Plays well both with a bat or glove in his hand. Solid defensive game and hits for average. Projected to stick at catcher. Worth keeping an eye on.

I currently have him as my 8th catcher, but he could easily move up on my board with a solid junior year.

Texas Rangers’ 2022 Draft Prospects: SS Carter Young

There are some pundits who believe had Vandy’s Carter Young been eligible for the 2021 MLB Draft, he would’ve been the first shortstop off the board. In a class that had Marcelo Mayer, Kahlil Watson and Jordan Lawlar in it, that’s awfully high praise.

He’s projected as a plus defender at shortstop with a good arm. With the bat, Young can hit switch, a huge asset to his game, and does well from both sides of the plate.

Young is also compared to former Vandy product and current Brave Dansby Swanson, who has turned into a productive regular for Atlanta. That’s about all you could ever hope for out of a draftee.

With the Rangers linked to shortstops in 2021, it’s likely they’ll explore the idea of drafting one in 2022. If Carter Young is there when they pick, he’ll surely be in consideration.

Mack's spin -

2021 Vandy Boy stat line - 61-G, 238-AB, .252, 16-HR, 52-RBI, .559-slug%

Young is one of the many talented college shortstops in this draft. He is a defense first player with exceptional defensive skills; however, he does need to step up the offensive production if he wants a big bonis on draft day.

I currently have him on my board as the 5th SS.

7-20-21 - TTF -

Kevin Parada, C, Georgia Tech

This year’s draft is stacked with catchers. Parada and Mississippi’s Hayden Dunhurst, right now, are the very best. From the get, his plus raw power stands out. His swing is electric and should be the model for any young ball player trying to improve their hitting. Behind the plate, he calls a solid game and his mental mindset is the best we’ve seen in the past two drafts.

Mack's spin -

2021 GT stat line - 52-G, 220-AB, team leading .318, 9-HR, 42-RBI, 41-K

This is a big deal draft pick who will easily be picked in the first round. Could even be the first catcher picked.

I have him 1st on my board.

8-3-21 - the sports hub

Jud Fabian was considered a first round pick heading into his junior year at Florida. After a solid, but not too impressive season, his draft stock dipped a bit and allowed the Red Sox to steal the outfielder in the second. Despite that, two teams behind Boston in the draft were offering Fabian $3 million and the Sox were not willing to go that high, according to Peter Gammons.

Mack's spin -

2021 Florida stat line - 59-G, 225-AB, .249/.364/.560/.924, 20-HR

Fabian is an enigma. He came out of high school with a can't miss tag and yet, just didn't make the grade in 2021. Yes, he hit 20 home runs, but that is about all he did.

However, I have faith in the Jud-man and I think he made a wise decision to go back to Florida and dominate in 2022.

I currently have him still high on my board, as the 3rd outfielder.

Always interesting to see what pre-draftees will do in their final upcoming year before the draft.

I did an article for Tuesday about rising guys already in the system.

It is early for this kind of info but will serve as a great intro into these players current season coming up

O.K. fellas so if we QO Conforto and Noah we'll have 4 early picks right? After watching another heartbreaking loss last night my mind went to how much better we could be with a catcher who could actually HIT. Not to beat a dead horse here but TDA just came of the IL and hit a HR and yes not signing Realmuto (which would have taken him off the Phils as well) and Springer looms very large as the disaster that is Lindor and McCann stings more everyday and yes I hold grudges. Watching another painful end to the season my only hope is for another miracle ending which would have to include the return of Jake and much better performance from Lindor and Javy "Kingman" Baez so as I have many times over the years I'm holding my breath and saying LGM!

The Mets have never committed to a rebuild via draft and international signs.

It would take no trades of these prospects for at least 3 years.

Meaning... no run for the pennant for 3 years.

Sadly with the Cohen $ plan that won't happen and more picks like PCA will flourish for other teams
