Mack - 2022 MLB Draft Scouting Report - LHP - Brandon Barriera

Brandon Barriera

Mack's spin -

PG said that Barriera is the 'lefty Dylan Lesko". Wow! That's quite the tag he is going to have to live up to.

Nice mix of 95-FB, 84-SL, and 78-curve.

82 innings pitched, 125 strikeouts, 1.02 WHIP

Mist have him as a mid ranged 1st round pick. Currently, I have him as my 5th LHP coming out of the 2nd round, but I could easily be wrong here.

LHP     6-1     170

BRANDON BARRIERA, LEFT-HANDED PITCHER

In the fourth inning for the East squad Barriera walked speedster Justin Crawford to start the inning. Crawford and his 80-grade wheels proceeded to take both second and third base. But Barriera would have the last laugh. Barriera locked down the inning, striking out two and inducing a weak ground ball. It’s about as heavy a fastball as you can find with darting gyro action and some natural cut, topping out at 94. He mixed in a slower mid-80s slider with two-plane break and a big, deep curveball he threw around the zone to keep hitters timing off. It was a professional showing from Barriera who has the stuff and operation to project a starter at the next level with high-level, advanced stuff.

8-22-21 - Joe Doyle @JoeDoyleMiLB

Brandon Barriera throwing some extremely heavy gyro-heavy fastball/cutters and this low-80s slider with two-plane sweep. Lefty bats having quite an experience here.

8-22-21 - Perfect Game All-American Classic @PGAllAmerican

Brandon Barriera (FL) working mostly 92-94/95 w/ a free & easy AA. Good life; good feel to spin two breakers w/ a hard SL @ 82-84 & CB w/ more 12/6 shape @ 76-78

8-8-21 - BA  -

Brandon Barriera, LHP (Florida)

One of the top lefthanders in the class, Barriera attended all three events and touched 95 mph from the left side in each outing thanks to some of the better arm speed we’ve seen so far. Barriera isn’t a physically imposing pitcher on the mound, listed at just 6-foot-1, 176 pounds, but he has outstanding pure stuff.

Barriera touched 96 mph at East Coast Pro and was routinely in the 90-94 mph range and his fastball has solid late life that allowed the pitch to miss barrels. He was erratic at times with his control and showed a tendency to overthrow his fastball, but also showed a hard slider in the low 80s that flashed two-plane bite and impressive power with spin rates in the 2300-2600 rpm range. Barriera also throws an 84-86 mph changeup that has some tumbling action at best, but he will slow his arm down at times.

Brandon Barriera

Barriera is easily one of the most electric arms in the country, especially from the left side, and it was on full display at PG National. He sat 91-94 and ran it up to 95 with late life, really making life difficult on hitters. The secondaries were no slouch, either, with a low-80s slider that shows good bite and dips under bats plus a mid-80s changeup that he sells pretty well and shows depth and some fade. The frame is athletic and projectable with some present strength in the lower half and the arm is quick. Barriera is a must-see when he takes the hill.

7-27-21 - Prospect Love Top 100 2022 Prospects

15. Brandon Barriera

Left-Handed Pitcher, American Heritage HS

Simply put, Barriera has some of the best stuff in the 2022 class, from the left side no less. It’s a stress-free operation with very little effort and seamless fluidity. Barriera has been up to 97 with significant arm speed and athleticism on the mound. He sits 92-94 in late innings. He’s got a wipeout slider that tunnels the heater well, diving on right-handed hitters and disappearing for lefty bats. He’s shown good feel for a changeup with solid separation and depth. He’s also shown a cutter to lefties. It’s a bulldog mentality, filling up the strikeout and coming right at hitters with attitude. Just 6-foot-1, 180 pounds, Barriera is still getting more and more physical as he matures into more strength.

Brandon Barriera, LHP, American Heritage HS (FL)

He sits between 92 and 94 the later he goes in games. I love his finishing slider, and he can top his heater out at 97 right now. He stands 6’1″ presently, but is still growing. He comes right at hitters and isn’t afraid to throw inside. And if you read my articles, you know I say that pitchers who aren’t afraid to throw inside have good success in the pros.

7-13-21 - bpj - prep players to know -

Brandon Barriera, LHP, American Heritage (Fla.) HS

Barriera isn’t the biggest kid on the mound at 6-foot-1, 170 pounds, but he has a quality mix of pitches that has caused scouts to list Barriera as a name to watch over the next year. He throws from a three-quarters arm slot and uses a low-effort and repeatable delivery. Barriera attacks the strike zone with his low-to-mid-90s fastball, advanced changeup and solid breaking pitch.

7-2-21 - Perfect Game Scout @PG_Scouting

‘22 LHP Brandon Barriera (FL) filthy per usual today. FB up to 95 and sat 92-94, CB/SL/CH all missed bats. Vandy commit

7-2-21 - Brian Sakowski @B_Sakowski_PG

Barriera is in the upper tier of prep players looking towards the ‘22 draft. Whole bunch of projected 60’s on the card.

5-18-21 - PG -

Brandon Barriera (Fla.)

6-1/170 L/L

Commitment: Vanderbilt

PG Events: 24

Key Stats: 82 innings pitched, 125 strikeouts, 1.02 WHIP

Short Story: At 6-foot-1, Barriera is a bit undersized, but don’t tell him that. The way he goes at hitters makes him seem like he is the biggest player on the field. He attacks with a low-90s fastball that has late cut and very similar action on the changeup. The breaking ball has the potential to be a true swing-and-miss offering and he is fearless when using the pitch. It's just a tough, nothing straight, repertoire.

Big Moment: The 15U WWBA in 2019 was the real coming out party. He threw 9+ innings over two outings and struck out 18 hitters. Completely dominant, running the heater up to 93 mph and using his three-pitch mix to torment hitters.

Bold Prediction: The swing-and-miss continues to add up and he has a full summer on the circuit after sprinkles of dominance last summer due to the pandemic.

8. Brandon Barriera - LHP

 Bio:

Height: 6-1

Weight: 170 lbs

Hits/Throws: L-L

Hometown: Coconut Creek, Florida

School: American Heritage (FL)

Barriera presents electric arm speed with a clean down delivery out of a 3/4 slot. FB up to 94 with feel to spin breaking balls and a plus CH. CMD is among best in the class.

11-27-20 - PG -

Barriera is the Dylan Lesko of the left-handed pitchers, with a similar young athletic body, smooth and fluid pitching mechanics and an array of pitches he can spot with maturity.  Barrriera works in the low-90s with his fastball to go with a plus change up and a hard breaking ball that he has very good feel for moving around the zone.  The Vanderbilt commit struck out 52 hitters in 35 innings at PG tournaments in 2020 while allowing only eight hits.
