Tom Brennan - St Lucie Mets Season Recap

Vincent Perozo (source: MILB)

Unlike the FCL Mets also based in St Lucie, who compiled a 32-18 (.640) winning record, the St Lucie Mets rocked it like … oh … the 1963 NY Mets, finishing out at 44 wins, 84 losses.

I thought it was only 40 below in Siberia.

My co-MVPs at St Lucie were:

A) Jett Williams, with a .422 OBP and 32 steals in 79 games, with 51 runs before his promo to Brooklyn.

B) SS Wilfredo Lara, who had 14 HRs amongst his 35 extra base hits there in 96 games there, with 50 runs, 49 RBIs and 14 steals.

C) Jacob Reimer, hitting a solid .280 there before his promotion.

All 3 were 19 years old at the time of said accomplishments.

Also, Kelvin Villavicencio had a .295 OBP and 23 steals, and flashed fine 2B leather. Also 19, but little power.

18 year old infielder Marco Vargas did great after debuting with St Lucie after an equally impressive FCL stint. .419 OBP in 6 games.

Finally, 20 y/o C Vincent Perozo has 45 RBIs in 86 games (hitting .229).

Given the team’s poor win loss record, pitching was unimpressive.

Three K Kings (Felipe De La Cruz, Doug Orellana and Saul Garcia) all had ERAs between 4.65 and 5.35 and fanned 314 in 243 innings, but also walked 138 and hit 20 batters.

58 pitchers stepped up on the bump for St Lucie in 2023. The last game was a doozy - a six hitter, but 13 runs and 13 walks. Some hurlers may get their walking papers.

Of the 58 hurlers, Omar Victorino threw one inning, allowing 4 hits, 8 walks, and 11 runs. He got his money’s worth.

Between the FCL and St Lucie, he totaled 21 innings, 28 hits, 28 walks, and 34 runs, but he just turned 18 in June, so he’s wild and young, and I’m staid and old.

The team was (what else?) last in runs scored by 25, with 5runs.

Pitching-wise, last in ERA at 5.68, nearly a half run worse than the 9th team. And last in WHIP at 1.59. And Free Pass Amusement Park, with 698 walks. 100 unearned runs, too. Not too spiffy.

Better luck next year.

WALK LIKE A MAN, MY SON:

Jett Williams, remarkably, has walked or been HBP 116 times in 115 games, in part the reason he has 44 steals - he gets on base with extreme frequency.

IT’S NO BIGGIE NOTHING BROKEN:

“Alvarez was hit by a pitch -- one of three Mets to get hit by pitches on Sunday -- in the fifth inning of Sunday’s 2-0 win against the Twins. “

STOP BEING WIMPS. RETALIATE.

METS LOSE MONDAY NIGHT: Good. Keep losing, pick higher.

The Jett promotion to Binghamton is setting up some collision come ST 2026

Stay with me here

Jeff McNeil was the second baseman

He now is permanently in the outfield while Ronny Mauricio is establishing himself at second as the most productive Baby Met

Francisco Lindor is the SS for the remainder of the decade

But

There are 2 more middle infielders that will graduate for the start of 2026

Luisangel Acùna and Jett Williams

So let's say Acùna gets put in CF

WHAT DO YOU DO WITH JETT?

AND WHAT ABOUT THOSE 2 OUTFIELDERS PURCHASED IN THE VERLANDER DEAL?

Fun times

*collision course

Mack, as we know that these things have a way of working themselves out, I must say that the Mets need to know how to self scout better than they used to. The talent this organization has thrown away frivolously is incredible. As for McNeil, he better start seeing videos of Daniel Murphy because his lame pop ups into short left field, have to go.

Everybody in Met Land seems to be stuck on the PCA and Kelenic trades.

I'm not

Trading prospects who haven't done a thing yet for an established star is a good move

And let's not argue the Baez addition. The Mets were sure he would resign to play next to his buddy but a slow start and unprofessional fans turned him off this city

And by the way

What would be your starting outfield right now if they both were still Mets?

I can't believe that trio won't be up at the end of next year or sooner. Talent has a way of doing that.

Mack Ade said...

They might

But the Mets are well known for slow pacing prospects to keep a year of eligibility

How is Mauricio not playing 3b

Baty to me has shown nothing to say he is the 3b of the future….

We do have to turn the page on those trades but let’s not diminish them.
They were ungodly awful.
Kelenic should have been a deal breaker for cano Diaz no matter what.
And Baez should not have been acquired period.
Don’t for get the E Rodriguez deal.
Players are assets and we wastes high priced assets regardless of the results of their career.
Those players alone should have commanded premier talent acquisition. And before anyone say Diaz was that we got 1 year of that in Diaz and he was no sure thing coming I to last season.
We could have acquired Hader for less ( because we wouldn’t have needed to take back cano) and been as good

What about Jeremiah Jackson who has been great since the Mets acquired him. Maybe a Utility IF in 2026? Some people feel that he will start in AAA next season. If not start there will probably be promoted there sometimes next season.

Depth is pretty cool huh?

Eddie rocks.

I love Edwin, although he found out the Mets (and Jets) are cursed, what with Diaz and Rodgers injuries.

I have an upcoming article on Jett. I think the latest he’ll be ready is opening day 2025.

Eddie, I think to Mack’s point, some prospects turn out to be busts - or mediocre - enter Jarred Kelenic, career .201. BUT…you are correct…maybe we could have given up less than the 6th overall pick.

Lastly, Mack, I think Jett goes to OF, Acuna to 2B. Acuna probably will be a Gold Glove caliber 2B.

Gilbert to me feels a lot like Conforto II. And that ain’t bad.

Gus, McNeil needs to watch tapes of himself in the second half of 2019. He had 16 HRs in 57 games after the 2019 ASB. Not very many since.

Eddie

Deals are a reality

Again...

Anytime you can get an established star for an unknown prospect is a good deal regardless if the star pans out

Mack Ade said...

Tom and Eddie

It's hard to stand up to both of you joined at the hip but I will

Edwin Diaz was a superb choice

So was Javier Baez

As for Endy Rodriguez he was way down the Mets catcher prospect list and was the perfect throw in to seal a deal

Mack Ade said...

And come on

Both of you were dancing in the halls when the Mets purchased these stars

Mack Ade said...

LET'S KEEP THIS DISCUSSION GOING

At some point, the Mets (like most teams) will need to acquire an established player, either at the deadline or in the off-season.
Having all the above talent and others will enable us to make trades without seriously diminishing the system.

It's a blessing, not a curse.

Mack Ade said...

And that is what they tried to do with Diaz and Baez

I think Yamamoto is in their pocket

Let's remember Marte will be back

Past that I would bring in another starter.

Tom Brennan said...

I am driving. Enjoy the repartee.

Gary Seagren said...

Marte another aging injured star and I'm sure more salary to eat for SC. I just wonder when he'll get tired of doing that. I had a crazy dream that Jett was our Jet QB now wouldn't that be wild. My big issue with the Cano deal was BVW was his former agent so to me something stinks with that but of course BVW and Cano made out like bandits and no one ever said anything.

Mack Ade said...

I'm predicting one more good year.from Marte but with what DJ is doing this year Marte might fit in better as a UT or DH

The kids arrive in 2026

Mack Ade said...

I just read that Bowden predicts that Ohtani will be a Met next season

Interesting

That would pretty much sew up the DH slot

Mack Ade said...

David Stearns and Mets agree.on POBO. Eppler will remain GM

Mack,
Outstanding!
What is your impression of Joey Cora as a coach? Would he be one to keep as a coach if Stearns replaces Buck as manager?
