Tom Brennan - The Mets Are 3-1…So Do Not Over Analyze

TOM’S TASTY TIDBITS

The 1986 Mets won 108 games in the regular season.

They started out winning just two of their first five. That’s .400 ball.

I am guessing there was a veritable boatload of over analysis back then.

“Is this Team overrated?”

Well, after those five games, they went 106–51, so I would say no, they weren’t overrated.

(I told my boss at the time that the Mets would win 105 games in 1986. He thought I was nuts. He was right. They won three more.)

The same with this 2026 team. Bo is off to a slow start, but it’s just five games. And he got robbed on a bullet liner at the right fielder that didn’t quite drop in. Had it, his very low batting average after four games would be a lot higher. I am not in the least concerned with Bo.

High level view? Let’s see now.

I am not concerned with the offense.

I am not concerned with the defense.

I am not concerned with the starting pitching.

I am not concerned with the bullpen.

I am concerned, however, when fans are booing the new great hitter, Bo Bichette, in game 3.

After a year’s hiatus, I decided to do a test.

I posted something on a Mets Fan page on Facebook. The responses that came back were oh-so-many, and demonstrated that there was a great need for psychiatric help.

I will not over analyze this team.

They are three and one.

Heck, if they moved the fences in 5 feet as I had suggested on a fairly frequent (constant?) basis in recent years, they would be 4–0.

My only concern is how much they will win the division by.

Other than that, I am chill.

How about you?

3-1 is so much better than 1-3, my math teacher would have chimed in.

Bichette, IIRC, also lined out hard to the first baseman with men on in game 2. If you want to feel good about how this lineup will play out, think about the fact that Bo has 3 RBI in 4 games (120 RBI pace) and he hasn’t really hit at all and has left a ton of guys on base - something he’s never done in his career. Even a moderately better start and he’d easily have 8-10 RBI in 4 games. And I don’t think that the number of baserunners in front of him has been flukey. It should look like that all season. This team is going to hit, and we’re going to score a LOT of runs.

Not worried about much beyond Mendoza’s panicky and often short-sighted bullpen usage. Excited to see Senga tonight.

Well said, Tom. It is way too early for anything of statistical significance, and given the ups and downs that all players have during a season there any changes would be overcorrections at this point. What does matter is seeing someone hit the ball hard - it means they are seeing pitches. Bo will be fine and the boos will turn to cheers.

Adam, we agree here.

Absolutely. Lots of wins are coming. I’d hate to face this line up. And the Mets’ pitching.

It is being reported that the Mets have hired J D Martinez as a special consultant. I would hope his first priority would be to work with Mark and get him on track. In 2024 he was credited to have assisted several players with their batting. This should be an excellent move.
