Carlos Gomez Trade | Christopher Soto - Let's slowly recap what the heck happened last night.

• Review
• Yesterday before the start of the game, the Mets and the Brewers agreed on a deal that would send CF Carlos Gomez to NY in exchange for SP Zack Wheeler and IF Wilmer Flores. The deal was agreed upon pending physicals and the Brewers even informed Carlos Gomez that as soon as the team's flight landed in Milwaukee, he would be connecting to NY. During the game, Team Doctors on the Mets staff became alarmed about a potentially significant hip issue that was on Carlos Gomez's medical report. The medical team reported back to Sandy Alderson who then proceeded to pull the offer from the table.

• Analysis: 
• For the Mets, when healthy, Carlos Gomez is one of, if not, the top offensive/defensive combination CF in baseball. Over the past 3 seasons with the Milwaukee Brewers, he has average a .276 AVG, .815 OPS with 22 HR and 37 SB per season. This kind of production combined with his defense would be worth +5.5 Wins Above Replacement per season. Carlos Gomez is also signed for 2016 as well.

• For the Brewers, Zack Wheeler is a tremendously high upside arm that is recovering from surgeries to repair his UCL tear and a flexor tendon tear. Currently he is not expected to return to the mound until late June of 2016. Of the Mets big pitching prospects, Wheeler turned out to be the most inefficient one of the bunch as he regularly had trouble getting out of the 5th inning before throwing 100 pitches. It is reasonable to believe that Wheeler will not return to 100% form until 2017 which gives the Brewers 3 years of control. If Wheeler returns to his usual self he returns an average of +2.5 WAR per season. Wilmer Flores would serve as the Brewers new 3B where his defensive abilities would play up . So far this season Flores has been worth +1.1 WAR and could reasonably finish at +2.0 WAR. He would come with the same amount of control as Wheeler.

• In total the Mets would received a forecasted +7.0 future WAR of value from Gomez while the Brewers would receive +15.5 WAR from the combination of Wheeler and Flores. On paper the Brewers would win the deal, however, the Mets would receive the bulk of their value up front while the Brewers would be waiting till 2017 really start receiving the benefit. You could conceivably argue that if Gomez were extended through the 2019 season (when Wheeler and Flores become free agent) the WAR value would be around +19.0 for Gomez thus making the Mets the winners of the deal. In the grand scheme of things......this would have been a very fair trade for both sides.

• Fall-Out
• 1st.... The bridge is burned with the Milwaukee Brewers. That means no Gomez and no Gerardo Parra either.

• 2nd....This sets the markets for OFs with an additional year of control. Looks for the Mets to revisit Jay Bruce and Josh Reddick.

• 3rd.....With news that it was Gomez's medicals that didn't check out....not Wheeler....other teams could now be interested in Wheeler as a trade piece. Perhaps the Rockies would be interested in Wheeler plus prospects in an exchange for Charlie Blackmon.

Mack's Mets Injury Report- 

• It is with great regret and disappointment that I would like to officially announce that Mack's Mets will be placing me on the 15 Day DL. After multiple medical reviews, it has been determined that I have sustained a Rotator Cuff Tear as well as a Labrum Tear in my right shoulder. I will be going under the knife on August 5th to get the tears repaired and will be unable to maintain the website for the next 3-4 weeks as I will be immobilized. Mack Ade will be returning starting August 3rd to provide coverage while I am away.

The Morning Report 7.29.2015 | Mejia Busted Again, Wright Almost Ready for Rehab Games, Clippard Motivated to Beat Nationals, Mets Still Targeting Parra or Gomez

Kevin Draper | Deadspin- Mets closer Jenrry Mejia was suspended 80 games for testing positive for stanozolol in April. While he didn’t appeal his suspension, Mejia professed his innocence. His suspension was completed in early July, and Mejia has since given up zero runs in 7 1/3 innings. But his successful return proved to be short-lived, as Mejia was suspended 162 games today for a second positive test, this time for stanozolol AND boldenone. And what did Mejia have to say in his defense this time? [Nothing] 

(Chris Soto: Nah Nah Na Na...Hey Hey Hey....Goodbyyeee. This is a disgrace to the Mets organization. Not only for testing positive again, but for thinking that it was still ok to take the banned substance so shortly after completing a previous suspension. What was he thinking? With Mejia eligible for arbitration this off-season, he is now a sure fire candidate to be non tendered and released to become a free agent. Add $2.6M to this off-season's available budget and $865k for the rest of this season.)


Mack Burke | NY Daily News- Even though Sandy Alderson has become active in improving the Mets for a playoff push, the biggest reinforcement could be a few weeks away. David Wright returned to regular baseball activity Tuesday at Citi Field, taking ground balls on a field for the first time and hitting in the cage. He had spent the last couple of weeks of his physical therapy and rehab in Los Angeles from a back problem participating in light baseball activity. Wright said that despite the fact that the activities don’t seem heavy or taxing, he’s letting loose and being as intense as he possibly can during his workouts. He plans to do more drills on Wednesday.

(Chris Soto: Early indications are that David Wright could be playing in Port St. Lucie minor league games by this time next week. If that truly is the case then one can assume that he would need 2-3 weeks to get back into shape and should be available to play for the MLB club in late August for roughly the last 30 games of the season. In the meantime, Juan Uribe seems to be doing just fine as Wright's official fill-in. In his first 3 games with the club, Uribe is 3 for 7 so far with only 1 K. ) 

Mike Puma | New York Post- Tyler Clippard didn’t have to wait long for his Mets debut. A day after he was acquired from the Athletics for minor league pitcher Casey Meisner, the veteran righty was summoned to protect a four-run lead Tuesday.“I was anxious to get out there and put that first one under my belt,” Clippard said. “I am really excited to be back in the NL East. National League baseball is my kind of baseball for sure and the Mets are right in the mix and it’s going to be a lot of fun chasing down my old teammates in Washington. Everybody was talking before the season that rotation was one of the best in the game. From what I’ve seen this year, this rotation here in New York compares if not better than what they’ve got over there."

(Chris Soto: Nice. I like the fire included in Clippard's comments. That's actually quite the added bonus that Clippard brings to the Mets. He has a score to settle with his former team as the Nationals traded him away after the 2013 season because rising bullpen star Drew Storen "was younger and more affordable." Clippard should provide some superb late inning relief coverage as the Mets look to start making progress on the Nationals. Last night's victory and the Nats loss now only separate the two teams by 1 game making this weekend's series against each other the most important one this season.)

Michael Baron | Just Mets- With the Mets having secured Juan Uribe, Kelly Johnson and Tyler Clippard ahead of the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline, the Mets are continuing their search for an outfielder to add to their equation. People in the Mets organization have liked Brewers OF Gerardo Parra for a number of seasons [and] with his pending free agency, the Brewers have made him available.  [However], the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’s Tom Haudricourt tweeted earlier on Monday that they could be looking to make a big move to acquire Gomez.

(Chris Soto: Carlos Gomez makes a ton of sense for the Mets. He is owed only $2.7M for the rest of 2015 and is under contract through the 2016 season for a VERY reasonable $9M. Acquiring someone like Gomez will allow the club to let Lagares have Tommy John Surgery and patiently allow him to recover so that he is 100% for the 2017 season. In the meantime, the Mets would have one of the top hitting CF's in their line-up which would make them legitimate contenders for playoff runs in both seasons. )

At least once a week, I get a blind email from someone who's followed my career and wants to know how to get into the game. I always feel bad because I have no good answer. There is no roadmap, there is no secret, and there are no shortcuts, and some conference or class probably isn't going to help. I got my first gig at 43 years old after well over a decade of banging around and busting it to prove my worth in a niche of the game that I loved. I worked very hard, I got extremely lucky and I was more than fortunate enough to have a partner in Margaret Nissen who supported my desire to follow a dream despite all the necessary compromises, which is HUGE. There was some good news here, especially Carlos Gomez. I started tracking Gomez when he went 7-2, 1.47 for the 2010 DSL Mets s a starter. The GCL team turned him into a reliever last year (1.59), but he’s back again in the rotation. He now has 11.2 scoreless innings

Kevin Canelon is an interesting read. The 19-year old, 6-1 lefty is pitching his third year for the DSL Mets and, frankly, I thought he earned a visa after last year’s numbers (14-starts, 1-1, 2.95, 55.0-IP, 40-K, 20-BB). He was probably held back to work on his control which seemed just fine Saturday night.

There really isn’t anything more that Steven Matz can do at the A level. I expect him to go to St. Lucie sometime in the next two weeks.

A 0.96 ERA in the PCL? Did I really just type this? Jacob deGrom is making a lot of teams send a lot of scouts to every game this guy is throwing lately. This is his third AAA start and we’ll have to see if this holds.

With nearly half the season in the books, the Washington Post's Barry Svrluga took a look at the offseason's biggest bargains. He starts his list with Marlon Byrd of the Mets, who signed a minor league deal but has contributed 12 home runs and a .258/.309/.493 line in 237 plate appearances. - LINK

                              File this under "things that never change" as Strike Davis got ejected for arguing a 3rd strike...will this dude ever get it. And speaking of Strike did you hear anything about him going off in the dugout to the point of having to call Sandy to talk to him and calm him down when Lutz was recalled instead of him? I agree with the booth as far as the team looking much more involved and interesting what with EY leading off, (gee a leadoff switch hitter with speed....oh by the way didn't we have one of those guys not too long ago and wouldn't he look good at SS)  the addition of Wheeler and your friend Josh showing us all how refreshing it is to actually make contact with the ball.

Ike Davis was very unhappy when Zach Lutz was called up instead of him. My understanding is that Wally Backman said that ‘they’ weren’t done fixing him yet. This is Wally’s day in the sun and expect a little milking here.

Look I get the fascination with long ball but having to watch the adventures of both Davis and Duda on offense and defense game in and game out waiting for a meaningful HR, not a solo shot when were up or down big, I'd much rather our newer version even though  I know it's a small sample size. Just check out the team we're modeling ourselves after, the Giants, and they only had one strong offensive player (Posey with only 24 HR) when they won it all in 2012. Hey it certainly can be done just so we stay with the plan .......PLEASE.

I don’t think you’re experiencing any plan right now. This is just a ‘hodge-podge’ of secondary players that are have no pressure on them whatsoever to produce at any level that would elevate them to a playoff team.

Your question about Smith reminds me of a telephone conversation I had today with an old Mack’s Mets reader (Marc Dannenberg from Spain) about the year’s before draft and I told him I haven’t even come up with an opinion of those guys yet.

I haven’t seen Smith play so I really have no opinion yet.  Let’s hope, right?

I realize that this year I know nothing of the starters at Brooklyn, Kingsport, or the GCL. While some bats (Lupo, Beccera, Rosario) have gotten press, I've heard very little about pitchers. Could you give me five names to keep my eye on this summer?

                Miller Diaz – I was surprised that Diaz didn’t make the Savannah staff on opening day. The 6-1 RHP Venezuelan just turned 21 and I consider him the ace of the staff. This is the fifth year he’s been a Met and, at this pace, he should get to Queens around 40 years old. So far: 2-G, 0-1, 2.79, 9.2-IP, 11-K

Seth Lugo – Lugo was a 34^th round college pick so he needs to pitch well and move quickly. The classic Mets profile: 6-4, 190, RHP. So far: 2-G, 1-0, 5.00

John Gant – Gant is a guy that you are frankly lucky to see this year. The only reason he’s in Brooklyn is because he was blocked in Savannah, where he actually did wind up last season (10.38). He’s off to a good start: 2-G, 11.0-IP, 1-1, 2.45, 16-K, 2-BB

Robert Gsellman – Gsellman is an interesting story. He’s a 13^th round pick in 2011 that just sort of hung around in 2011 (GCL – 4.15) and 2012 (K-Port – 3.92). This year, due to injuries from other pitchers, he was sent to St. Lucie (3.00) and Savannah (3.72). The 19-year old has now settled in at the development level he should be at and he’s started twice so far, tossing 9.0 scoreless innings (0.00).

Akeel Morris – Morris is no longer considered a prospect starter; however, he is being reinvented as a relief specialist and is off to a good start this season (3-G, 6.2-IP, 13-K, 0.00).

RHP Cory Mazzoni - Mazzoni is an interesting name for 2013 after a rather underwhelming 2012 debut for the '11 second rounder. A strikeout per nine mark around 6.5 between High-A and Double-A is a big red flag. Additionally, he seemed to have problems putting away Double-A hitters (.281 opponent average, 1.00 home run per nine), an unexpected turn for a guy known for a nice mix of polish as well as mid-90s heat. For that reason, scouts think his stuff would play up in shorter bursts. And should the Mets make that transition, expect Mazzoni's mix of command, velocity, and decent secondary stuff to move very quickly

I really don’t know where to project Mazzoni in 2013. The Binghamton rotation is kind of wide open right now. Rafael Montero should go back to St. Lucie, but probably will be rushed to Binghamton. Other candidates other than Mazzoni are Angel Cuan, Chase Huchington, Eric Goeddel, Tyler Pill, John Church, and Brandon Moore.There’s no rush here. I would slot him in as SP2 behind Montero and let him pitch the entire season in Binghamton. Long term, I see his future as a member of the pen.

Brian Schneider:

“It hasn’t been an easy decision, but there are a lot of factors,” said the 36-year-old free agent. “You don’t want to retire, but you think of your family and I think more than anything it’s physically how you feel. I’d kind of like to leave on my own terms and not have my last impression of baseball be someone telling me I can’t play. But there is a lot going on in my life and I’m very fortunate to have a great family and start being a dad and being around more often and being a good husband.”

I really liked the trade of Schneider and OF Ryan Church to the Mets for bad—boy Lastings Milledge. I thought the Mets got rid of a trouble that would only get worse and received two legitimate front line every day players. I expected both to become long time Mets players and his first season with the Mets (.257, 9-HR, 38-RBI) showed promise, but then everything went south in 2009. As for Church, a couple of concussions caused his career to come to an end in 2010.

Carlos Gomez- In the event that Ellsbury has injury woes again in 2013, or commands a contract that’s outlandish, Gomez (28 years old heading into 2014 and another Boras client) would be a solid fallback option.  One of the players the Mets dealt to Minnesota in the Johan Santana trade, Gomez has established himself as an elite defensive center fielder.  It’s taken a while for Gomez’ offense to catch up to his defense, but he made huge strides in 2012.  For his career, he’s still only a .247 hitter with a .294 OBP, but he flashed above average power last year (cracking 19 home runs) while upping his average to .260.  Another Boras client, the Mets should be open to bringing Gomez back and sticking him in center field if Ellsbury isn’t brought in.

I don’t care what any of the minor league weenies will tell you now. We were all upset when this trade (Gomez, pitchers Deolis Guerra, Phillip Humber and Kevin Mulvey were sent to the Twins for the two time Cy Young Award winner Johan Santana) went down. We are in the weenie business and these were the four best in the organization at the time.  But, like the Brian Schneider – Ryan Church story above, no one is certain in this business. Still, I would love to see Gomez back in centerfield for the Mets. I see him as a 20-25HR, .280 tops guy with impeccable defense (please don’t forget how many games this team has lost the past three years because of poor defense)

8-22-11: - Stock Up – OF Dustin Lawley – Lawley hit his 8th home run last night for K-Port, raising his stat line to .304/.341/.527/.867. We’d gladly take a .527 slugging percentage from all the Mets outfielders. Don’t like the 9-E in 50-G, but the system will gladly live with it if he keeps producing this kind of pop.

8-22-11: - Stock Up – P Carlos Gomez – Let’s not forget about somebody I did a lot of talking about last season Gomez aced the DSL league in 2010 as a starter (7-2, 1.47) and he’s equaling that as a reliever this season for the GCL team (1.59 after 8-G). I was surprised when he didn’t start this year, though I understand there isn’t a lot of velo here.Still, he continues to excel.

8-22-11: - Stock Down – P Randy Fontanez – Boy, talk about a bad outing! Fotanez was crusing this season in Brooklyn (9-G, 6-St , 0-1, 2.79) until today: 1.1-IP, 6-R, 3-ER. We usually write these hiccups off, especially ones like this. Fontanez was called upon to pitch after Chris Hilliard on ly went two innings. There’s a good chance he wasn’t mentally prepared for this outing.

8-22-11: - Stock Up – CL Josh Stinson – Okay, remember this night. Stinson disappointed as a starter this year, afer a surprisingly great stint in 2010 for Buffalo. The Mets are now using him as a closer and he’s consistently sitting at 94-95 and hitting 96. Okay, it’s straight, but it’s working and you might see him closing for the Mets in Septemeber… if there ever is another closing opportunity.

8-24-11: - Stock Up – Lucas Duda – Duda continues to play like the Mets are still in a pennant race. He hit another home run last night, and you may see many more before the season ends. We’ve witnessed his hot bat in the minors and it looks like the Mets have found their permanent right fielder.

7-20-11: - Please welcome our newest member of the “Keepers” list. Montero started this year with the DSL team, where he went 1-1, 1.00, in four starts. Now, he’s pitching for the GCL team and he is 1-1, 1.96, after five games, three starts. For the year combined, he’s got 44-K and only 6-BB in 41.0-IP. We need to keep an eye on this 6-0 right handed 20-year old.


Zach Lutz:


7-20-11: - Lutz got hit in the head with a baseball yesterday. This is not to be confused with the other time he has been hit in the head this year with a baseball. He also broke a finger while in the dugout after… yes… being hit with a baseball. Lutz tried to stay in the game this time, spent a little time thinking he was back in Kansas, and was removed with what obviously was at least a concussion. I don’t think we’ll see him back this year. He needs sto spend some time away from this game… and baseballs.

Fastball was popping in at 91-92 and the slider looked decent. Control issues and some defensive butchery made things worse. He is only 22, which I always forget, since it seems like he has been around forever. I still think he could be a useful piece out of the pen if he figures out how to get the groundballs back. Everybody else in the org is adding a cutter, so maybe he should try it.


Lenny Randle:


Randle was originally drafted by the Washington Senators in 1971. A year later, the Senators relocated and became known as the Texas Rangers. He spent the next two years shifting back and forth between the minors and the majors before having a breakout season in 1974. At the time, Randle was playing second base, third base and the outfield. He played all three of those positions in 1975 before becoming the starting second baseman in 1976. On March 28, 1977, Maury Wills' son, Bump Wills, was named the starting second baseman for the Rangers following the end of spring training. After hearing this, Randle approached his manager, Frank Lucchesi, and ended up punching Lucchesi in the face. Lucchesi ended up needing plastic surgery to repair his cheekbone. For his actions, Randle was suspended 30 days without pay and fined $10,000.
