A very good athlete, he has the actions to stick at shortstop but a move to second base or third is likely and the bat will play well. His excellent bat speed allows him to wait on his pitch and drive it to all fields and he shows a patient approach at the plate because of that ability. Through 33 games, he is hitting .391/.562/.977 with nine doubles, three triples, 12 home runs and has stolen 16 bases. 3-19-14 – TTF – Jace Fry, LHP, Oregon State (NR) - Another Beaver to make the list, Fry has been ridiculous of late. Over his last two starts, he has allowed three hits over 18 shutout innings, including a no-hitter against NIU on March 8. For the season, he now has a 1.56 ERA, 0.84 WHIP and 25 K/6 BB over 40.1 innings. At 6’-0” and 200 pounds, the southpaw isn’t a power arm but knows how to use his stuff. His fastball sits in the 89-93 mph range with late movement, and he will use his slider to both sides of the plate. He adds a change-up and adds/subtracts to keep hitters off balance. 3-20-14 – Jordan Brink, RHP, Fresno State - The 6’-1”, 190 pound right-hander wowed scouts this past fall when he was touching 97 mph with his fastball. He also showed a plus, mid-80s slider and a change-up that is rapidly developing. He was a position player his freshman season and used in relief his sophomore year, so the arm is fresh. He has a fast arm, which is great for projection despite his size. Through five starts, he has a 2.12 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 26 K/14 BB over 34 innings, holding opponents to a .168 batting average. Still new to starting, the command shouldn’t be an issue. He has also drawn 22 walks and has struck out six times. His versatility makes him intriguing because of all the options he has. As a pitcher, he can hit the low-90s to go with an upper-70s slider. He can play the outfield where his arm would play well, third base where the arm and bat would play well, but catcher may be his best position, and he has all the tools to stick there. He may not be facing the best competition but he has always performed well on the showcase scene and is an alumni of Team USA Baseball. 3-26-14 – TTF – 10 high school players on the rise — third edition – Jeremy Vasquez, OF/1B, Martin County HS (FL) - Vasquez made the list last week, and he makes it again after going 14-for-20 over his last six games with nine doubles and six walks. For the season, he is now hitting a silly .596/.683/.958 over 15 games with 12 doubles, a triple, a home run and 12 walks to just three strikeouts. At 6’-1” and 200 pounds, he generates a ton of power from the left side and has an advanced approach at the plate — rarely missing a pitch. There will be added pressure put on his bat if he is relegated to first base, but the bat is special and the power is legit. One of the youngest players in his class, the upside is even greater. 3-20-14 – Spencer Turnbull, RHP, Alabama - A power arm, the 6’-3”, 220 pound right-hander can touch 98 mph with his fastball and he adds an upper-70s curveball that is inconsistent but has a lot of potential. He also has some minor mechanical issues that need refining, but the Cubs have shown the confidence in selecting players who have a lot of potential but just need some tweaks here and there. Over 29.2 innings this season, he has a 0.31 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 26 K/15 BB, holding opponents to a .141 batting average. He also has allowed just one extra-base hit all season. 1-24-14 – Kyle Schwarber is a similar prospect to Derek Fisher in that he is enticing because of his patience and power potential, but he strikes out a fair amount as well. Schwarber gained publicity when he led the University of Indiana to an impressive College World Series run last season. Playing catcher, he hit a number of majestic home runs that displayed his incredible raw power. For the season, he hit 18 home runs with an impressive 1.102 OPS. While Schwarber currently plays catcher, he is unexceptional behind the plate and would likely have to move to first base. Toussaint is one of the riskier picks at the top of the draft, but he has as high a ceiling as any prospect out there. Touki is obviously still on the map but he’s given more cause for concern then these two have at least recently. He’s already gotten his fastball into the high 90s and he’s got one of the fastest arms I’ve seen. 8-16-13 - 11th All-American Classic - Jakson Reetz | C/ RHP/OF | Norris HS (Hickman, NE) - eight/Weight: 6-foot-1, 190 pounds B/T: R/R  Draft Day Age: 18 years, 5 months  Commitment: Nebraska - History: Reetz entered the summer as a talented but raw backstop, flashing big athleticism and almost casual actions on the field, belying his loud and impactful tools. In the Metrodome in June, Reetz stood out at the PG National Showcase for his catch-and-throw game, gunning down multiple baserunners and showing sub-2.0 pop times to second, in addition to a couple of hard hit balls, in game. He has built on that showcase throughout the summer, making loud contact with increasing regularity throughout his showcase and tournament stops. Like Reid-Foley and McKinney, Reetz’s Tournament of Stars performance at the end of June bought him a ticket to the USA Baseball 18U Team Trials, and the Nebraska commit continued a successful summer with impressive showings at both the Perfect Game 17U National Championship in July and the Area Code Games last week. - Development: Reetz added another impressing showing to his summer, earning MVP honors for the game. While he struggled some handling the arms while behind the plate, no player had a greater impact offensively. Reetz went 2-for-4 with a long opposite-field double off of hard-throwing Dylan Cease, and added three stolen bases to his output over the course of his four trips to the plate. There is simply no ignoring the growth in Reetz’s game over the past two months, and he’ll get a chance to add to his rapidly expanding resume should he earn a spot on the final USA Baseball 18U squad. 8-25-13 - It’s Tyler Kolek’s size that makes him standout, but the stuff is just as big. He features a heavy fastball that he can work down in the zone with through a big leg kick. The fastball sat in the mid-90s  while topping out at 96 MPH during the Area Code Games. However, the fastball touched 99 MPH at the Perfect Game All American Classic. While the big velocity receives all the publicity, Kolek also possesses an advanced curveball with depth that can feature nasty two-plane break at times. The curveball comes in anywhere from 77 to 80 MPH, but the vertical break can be inconsistent. The control profile is iffy, but that can be expected from a 17-year-old with special offerings, as he’s still learning how to harness his pitches and get them over for the strikes. Kolek could become the first prep pitcher to be taken off of the board due to his combination of size and power stuff. Nick Gordon, SS/RHP, Olympia HS (FL) - The son of  Tom “Flash” Gordon, Nick also can sling it on the mound (92 mph) but may have a brighter future at shortstop, where his strong arm, range and instincts will make him one of the better defensive shortstops in the 2014 MLB draft. Offensively, he hits from the left side and projects to a top-of-the-order hitter with speed and a very good approach at the plate. 8-10-13 - New Balance Area Code games - Bennett Sousa (FL) started for the Yankees and stood out the most among their arms that went. He threw from a ¾ arm slot and generated good side arm run with his 89-91 MPH fastball. He did a solid job commanding the pitch and keeping it down in the zone. In the second, his fastball was more 87-89 MPH. Reetz is a three-sport athlete who also plays quarterback and point guard. He has advanced defensive skills behind the plate and a strong arm capable of 1.95-2.00 second pop times. Holding the bat close to his head and using an aggressive stride, Reetz has a quick, line-drive oriented swing and has hit well in games. His natural strength gives him gap power.
