Kiley McDaniel at Scoutingbaseball.com tweeted that he was hitting 92 mph with his fastball with plus life. For the season, he now has 45 K/11 BB over 24.2 innings, allowing 10 hits. He is the best pitcher for one of the best programs in the country and is a big-game pitcher. Through 55.2 innings, he has 80 K/25 BB and has allowed just two runs on 24 hits. In the next game against James Madison, he went 2-for-4 with two home runs and three RBI in a 13-2 win on March 11. Already a gifted hitter with a great approach from the left side, the 6’-3”, 215 pound junior is showing off the power most thought would come with his size. Through 18 games, he is hitting .338/.470/.600 with five home runs and has drawn 16 walks to 11 strikeouts. He is starting to gain late-first round attention. He has proved no match for Nebraska pitching as he is hitting .588/.734/1.275 over 22 games with 12 doubles, seven home runs and 10 stolen bases. He has also drawn 22 walks and has struck out six times. His versatility makes him intriguing because of all the options he has. As a pitcher, he can hit the low-90s to go with an upper-70s slider. He can play the outfield where his arm would play well, third base where the arm and bat would play well, but catcher may be his best position, and he has all the tools to stick there. He may not be facing the best competition but he has always performed well on the showcase scene and is an alumni of Team USA Baseball. 3-26-14 – TTF – 10 high school players on the rise — third edition – Jeremy Vasquez, OF/1B, Martin County HS (FL) - Vasquez made the list last week, and he makes it again after going 14-for-20 over his last six games with nine doubles and six walks. For the season, he is now hitting a silly .596/.683/.958 over 15 games with 12 doubles, a triple, a home run and 12 walks to just three strikeouts. At 6’-1” and 200 pounds, he generates a ton of power from the left side and has an advanced approach at the plate — rarely missing a pitch. There will be added pressure put on his bat if he is relegated to first base, but the bat is special and the power is legit. One of the youngest players in his class, the upside is even greater. 3-20-14 – Spencer Turnbull, RHP, Alabama - A power arm, the 6’-3”, 220 pound right-hander can touch 98 mph with his fastball and he adds an upper-70s curveball that is inconsistent but has a lot of potential. He also has some minor mechanical issues that need refining, but the Cubs have shown the confidence in selecting players who have a lot of potential but just need some tweaks here and there. Over 29.2 innings this season, he has a 0.31 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 26 K/15 BB, holding opponents to a .141 batting average. He also has allowed just one extra-base hit all season. 3-6-14 – Nats GM -   Charlie White CF University of Maryland -  An intriguing prospect playing his college baseball near Nationals Park, White serves as Maryland’s leadoff hitter and center fielder for the second consecutive year in 2014.  A left-handed batter with excellent contact skills and a knack for reaching base, White lacks home run power which limits his upside professionally.  Defensively, White utilizes his blazing speed, solid baseball instincts, and average arm to be a dynamic center fielder.   Without much physical projection remaining, White will need to maximize his impressive speed, hit, and defensive tools to overcome his lack of power in his attempt to climb through the minor leagues. 3-5-14 – TTF - 10 college players on the rise — week 3  - Max Pentecost, C, Kennesaw State (13) - On Sunday against Jacksonville State, Pentecost showed what a special talent he is and how many ways he can impact a game. He went 0-for-4 but drew two walks, was hit by a pitch twice and added a sacrifice fly in a 17-inning marathon that Jacksonville State won 9-8. He also caught the whole game. Over 14 games, he is hitting .339/.414/.475 with five doubles and a home run. The power still hasn’t shown up as some expected, but he is showing an advanced approach at the plate, athleticism and the defensive abilities to stick behind the plate. 2-27-14 – TTF - 10 college players on the rise - Aaron Nola, RHP, LSU (11) - I am still not sure which stands out more: The fact that Nola didn’t allow a hit over seven innings on Friday, or that he issued a walk. Against Virginia Tech on Friday, he had 8 K/1 BB over those seven no-hit innings and now has 14 K/1 BB over 13 shutout innings for the year. He now has 225 K/26 BB over 228.2 career innings with a 2.28 ERA. The 6’-1” right-hander features a low-90s fastball with heavy sing and a deceptive change-up that freezes hitters. He looked healthy over the summer and a big year from him could make Jesuit a contender with he and one of the top third basemen in the region, Evan Haberle, on the same team. He struck out five to no walks in picking up the win against Appalachian State. His fastball can touch 97 mph and he adds a mid-80s power slider. 1-3-14 – TTF Baseball - 16. Arizona Diamondbacks — Bradley Zimmer, OF, San Francisco - With so much pitching in their system, the D-backs can grab one of the higher upside guys in the 2014 MLB draft. The younger brother of Royals top prospect Kyle Zimmer, Bradley is a 6’-5” right-hander with plus speed and developing power. Over 58 games as a sophomore, he hit .320/.437/.512 with 12 doubles, seven home runs and stole 19 bases. He also shows a great approach at the plate as he drew 29 walks to 31 strikeouts and was hit by a pitch a whopping 16 times, proving he’ll do whatever it takes to get on base. He showed off his wheels for the Collegiate National Team, swiping 11 of 12 bases over 21 games while also hitting an even .300. His speed and plus arm should allow him to remain in center field at the next level.

2-11-14 – PG/Florida HS Dream Team – Best Defensive Outfielder: Carl Chester, Sr. Lake Brantley - Carl Chester is the complete package in center field. Being a plus runner, Chester gets a quick first step on the ball, and is able to cover a vast amount of real estate. He glides easily to the ball with clean fielding actions. Gatewood is headed off to Southern Cal next fall, that is if he doesn’t sign out of high school. His fastball sists in the mid 90s with a lot of life and his slider has plus potential. Posted a 3.18 ERA, 1.37 WHIP with 86 K/35 BB over 79.1 innings as a sophomore. 1-20-14 – Michael Gettys is a 6'2", 195 pound physical specimen. He is a tightly wound, quick twitch athlete with amazing speed and phenomenal arm. If he couldn't hit at all, he would be a top 100 prospect as a pitcher, but I don't see any chance he steps on a mound because of the loud tools as a position player. He has a 92-94 MPH fastball and a very good mid 70's to low 80's breaking ball that both have potential. Alex Verdugo, lhp/of, Sahuaro, Tucson, Ariz./Chi Town Cream - One of the top two-way players in the class, Verdugo had a tremendous showing in Area Codes with the bat and on the mound. He took an impressive batting practice, hit well in games and showed above-average speed. With bat speed, power and a patient approach, Verdugo has feel to hit and good bat control. He was one of the most impressive pitchers of the event with a control of an 89-92 mph fastball that touched 93 with movement. The Arizona State commit commanded his curveball, a plus offering with 12-to-6 tilt and depth at its best. He will vary the shape of the offering depending upon the hitter and mixed in a low-80s changeup. Now, it’s likely Hoffman, who elevated his status at the Cape Cod League by sitting 94-97, and up to 98, with his fastball, which had exploding life. Hoffman also showed a good 80-82 curveball throughout the summer. His junk, K rate, refinement, and mechanics all point to him being a durable 1 or 2 starter. Rodon, a 6-foot-3, 234-pound sophomore, maintains an 18-2 record and a 2.39 ERA as a N.C. State pitcher. His 9-2 record displays the potential of certain Major League aptitude. 9-4-13 – Mack’s Mock Draft v1.0 – 17 –  RHP Michael Cederoth – San Diego State – 6-6 power pitcher that has fell down the list due to all the press this season by the high schooler. Still, he is routinely clocked at 100 with a mid-80’s slider to boot. 109 K/48 BB over 95.1 innings this past season.  He does need to work on his control but don’t be surprised if he doesn’t go higher next June.

7-10-13 - Erick Fedde is a rising Junior from UNLV who plays for the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox. I have seen his past two starts on July 3 and July 9. On July 3, he threw 7.0 innings, allowed 5 earned runs, 8 hits, walked 1 and had 5 strikeouts. On July 9, he pitched 4 innings, allowed 1 earned on 2 hits, 4 walks, and 3 strikeouts. Summation: In both starts, Fedde showed a good arm, and really showed an ability to spin the baseball. What’s most promising for his future is that his changeup showed some potential for enough development to warrant consideration as a starter.
