As the trade deadline approaches no one is sure what to expect from the front office. During the first game of July it appears that the Mets have followed up on their strong June the same way with a come-from-behind effort against the Nationals. Many on the fence about buy or sell are going to have to wait for a philosophical and business decision made on expiring contracts and the hot hitting of Brett Baty in AAA.
What occurred to me just recently watching regular All Star slugger J.D. Martinez is not only how much he has helped the club after his late start, but also how instrumental he has been in seeing a few of the younger hitters all of the sudden step up a level.
We all know how markedly better the should-be All Star catcher Francisco Alvarez has been. Today, however, let’s take a little look more closely at Mark Vientos.
Thus far everyone is focused on what he’s doing now with the bat while at the same time griping about how he plays the field and chomping at the bit to hand the position over to Brett Baty. I’m certainly one who has advocated playing both of them for all of August and September to help decide what you have here with their overall abilities. The question is how and where.
For the most part people have envisioned having Vientos make a diagonal trek across the diamond to man first base assuming the decision is made to peddle away free-agent-to-be Pete Alonso. While that would be a seemingly acceptable solution, Alonso would be leaving massive shoes to fill and Vientos would forever be associated as the cause rather than the effect of the club trading away their all-time best home run hitter. No matter how well Vientos did there if he didn’t hit 40 HRs people would gripe.
Curiosity got the better of me while watching J.D. Martinez in Monday’s game. He is hitting a highly respectable .274 with 9 HRs and 34 RBIs over 208 ABs. That is a pace a little low on power but tracking close to 100 RBIs if he had played a full season. His slugging percentage is .476 and his OBP is .831. Those two numbers are slightly below his career norms, but no one here is complaining that the $12 million man is not worth every penny paid.
Not to be unfair to Pete Alonso, but his 17 HRs and 46 are certainly desirable. Unfortunately his SLG of .474 and his OBP of .808 are good but not even up to the level that the 36 year old Martinez is delivering.
Now comes the surprising part. Mark Vientos is hitting over .300, has 10 HRs and 26 RBIs in 139 ABs with a SLG of .585 and an OPS of .947. Now the batting average is probably the biggest surprise and as the league adjusts to him as a regular player those other metrics may tick down a bit as well.
The funky idea that hit me was perhaps the Mets do their very best to extend hometown hero Pete Alonso, trade away solid hitting J.D. Martinez and instead of Vientos crossing over to 1st base, have him take over the DH duties which would also remove his below average fielding from the game and open up a spot for Brett Baty to play.
All that being said, of course, you still have to figure out what to do with Starling Marte once he recovers. I have a feeling the Mets will be insisting he come back by the end of the third week of July to show for a week he’s healthy enough to play to open up a trade opportunity, though if they keep him as he enters his later 30s and suffering with defense in RF perhaps he is a viable DH candidate as well.

I think if they keep past the trade deadline, then assuming Alonzo is not traded either, I think that Jeff McNeil may find himself sitting a lot, Baty called up, and playing 2B. I think Baty has 5 games at 2nd, so that idea seems plausible.
Right now, Iglesias should play and Jeff should sit. A lot.
Martinez may be a great trade chip but I believe he adds more than just his bat. He is a professional hitter and is helping others hit as well. Wasn't it written that he helped Alonso by offering suggestions? that Vientos and Alverez praised him for helping him as well? Trading him may be more than the loss of his bat.
Offensively, McNeil is the weakest link. Another thought may be promoting Acuna. He seems to have turned the corner but some feel he may need more time in Syracuse. Would he be better defensively at second than Baty? Acuna may not have the power potential of Baty but offers another dimension on the base path. (And Baty didn't display that potential earlier this year).
I agree with Steve on JD. For a few months, I was convinced that trading JD Martinez was a good move. But seeing what he has done to help quite a few of the Mets hitters, I think his value goes far beyond his OPS.
The comments I don't agree with are "bring up Baty to play 2B". Baty was a decent fielder at 3B but lacks the lateral quickness to play second. He would be much less effective than Iglesias who turns two with lightning hands. I love McNeil and hope he turns around his hitting, but he doesn't seem to be able to get on track.
The team is now in a full tilt playoff run
Pete is going nowhere during the season.
The Mets have second base depth in 2025 what with Mauricio returning and the option of Acuña playing there instead of in the outfield
Baty is a one position player who also isn't displaying the kind of power needed to be a DH
Baty is odd man out during this run
It’s only Syracuse, but I think I saw Baty had an OPS of around 1.000 with 7 or 8 homers since his demotion.
This is true but many players have done this at the AAA level to only flop when they go to the dance.
I'm a big fan but he is still odd man out
Indeed this team is now in a playoff hunt, and that’s good. What’s better is Baty can be the “Rick Monday” of the Mets, meaning, that extra starter that you have no room for. But, he isn’t a second baseman. He should be in the outfield more often.
Martinez is worth more than his batting average and slugging percentage and is going nowhere. Alonso is really not even the guy that should be batting cleanup, but rather Alvarez. When the baton is passed, both Wlvarez and Vientos will pass these guys in the lineup and I really don’t know what will happen with Alonso this winter, but watching him everyday, I think 7/$158MM is now off the table.
I'm with Mack on this. The Mets are not going to mess with a line up that continues to win and that is putting up great offensive numbers. Baty will stay in AAA for the foreseeable future, I think, and that's ok. He basically skipped AAA when he made his MLB debut. This will all be figured out in the off season, when Stearns and Cohen decide who stays and who goes and if they can resign Alonso.
Alonso is staying, as Mack said. Too much momentum.
Exciting if all goes as planned and JDM and Bader are healthy, Diaz returns with clean hands and a pure heart, Oca and Fujinami give the pen a velocity boost, and Senga and Scott make this a whole different rotation. That could be a top 5 team, potentially, the rest of the way.
DJ Martinez and Alonso are important to the lineup IF and that is IF the Mets are still contending later on this month.
If that is not the case, the Mets would be negligent by not trading not only Martinez and Alonso but Severino, Manaea and others as well.
Nothing stops the Mets from going after Alonso and if they wish, DJ Martinez during the off-season.
For the life of me, I can't understand why any player that gets traded to a team capable of winning the WS would prefer to stay instead of playing for a possible WS ring and a part of history. That is just me.
These Mets are simply an incomplete team that have multiple talented and deserving players that play the same position.
Having said that, Baty is NOT a 2B and certainly not a better option than Iglesias right now or better than Mauricio, Acuna next year. Let Baty stay in pulgatory for now.
Next year the Mets need to choose if they want to stay about the same or get a lot younger, way faster and more athletic. Cheaper too.
Although I’m in favor of moving McNeil out of the starting
Lineup, add me to the list of those who don’t believe that Baty will ever be a league average (or close) second baseman. He’s not even particularly mobile at 3B. Baty should get another chance to break in next season, but barring an injury, there’s nowhere for him to play right now.
Trading JD would hurt the team in ways well beyond his own contributions. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that so many guys, who looked lost for months, are now taking more non-strikes and hitting balls up the middle and the other way. I think he’s seen as a guru in the clubhouse, and has been a security blanket for a lineup that seemed to always be pressing and lacking confidence.
I’d be fine bringing up Acuña (replacing DJ Stewart or Gamel if/when Marte returns) to split time at 2B with Iglesias, with McNeil on the bench as the utility guy.
Now's the time to trade JDM while his value is high. Need to open up a spot for Baty.
Ray, you make a very good point. JDM’s value will never be greater. But, then forget a playoff appearance because the team will deflate; you might as well trade everybody. While they aren’t a “sustainable winner” yet, don’t forget that fans weren’t buying tickets in the early part: there wasn’t any buy-in from the faithful. But, if you show the fans that they can trust you to want to win, they will buy up all the tickets for the rest of the year and give Stearns leeway going forward instead of looking at him as a small market GM.
I just don’t want to trade anything away that will mess up the Mets future. By the way, Tommy Pham to Atlanta is all the rave. How would you feel about a Braves lineup that is prospering with Kelenic and Pham?
