54% sliders is such a diabolical plan… it just might work
First, let me say this. You are supposed
to win a baseball game if you give up only two runs. Period. All three Mets
starters so far have done their job. The team has won one game. This is unacceptable,
especially to the pitching coach.

The thing I found strange is that he
pitched like a reliever, relying mostly on one pitch. In his case, his slider,
which he threw a whopping 53% of the time.
Basically, two bad pitches and hopefully
he has learned not to pitch to guys like Jose Altuve in future situations
like that.

Canning's mistake was putting that slider in the same place as every other pitch on a 2-2 count to Alvarez. He needs to add some sort of an offering that can find the upper outside part of the strike zone, especially to the lefty hitters.

I agree with that sentiment as well and I am not really picking on him - just putting words down to something I saw at the moment. Overall Canning did a great job. I have been one of the biggest cheerleaders of Canning since they signed him in spite of his >5 ERA last year. I can see a lot more games like that one coming. If he can pitch to a 3.18 ERA all year, I'll be a very happy fan.
And yes, with the pitching they got in Houston, they should have won all three of them. That offense went AWOL. (I still say they should put Nimmo between Lindor and Soto and not in the clean-up slot. Soto, Alonso and Vientos as 3-4-5.
