IN FOCUS - David Peterson, Mets Starters

Pitch Profiler                      @pitchprofiler

David Peterson navigated plenty of hard contact and kept the ball on the ground to deliver five shutout innings for the Mets tonight!

Peterson has become a real Steady Eddie on this staff. Both he and Tylor Megill have proven that if, given time, one can develop into a quality rotation piece in this game. Pitchers like Peterson make it easy to put other pitchers (Sean Manaea) on the 60-day.

Syracuse –

Tuesday night's game between the Syracuse Mets and the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders has been postponed because of inclement weather. The game will be made up as part of a single-admission doubleheader on Wednesday, April 30th beginning at 4:05 p.m. Game two will begin approximately 40 minutes after the conclusion of the first game. Gates will open at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday. As a reminder, fans with tickets on days of doubleheaders can attend both games.

Binghamton –

The Binghamton Rumble Ponies (12-9) fell to the Erie SeaWolves 13-3 on Tuesday night in eight-innings in a rain-shortened series opener at UPMC Park. Erie hit six home runs on the evening, including two from Jake Holton.

Erie (15-7) got on the board in the bottom of the third with a pair of two-run homers from Trei Cruz and Holton off Binghamton starter Jack Wenninger (4-1) to take a 4-0 lead. After Binghamton scored on a passed ball to get on the board in the fourth, Nick Lorusso blasted a two-run homer to left center in the fifth to cut the deficit to 4-3. It was Lorusso’s second home run of the year, and he now has driven in 11 runs this season.

The SeaWolves would respond with nine unanswered runs. In the fifth, Holton hit a three-run home run to left, his second of the night, making it 7-3 Erie. In the seventh, Max Anderson hit a solo shot and Eduardo Valencia hit a two-run homer as part of a five-run frame. Jim Jarvis also hit the first homer of his Double-A career in the sixth. Holton finished 4-for-4 with three runs scored and 5 RBIs.

The game went into a rain delay before the bottom of the eighth inning and was eventually called due to inclement weather.

POSTGAME NOTES: Lorusso, Nick Morabito, and Travis Swaggerty all finished with multi-hit games…Jett Williams reached base twice…The Rumble Ponies had nine hits on the night and the two teams combined for 22 in total…Erie scored 11 of their 13 runs via the home run.

Brooklyn –

In his first game with High-A Brooklyn, 19-year-old SS Marco Vargas provided a walk-off base hit in the 10th to give the Cyclones a 7-6 win over the Wilmington Blue Rocks.

Brooklyn set a new franchise record, stealing nine bases in the game, topping a previous high of eight, which was set in August of 2017.

CF Carson Benge logged a season high four hits in the victory, while LF Eli Serrano III collected 3 RBI. In addition to the nine steals, Brooklyn batters also drew eight free passes on the day.

RHP Noah Hall pitched better than his final line may suggest - 5.0 IP, 4 R (3 ER), while striking out seven and walking one.

The ‘Clones and Blue Rocks return to action on Wednesday at 11:00 AM for the first Education Day game of the season. RHP Joel Diaz (0-0, 0.00 ERA) toes the slab for Brooklyn. He’s expected to be opposed by LHP Jackson Kent (2-2, 1.31 WHIP).

St. Lucie -

The Palm Beach Cardinals defeated the St. Lucie Mets 3-1 on Tuesday night at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium in a battle for first place in the Florida State League East Division.

Colin Houck got the Mets on the board with a RBI single in the sixth inning to make it 2-1. However, Herrera got the next batter Daiverson Gutierrez to hit into an inning-ending double play.

The Mets were held to four total hits - singles from Houck, Jeremy Rodriguez, Nick Roselli and Kevin Villavicencio.

Lanthier took the loss. He pitched 4.0 innings and gave up two runs on two hits. Mets reliever Irving Cota pitched 2.0 shutout innings to lower his season ERA to 0.59.

Reese Kaplan -- The Team Needed That Monday Night Slugfest

After another fine start by Griffin Canning and an unforeseen offensive explosion by Brandon Nimmo and company, the Mets had their first laugher of the year when they trounced the Nationals by a score of 19-5.  Yes, the biggest news of the day was slumping Nimmo’s 9 RBI day, but dig a little deeper and you will see some other tidbits worth exploring.

The first thing that hit me was the continuing rebirth of Mark Vientos.  He had another multi-hit game, drove in runs and looked more like the kind of formidable slugger that fans embraced in the latter part of 2024 up to and including the October post season.  Now Vientos is solidly over the Mendoza line with his batting average and it would appear that an icy first few weeks of April will become a distant frosty memory.

Another aspect of this game that stood out was Jeff McNeil taking his turn at center field.  His experience there is actually far less extensive than that of Luisangel Acuna, but it did give a chance for the two of them to appear in the lineup simultaneously.  Given McNeil being a left handed hitter helps transform him into more of a front runner to get preferred treatment as a Jose Siri replacement.

The good side of this strategy is that it enables Acuna to play nearly every day which was not in the cards had the Mets stuck to an every day center field role assigned exclusively to Tyrone Taylor.

Speaking of Acuna, he too had a multi hit game which now has his batting average at .288 which is pretty impressive after getting on base three times.  What’s even more notable is his 6 stolen bases in 66 ABs.  Extrapolate that output over the course of a full season and you’re looking at over 50 SBs from a guy who can also swing the bat.

The irony is that in this offensive brow beating the Mets gave the Nationals was that the would-be captain Francisco Lindor was the only member of the Mets who left the game without a base hit to his credit.  Then again, after his 0-fer, he still has a .304 batting average so no one was terribly upset he didn’t get to participate in the festivities with the stick.

The one “oops” on David Stearns’ record was his decision to promote non-roster player Jose Urena to take the place of A.J. Minter.  That choice was met with quite a bit of head scratching and the rationale that what Urena had done in the past was more important than the little bit he’d done in Syracuse in the present.  His Mets debut was not exactly what he or Stearns or Carlos Mendoza or Jeremy Hefner had in mind.  Yes, he has a starting pitcher’s arm capable of going multiple innings.

However, during his bruised and bloodied three inning performance Monday night he gave up five runs.  Granted, when you have knocked in 19 runs, it’s OK to swallow this kind of performance and using Urena as a batting practice pitcher enabled the Mets to preserve the wear and tear on the bullpen which has been getting mighty worn of late.

Whether or not Urena is one and done with a reliever being summoned to help replace Minter more appropriately, of whether Jose Butto is skating on thinning ice and he will be the next out the door is still a great unknown.

It was good to have a game with some celebratory efforts from the hitters and the shutout performance by the starting pitcher were both long overdue.

NY Post: Brutal error by Wilmer Flores extends lifeless Mets skid. "Flores’ sixth error of the season sent Jacob deGrom’s night in the wrong direction and helped doom the Mets to their third straight loss, 8-2 to the Nationals at Citi Field. The defeat was the Mets’ first in 11 home games this season...DeGrom (L,2-3) had a second straight shaky outing, lasting just 5¹/₃ innings in which he allowed five runs, three earned, on five hits and two walks with four strikeouts. The right-hander allowed three home runs at Yankee Stadium last Friday and was the losing pitcher...Kevin Plawecki’s RBI double in the second gave the Mets a 1-0 lead before Curtis Granderson delivered a run-scoring single. Flores’ double with one out got the rally started."

The win moved the Nationals 5 games back of the Mets.  Mets still had a 4.5 1st place lead as the Braves lost.  The idle Marlins moved into a tie with the Braves.

Clay Gregory---Not Playing Their Best, Mets Still Finding Ways to Win

I do not think anyone will say that the Mets have played their best baseball as a team during the first month of the season. Whether it be defensive lapses or a baserunning error, the little details with which baseball always seems to humble you, and yet despite not being the best version of themselves, the Mets have found ways to win ballgames, in fact, better than the rest of the league as of this writing as they are the first team to reach the 20-win mark.

Sitting in first place in a tough division called the NL East is no easy task. Doing it while still making mistakes here and there, and always expecting the offense or pitching to have an off night, brings more relevance to the fact that the Mets are finding ways to get the job done more times than not.

I believe it's safe to say that before the season started, you would tell a Mets fan that they would be the first team to reach 19 wins, and that Juan Soto would struggle to open the season, unlike any in his career, would be a bit of a surprise. Sure, we are used to Lindor starting slow, but the track record has proven he will heat up, which he has. As of this writing, he is hitting .312 with five home runs, and April is not over yet.

Soto seems to be in that horrible place between pitches as his timing is either too early or too late and never right in the middle, which is a hitter's nightmare.

As the season goes along, his timing will get better. He will start mashing again as his talent is just too good not to, but what has been odd about his start is that for a player known for his strikezone recognition, which is one of, if not the best, in the game. Yet, he is swinging at pitches out of the zone has just been weird, and to counteract that with his former team and its star Judge hitting the cover off the ball, I am sure, has added some pressure to himself, whether he will admit it or not.

Pitching has been outstanding and has given the team a chance to win almost every game, and aside from the bullpen struggle on Sunday and blowing a 7-1 lead to the Nationals, the bullpen has been lights out as well. In basketball, a star player can single-handedly win you a game. But in baseball, as a win requires a total team effort from the pitching to the hitting, followed by good defense and baserunning, and if all of those are not clicking during a game, you won't achieve the goal of victory.

Have I gotten mad during games, and wondered what these players were thinking when making a miscue? Sure, I have. I also am not talented enough to be doing what they are, and I have to remind myself that each time I get upset. Being upset is human emotion and we are all entitled to it but lets see the positives of our New York Mets are sitting in first place and with a long season ahead it is better to be starting in first place than trying to climb your way out of the cellar no matter how early in the season it is.

We can take the highs and lows and ride the wave called New York Mets baseball, and we can also look forward to our team playing even better baseball in the days ahead and finding a way to give each of us a memory on a nightly basis. When you bleed orange and blue, the tendency has been to wait for the other shoe to drop, and I get that and am guilty of that as well.

But what can be said for this season is that in seasons past, a miscue would put the whole team in a funk and start a seven-game losing streak right out of the blue. Not this team, as they continue to fight even when battling back or surrendering a lead; they do not quit, which is a recipe for a championship team.

So head out to Citi Field and cheer on the Amazin’s and catch them on SNY as they come into your living room, as baseball is a memory making game and there's always something special that can happen on any given night, even if there's some bad along the way. LGM

SAVAGE VIEWS – MANAGER OF THE YEAR 2025

SAVAGE VIEWS – MANAGER OF THE YEAR 2025

With a 20-9 record after 29 games, Carlos Mendoza has to be the overwhelming favorite to claim manager of the year for 2025.

As a matter of fact, I thought he deserved the award last year. It’s a good feeling knowing that he is likely to be around for the foreseeable future. Nevertheless, some of his recent and not so recent decisions confound me.

·       Last Friday the Mets had a one run lead going into the ninth inning. Stanek is brought into the game to close and Acuna takes over for McNeil. Oh, wait a minute, McNeil is left in the game and does not make the play to end the frame.

·       An ongoing issue is the lack of length provided by our starting pitching. Clay Holmes gets pulled after five innings and 70 pitches; Canning is not allowed to pitch the sixth today; Megill gets pulled after giving up his second hit {I don’t count the fly ball Soto did not catch). Mendoza needs to learn that not every pitcher is tired after 100 pitches. Asking the pen to get 12 outs every game is not sustainable. Thirty games into the season and the pen is showing signs of being overused.

·       Bringing Stanek into the game on Sunday in another save opportunity produced predicable results. Diaz is capable of pitching two days in a row.

·       I’m surprised that either Winker or McNeil did not hit for Marte with runners on second and third and one out. As it turns out Marte hit the ball hard and the shortstop made a nice play to record the second out. A better baserunner that Soto would have scored standing up on the play.

·       Nimmo tied a Mets record for most RBI’s in a game. I still don’t like him in the cleanup spot. He is not the clutch hitter you want up when the game is on the line.

·       Vientos is one of my favorite players but I wonder if he would benefit from some time in Syracuse. His early season struggles are a concern.

·       Why the hesitation to give Acuna a shot in CF. Clearly Taylor and Seri are not the answer. Perhaps it’s time to give Drew Gilbert a chance. Let’s find Marte a home and DFA Seri.

·       Hope we never see Jose Urena in a Mets uniform ever again.

I’m thinking that once the M&M boys return in about a month that Canning would be prime trade material. Perhaps to the Orioles.

Tom Brennan: Tom’s Tidbits: Minor League Progress Report. WHO’S HOT? And Nimmo Plates NINE

BEFORE I START ON MY TOPIC DU JOUR:

Jacob Reimer hit THREE homers on Wednesday night.

Teammates Ronald Hernandez went 4 for 4 with 4 RBIs.

And the Mets win 19-5 the other day.

Canning was great. Mets break it wide open.  Nimmo 4 hits, 2 HRs, 9 RBIs.  Now 21 for the season, with 2 games left in April. I thought he was slumping.

Vientos hits a 3 run shot of Amed Rosario(?) in the 9th, his first career homer that was more than a 2 run shot!  He had 6 of his  series RBIs on a misplayed 3 run flare triple on Friday and a 3 run shot off a position player - but all RBIs look the same in the stats, come September.

Lindor was HBP twice - in the same inning - by the same pitcher!  And Juan Urena picks up the save for the Mets despite allowing 5 runs on 7 hits in 3 innings.

All in all, 21 hits, some walks, and a rollicking good time.

So, in the 4 game series, the Mets coughed up two one run 9th inning come from behind losses, and won the other 2 by an 18 run differential.  Ahh, baseball!

Of course, if it was 35 degrees and not 75 degrees, as it was for this game, the Mets probably end up with 2 runs, 3 hits, and 4 frostbites.  Love warm weather.  So do the players, clearly.

WEDNESDAY: METS LOSE 4-3, WITH AN ODD PITCHING CONSORTIUM

Check out the box score. Stanek ain’t no Kranick.

Soto is sputtering.

METS MINOR LEAGUERS - WHO'S HOT

Well, I’ll first start by listing an unnamed Mets minor leaguer who is NOT hot.

He has been around for several years now, has fanned a lot in his career, and this year, through Saturday in AA, is 2 for 22 with 17 Ks.

In spring training, he was 0-10 with 6 Ks.

Total that, and you get 2-32, with 23 Ks.

Worst stat line ever?

Hall of Famer Joe Sewell on the other hand fanned 24 times - total - in his 6 lowest strikeout SEASONS, combined.

And this Mets unnamed suspect with the gaping bat hole is not released to bump someone else more deserving up the chain because?? Head scratcher.

OK, back to the positive side…who’s hot in the Mets minors?

About 25 pitchers. Maybe 50, I ran out of fingers and toes.

Incredible. None named Sproat.

Head scratcher, huh?

So far, there is a guy whose AAA career stats look like this:

47 innings, 52 hits, 37 runs, 21 walks, just 34 Ks, 7.04 ERA, 1.54 WHIP.

His name is not Mike Vasil.  Those stats belong to Brandon Sproat.

Ex-Mets failed prospect Mike Vasil had a 5.78 ERA and 1.52 WHIP in AAA.

Bad numbers, but better than those of Sproat.

(BTW, Mike Vasil, much to my surprise, is pitching for the lowly Chicago White Sox in the big leagues. Through Thursday, he had 15.1 IP, 1.17 ERA, 1.04 WHIP.  Go figure, huh?  Maybe all that Brett Baty needs to do to hit 30 big league HRs is be traded to the White Sox.)

Back to Sproat. He is disappointing right now.

In fact, if I had to call up a prospect emergency starter to the Mets right now, I'd go with Blade Tidwell, with alternatives of Nolan McLean or Jack Wenninger or Joander Suarez.   My 4th choice would be Brandon Sproat.  What???

Let's go, Brandon. You're better than this.

However, let’s get to RED HOT NEWS…

How about…Raimon Gomez

Saw this thrilling missive on the Mets’ site:

“There are plenty of things that can exceed 104 mph. Cars, trains, airplanes, even wind. A pitch, however, generally isn't one of those -- unless you're Raimon Gomez.

“The Mets right-hander came out blazing in the first inning, reaching triple digits with his heater on 11 of 12 pitches for St. Lucie. Discounting the 86.9 mph slider he threw to end the frame, the slowest offering from Gomez was a 100.2 mph fastball that missed the strike zone.”

His fastest pitch? An insane 104.5 on the FM dial. Insane. Love it.

(He fanned 4 in 2 scoreless innings, and has a 0.00 ERA in 7.2 IP).

Other arms?

In AAA, Blade Tidwell has an ERA of 5.00, but a ripping 37 Ks in 27 IP.

In AA, McLean, Wenninger, Suarez are just a few studs.

Wenninger especially has been masterful. 4-0, 0.90, 0.80 WHIP, 32 Ks in 20 innings.

Runner-up is Jo Jo Suarez - 14 scoreless, 0.43 WHIP.

And Felipe de la Cruz and Doug Orellana have combined to fan 34 in 20 innings, with just 4 ER allowed. Dynamos.

And of course, one must not forget Jonah Tong, with his 30 punch outs in 17 innings.

In High A:

Zach Thornton? One earned run in 21 IP, 3-0, 25 Ks. What?

Chandler Marsh? 0.00, 3 baserunners in 10.2 IP, And 14 Ks. Sick.

Joel Diaz? 16 IP. 0.00, with an 0.70 WHIP. Jeesh.

Ryan Lambert? Sizzling with 8 IP, 3 hit, one run, 17 K ball. Scorching.

Anthony Nunez? 8.2 hitless innings, with 15 Ks! Mind-blowing.

Dylan Ross? 8 IP, 2 hits, 2 runs, 15 Ks. Ross is the Boss.

And, with less innings, Al Vega, Saul Garcia, Eduardo Herrera, and Ryan Amons have nonetheless combined for a sick 19 innings, 3 hits, 0 runs, 24 Ks.  DUDES!

A few guys like Jonathan Santucci, on the other hand, are struggling so far.

But Brooklyn pitchers have fanned 227 in 172 IP. Bringing it!!

In low A:

More sizzlers.

Chris Gomez has given up some runs, but fanned 17 in 9 IP.insane.

Will Watson has been great so far.

Frank Elissalt superb so far.

Hunter Hodges and Hoss (Cartwright) Brewer, too.

Matt Allan? Glad to say he’s very solid, at 10 innings, 7 hits, 3 runs, 12 Ks.

Nate Dohm? .2.84 ERA, 24 Ks in 19 IP.

Lots of scuffling pitchers in St Lucie too, however. Won’t list those.

So, I listed 24 hot pitchers. Should have been 25, Brandon Sproat.

Hitters?

AAA - is a veteran’s haven, a veritable old age home, so let’s mostly skip that team.

Wait, there is Drew Gilbert, who was hot prior to Sunday. As his team scored 26 runs in two 7 inning games Sunday, Drew missed the party, going 0 for 8. Dropping him to .250.

AA - hot is just and only Jett Williams, at .290/.353/.516.

He is hitting 170 points higher than his fellow 2022 first round pick Kevin Parada, who is hitting a buck twenty with 20 Ks in 50 ABs.  In 10 of his 15 games, hitless.

Parada is starting to remind me of what Will Smith said in movie in “I Am Legend” about the mutants…

”Devolution is complete.”

High A - a few hitters.

Estarling Mercado in 12 games is .405./.480/.595.

Jacob Reimer is .303/.369/.566 with 16 RBIs, very solid.

Chris Suero has slipped to .250 with 24 Ks in 17 games, but has 5 jolts so far.

D’Andre Smith a very solid .302/.415/.465 in 14 games.

LF Kevin Villavicencio has played low A and High A already, and is simply raking at .409.

Low A?

Messrs. Vargas, Ewing and Mercado are hitting .409, .400, and .394, respectively. Dandy. Ty Cobb is digging those 3. So am I.

And Mack’s favorite Trace Willhoite has 17 RBIs in 16 games and 52 ABs, despite a .231 average and a golden sombrero in one game. Love those RBIs.

So, thatis my hot prospect recap, and I am sticking to it.

P.S.

Aside from sizzling prospects, the Mets’ Jesse Winker on Friday lined out to Nathaniel Lowe to start a triple play.

Except Jesse really didn’t line out.

You see, 1B Nathaniel Lowe caught the liner on a short hop. Not reviewable, however, because the ball had not left the infield. Baseball has so many rules.

That one?

Stupid rule.

Lowe was later asked if he’d ever been involved in another triple play.
