As the calendar moves forward towards July, it would seem that the Mets most certainly will be buyers this year instead of sellers. We’ve seen some of the latter behavior and its long term implications (Pete Crow-Armstrong, anyone?)
At current glance the Mets are in first place without much offense other than from injured Francisco Lindor, free agent to be Pete Alonso and near billionaire Juan Soto. Unfortunately the rest of the offense has been somewhat lackluster.
The second base position has been in a rotation most of the season with innings provided by Jeff McNeil, Luisangel Acuna and Brett Baty among the would be regulars. None have performed at a stellar level and there are more infielders behind them still in the minors.
Third base has been another guessing game. Now injured Mark Vientos has been a shell of his 2024 self with limited power, poor batting average and questionable defense. Brett Baty stuck around longer than anyone expected and with a solid month of May it appeared he’d finally made the jump into the majors but lately he’s been tempered a bit as well. Ronny Mauricio was brought up to substitute for Vientos and he’s not looked like the red-hot hitter he was in AAA.
The outfield has been pretty much a disaster. Between some physical ailments and a very slow start Brandon Nimmo is starting to come to life but his batting average still just .232 with 9 HRs and 31 RBIs. The run production may indeed finish up where you’d expect it but in the past Nimmo was an on-base machine and he owns a career major league batting average of .260 even including 2024’s meager .224.
Center field has been a whirlwind of good defense but marginal contribution at the plate. Jeff McNeil, Tyrone Taylor, still injured Jose Siri, Luisangel Acuna, Jose Azocar and others have floated in and out of that key position, but no one has established a stronghold with the bat. Taylor and Siri showed off tremendous defense, but pennant aspiring teams don’t usually hand the starting assignment to guys hitting below .200 or in Taylor’s case .238.
People have been upset with the potential not being shown by Juan Soto, but in the past week or two he seems to have found his stroke after a slow two months to begin his Mets career. Given his paycheck and his track history he’s a given to play RF until his manager eventually decides he would be more valuable as a DH.
Catcher has been another mystery for the team. We all know the struggles Francisco Alvarez has had on both sides of his game. His revamped swing isn’t working and his defense is not what it once was. Luis Torrens is hitting .250 which is actually better than Alvarez, but his career mark is .229, so he’s not likely a starting caliber player there either.
In the starting rotation the club is solid with the five they have now despite some recent bad outings by Trevor Megill and a few OK but not great ones from David Peterson. Paul Blackburn was remarkable in his first start but people are still unsure how much to bank on him given his lackluster track record. Behind them are Frankie Montas and Sean Manaea. The point is that the Mets indeed have sufficient quantity and quality in their starting rotation, so much in fact that you might see a pitcher traded away at the July deadline.
Now the bullpen is odd. We know how well Edwin Diaz has done and until recently Reed Garrett and Huascar Brazoban were unhittable. There have been others in and out of the pen with the most recent sacrifice to Syracuse being option-available Max Kranick who was only sporting a 3.51 ERA. No one is sure how well some of the others will do and lefty reliability remains a question mark.
Between now and the end of July David Stearns needs to decide how to juggle the roster to provide more offense, more bullpen weapons and who he might be willing to sacrifice at the major league and minor league levels to obtain reinforcements.

Max was excellent in relief in AAA last night. He is a victim of a too-good pitching staff. And Montas and Manaea will be back in under a month.
Do the Mets trade AWAY pitching at the deadline to upgrade hitting? My brother wants more real hitters beyond the top 6 (Lindor, Alonso, Soto, Nimmo, Marte, McNeil). Keep in mind that Winker will likely be back in a month, but if you want to win a World Series, replacing one or some of the .230 hitters with a lethal bat would be something to really consider.
Currently there are a myriad amount of offensive issues on this team, starting with RISP.
Yet, they have one of the top five records in baseball
I believe the current talent will easily get this team to the playoffs
Returning starters will only give the team more options on the mound
But it will take an uptick by the currently powder puff Mets (A.K.A. Baby Mets) to win the whole enchilada
Right now those Baby Mets are more capable of strained peas than enchiladas. It was good to see Mauricio finally get a hit but as he plays more out of necessity, you have to wonder about some of the others like Baty, Acuna, Nimmo, the catchers and the center fielders who all are not showing a whole lot with the bat.
It only goes to show how important the potential all-stars on this team are currently responsible for just about everything being done with a bat here
They need a veteran bat to DH and drive in runs.
Hoping this is Mauricio
Mack, I believe Mauricio will come around. He needs to make adjustments. I.e., he falls behind early in counts (by taking too many early strikes) and then swings at sliders and splitters outside the zone. Ronny Mo has been known to be a free-swinger. But he is going to have to show more discipline up here. We all need to have patience. This is still spring training for him. Remember, his first games in A and AA ball, he also looked horrendous at the plate. But something clicked in AAA for him. It is likely to happen again. It may take a few weeks. But once he finds his groove, I believe we can expect Ronny Mo to drive multiply batted balls over 100 mph per game!
Oh, BTW Mack, Ronny is showing pretty good "D" so far. I think you were a little tough on him regarding his fielding ("uses his glove as a fly-swatter"). IMHO, Mauricio possesses a pretty good glove at all 3 infield positions! Interestingly, Mendy chose Roony Mo over Luisangel to play SS in place of Lindor last night!

I don't think the trade route is the way to go for improved hitting with RISP. Sometimes it is just bad luck, sometimes it requires some coaching on the approach to hitting with RISP. Are you going to trade a former batting champ for someone else and think they will hit better? Leave McNeil where he is and by the end of summer he will have a much better average with RISP. Taylor's defense in center field is worth the up-and-down batting. Who are you going to trade for him? Harrison Bader?
As long as they win, we can thrive with Taylor (i.e., his bat) starting in CF. However, if 5-9 in the lineup continue to leave runners on base as prolific as Winker's locks, then another solution must be considered. Maybe, when Winker returns, they should send Acuna down to AAA and play him daily in CF (not that he's been hitting a ton, either). But McNeil is always a possibility (at least until the 6th or 7th inning). But the 3 main starting OFers overall BA is among the worst in MLB at present (we all know that Soto will hit). But has Nimmo shown signs that he is more than a .240 hitter over the past 200 or so games?
Moreover, regarding Nimmo, he is not working counts as well as he has in the past resulting in a paucity of BBs.
I want to throw up every time I see PCA raking at the plate in a Cubbie uniform! Can you imagine if he were patrolling CF for us?
He read me and stepped up his game 🎮
I'm telling ya
The Baby Mets have the solution here
Now, now...
Thank you, Mack for motivating Ronny Mo to field better!! I think there might be a place for you on the Mets as team psychologist. Why don't you give David Stearns a call!!!? And maybe now that you helped Maurico to field better, you can motivate him to hit better!!
Get Suarez from Dbacks to bat 5
Suarez is a good fit
