Morning Thoughts
What I think of Wednesday’s trades.
First all, no one can predict the
future. If they could both Mike Piazza and Aaron Judge would have gone 1.1 in
their draft.
And no one can predict where players who
are labeled “rentals” will wind up in their next season. Mets fans balked when
the team traded their top two shortstop prospects for a rental at that position.
Turns out the Mets resigned him in the off-season. That was Francisco Lindor. How did that work
out?
This analysis is only based on talent
vs. talent, for this season only.
A side bar. I started as a Mets writer
when I was a syndicated sportswriter paid to cover the Savannah Sand Gnats. I quickly
learned that I didn’t get my best info from showing up fifteen minutes before
the game started and watching it from the press box. Instead, I would show up
3-4 hours before the game to hang out with the players, their families, and,
eventually, the scouts who I sat with behind the plate.
Early on, I made the mistake of getting
too close to some players and their families. I now know that altered my opinions
of these players. I actually cared about them.
What I didn’t realize that this was a
job only situation and I needed to stop letting my emotions affect my writing.
Anyway…
Trade 1:
Mets trade OF Drew Gilbert, RP Jose Butto, and SP Blade Tidwell to San Francisco. Mets receive
back RP Tylor Rogers.
Again, you must first ask yourself what
you want from this team THIS year. I don’t know about you, but I have written
about a team that has not brought home the trophy since 1986. That’s 39 years.
39 years. I’m getting pretty tired of analyzing trades for a player’s future
value.
-Very few members of the 2025 are playing
consistent, positive baseball. There’s Edwin Diaz, David Peterson, and Reed Garrett on the mound and… and…
hell, the best BA on this team is Starlin Marte.
-It’s a team of slumps, injuries, disappointing
youngsters, and current stars producing like rookie level minor leaguers.
-Every game seems like this team is
sliding down a razor blade.
-The addition of Rogers to a pen that includes
Diaz, Garrett, Gregory Soto, and the back from the IL, Brooks Raley totally remakes this
pen into one of the best in the National League.
-Nobody traded was a top prospect. Gilbert
should have been by now, but 12-HR and .246-BA is nothing to write home about.

Drew Gilbert (acquired by SFG) is a left handed
hitting OF that has been seemingly average at the dish in AAA this season
He won’t blow anyone away with exit velocities, but he remains productive thanks to his pull tendencies and stinginess at the plate
-Butto showed promise earlier this year,
but is coming off a disappointing 5-ER in 1.2-IP in his last outing
-And an old favorite of mine, Tidwell, has
a 9.00-ERA for the Mets and 4.10 for Syracuse. Not McLean or Tong numbers.
Thomas
Nestico @TJStats
Blade Tidwell (acquired by SFG) is a volatile
pitching prospect that has flashed impressive strikeout stuff but has struggled
to find the command to be consistent
His deep
arsenal buoys his floor and gives the Giants plenty of tools to help Tidwell
reach his ceiling
-None of the top prospects, at the same positions, were traded here.
-As of Rogers, this is one of the most talented, most successful, and most consistent pitchers you are going to see for this team. You’ll love his funky delivery and release. Just don’t look for high K/9 numbers here. He generates more groundballs than most pitchers in the game.
Thomas
Nestico @TJStats
Tyler Rogers (acquired by NYM) is a submarining
reliever that has been utterly dominant throughout his career
Perhaps
the most unique pitcher in baseball, Rogers won’t beat you with speed, but he
will with his one-of-a-kind delivery. This is a huge boost to the Mets bullpen!

The Mets get another demon, and this one
throws FUNKY
Daniel Wexler @WexlerRules
-The Gilbert and Tidwell departure creates
an opening in Syracuse for both Carsen Benge and Jonah Tong. We’ll see.
So…
If you want to win the World Series this
year, this is a great deal.
If the Mets resign the 28-yr old for around 4-5 years, it is an absolutely great deal.
Remember the flack they got
when they trade their two top shortstop prospects for a rental of Francisco Lindor.
Me?
Rating: A+
Trade #2
Mets trade RHP Nate Dohm, RHP Frank Elissalt, and 3B Jesus Baez to St. Louis for RHRP Ryan Helsley.
Dohm and Elissalt are two two mid-level
starter prospects that simply have no path to a future Mets rotation.
Baez, in my opinion, is a real deal prospect with a bright future in this game. The concern of his loss will fade if one of the current three Mets third baseman work out (Baty, Vientos, Mauricio). If not, you will hear ad nauseam about this guy
(I show Brooklyn having only two
productive starters now… Brandon Girton and Noah Hall. Look for promotions from
St. Lucie post haste with guys like Will Watson and Ethan Lanthier. As for Baez’s
replacement, probably Kevin Villaviceio.)
Helsley is one of the top closers in the
game and is at the prime of his career. In addition, perfect insurance is if
signs up with the Mets in the future and Diaz doesn’t. Lastly, simply put, the
Mets now have the best bullpen in the game.

DAVID STEARNS OWNS THIS TRADE DEADLINE
Hours
after acquiring late-inning weapon Tyler
Rogers, the Mets acquire
the flamethrowing Ryan Helsley!
How’s that for progress?
Again, I analyze this on this season,
not the future. With that…

In closing, David Stearns decided this week to
improve this team for a stronger chance to win this year’s World Series. The
majority of players traded away were pitchers, the area where there is the most
prospect depth. The future of starters seems cemented with the likes of Nolan McLean, Jonah Tong, Christian Scott, Brandon Sproat, and Jack Wenninger. None of them were
traded away. In fact, none of the top five Mets prospects were traded away.
I just see no downside here.

The only downside I see is I hate trading away prospect pitchers like Dohm, because as 2025 proves, pitchers are highly breakable. I think with these three new hurlers, the Mets will be closing in on 40 pitchers used - with 2 months left.
But I awesomely like that Stearns avoided trading Sproat, McLean, Tong, Benge, Ross, and Williams, all of whom are at least quasi-ready for Queens, and Santucci and Lambert. That is a core nucleus for 2026’s transformation.
And yes, it is time to win a WS. WAY past time. The pen has been shored up, and Blackburn’s and Megill are likely August pieces. Let’s roll.
I do keep forgetting about Christian Scott. Him, too.
And Thornton and Wenninger get, lest I forget. Lots of arms. Maybe 2026 won’t see us lose more than a collective man-year in the first 100 games, as they did with Manaea, Montas, and Megill (and other starters), so we won’t need 50 pitchers in 2026.
I too hate trading starters but the Mets have drafted deep at this position in the last three drafts and thus amount lost is IMO expendable
I'm told so does he sometimes
I just wish the current rotation will stay healthy and average six innings a start
Let’s not forget Matt Allan. Of course, I still hope to see Jenrry Mejia again.
It is timefor our starters to take Extendze. Lengthen out, so to speak.
Rumor has it that the Mets are building a new wing in the training facility just for Matt Allen and Calvin Zeigler
Length is good or so I'm told
I think Santucci and Lambert might be ready to contribute in 2026 as well. With the money coming off the books we should be able to keep 1-2 of the RP we acquired.
It's gotten a lot tougher to be promoted to this pen in the.last 48 hours
I like the moves, but moving McNeil to 2B drastically lowers the opps for Baty and Mauricio, who need the playing time to show if they're keepers.
Additionally, we now have 2 players splitting RH DH time, neither of whom are currently available to play any position more than occasionally. Vientos has been heating up, and Marte has the highest BA on the team, so it will be interesting to see which of them gets playing time.
Time will tell, but overall it looks like a great deadline week for Stearns.
I know that Zeigler will be out of action for an extended time, but what's up with Allan? I haven't seen him in any box scores lately, so I fear that he's injured again. What's his latest status?
Mack,
One area to consider when looking at prospects traded is would those prospects who had to be placed on the 40 man roster for the 2025 Rule 5 draft been placed on that roster or would they have been in fact lost in the draft.
I actually liked the trades for the pitchers. Not a big fan of the Mullins move. I came around to getting him, that's not the problem. Did we actually have to give up 3 prospects for him. I think we were probably his only suitor. Severe overpay.
I think we actually overpaid for everyone. I know you have to give to get bet look at the Bedard trade. The Yanks gave 3 middling prospects, and he still has a year of eligibility. They got Dorval for pretty much nothing.
The pitchers really make us a formidable pen, but I feel we overpay for every move we make.
Allan was REALLY baby sat... one inning starts. Then shut down again without explanation
No word since maybe out of embarrassment
The usage of McNeil is worth watching
This is true
Your opinion is as valuable as mine
Strange situation indeed. Thanks, Mack.
Mack
If it is all about this year your right.
But we are not on our way to win 100 games pace.
We may not win the division as you could argue the Phillies won the trade deadline with the higher quality players
If you took everything you traded for Roger’s and helsey and traded that haul for mason miller or J Duran both who have more control and probably are the better player wouldn’t that have been better
With that said if it’s all about 2025 then the lineup should have been boosted for a all out run
Trade for Suarez, or Naylor or make Cleveland a offer they can’t refuse for the guy I want in Ramirez
But I will admit this was a attempt (just not my style of an attempt) at all in
Eddie
Winning the division means nothing
Winning four games in the World Series is everything
Oh and I can’t help myself
But the Lindor trade was not a success
While the deal itself was fair it was for a rental and those first 2 years were not worth It.
Lindor failed year 1
Year 2 Lindor cost us our generational talent in PCA to have his best friend on the team and they sparked the thumbs down movement
While he has grown up and matured and become the leader of the team,
He demanded 341 million dollars for his serves
We could have just signed him in the off season and saved about 60 million on that contract had he done what he delivered that first year
Sorry to bring the negativity but Lindor is not Piazza
He will be the best SS in franchise history and will have his number retired
But he is also not been great through the years
That’s a winning argument
Wow
Lindor was not a successful sign
He was a great sign and a remarkable re-sign that easily could turn out to be the top Mets SS ever
One more thing Eddie
You may want to start off comments like this one with "in my opinion ".
Opinion pieces allow writers to lack objectivity
That’s true thank you for the advice
I'm with you on this Eddie. I finally put aside my Lindor venom and started to appreciate him and right now he is awful. Our best hitters can't disappear for 6 weeks at a time.
Let's just say I never forgot that Baez crap, but I figured he matured. He has become a positive influence and a team leader, and I have come to appreciate him.
But to me he is a good signing, not great. He's hitting .246. Too many month long slides. Great players don't do that.
The only point to me about Lindor is this
I pay for greatness
And greatness to me begins at the plate
Being a great SS (which Lindor has never made be debate a Lindor VS Ordonez defensively ) is not worth 341 million
Seager receives less and he delivered that championship and has been a 2 Time WS MVP
Was last year Lindor showing his greatness or was it outlier year
This year is not a great year
Now his leadership currently is in no debate
So to me, saying he is a great trade when gimenez turned in more allstar appearances in the same time
(Not that I think gimenez is better but if we reallocate the money difference what would the line up be?) Corey and gimenez vs Lindor dare I say?
Okay
Based on what you Lindor haters are saying, you neednto hate both Soto and Alonso just as much for their lack of July dominance.
Of course the Big Prize means a lot moren but winning the Division is far from "nothing".
At the very least, the Divisiion winner gets to rest, practice and prepare for Round One, while their opponent is playing a tough, pressurized series just to get to that round.
Plus, that gap in games meanns they can set their rotation up instead of having it dictated by the needs of the previous series.
I don't think we actually said we hate Lindor. We just said he was good, not great.
Soto, for me is another story in itself. Again, I don't hate him, just never wanted him. Will root for him because he is a Met.
Now Pete is different. He's a home grown Met. He's a big lumbering slugger with his deficiencies on full display. At least he cares, has pride in being a Met.
Personally, I would listen to offers for Lindor. IMO, I would move on from Alonso, Lindor and Nimmo.
Get rid of Soto too, and start from scratch
You guys
