MACK - POSITION ANALYSIS - 2B

 

Position Analysis – 2B

 

We continue with a look at the “other” middle infield positions, second base.

Going forward, I changed the color coding of the players to reflect where I consider them as RED, BLUE, or BLACK filler players.

 

Jett Williams – Williams is one of the big deal prospects on this team. I can’t see him being part of any trade (I also put Nolan McLean, Jonah Tong, and Carson Benge in this category) and, though he can hold his own in center, I believe he fits better as the eventual 2026 second baseman. That is, if Francisco Lindor remains standing, otherwise Jett would fly over and fill in at short. Williams needs very little refinement right now. All he needs is more reps at this position, which is where I hope the Mets play him exclusively in next year’s Spring Training games.

 

Jared Young – The soon-to-be 31/year old screams of a future in baseball as an AAAA player. He did have a cup of coffee in Queens last season (43-AB, .186), but, if he remains a Met going forward, Syracuse seems to be his home next season alongside of Williams and batting .300 there in 2025 shows he does have value. He can play first, which adds to his value as an emergency call-up. It’s hard for me to believe he won’t become a free agent and attempt to find a starting gig somewhere else, but we’ll see.

 

Wyatt Young – will play 2026 as a 26/year old. Also plays short and third. Brennan’s illegitimate son. Spent the entire 2025 season with AA-Binghamton and hit .244 with only one home run. I shake my head when I think of the way velo-nuts Tom throws rose pedals down before Young walks on the field. Currently frozen out at the AAA level, unless he shifts to short. In my book, a non-entity.

 

D’Andre Smith – you don’t send a minor league player to the AFL unless you see a future for that person. Such is the case of Smith. The 5thn round pick in the 2022 draft hasn’t turned too many heads yet, but he did hit .279 (353-PA, 7-HR) for AA-Binghamton last season. No, he is not tearing it up in the desert, but it seems obvious. To me, the heir apparent to Syracuse’s second base once Williams say buh-bye.

 

Jefrey De Los Santos – will turn 23 in May. Also, can play SS and RF. Had a horrible year in Brooklyn last season (195-PA, 19-RBI, .194), which for some reason earned him a late season promotion to AA-Binghamton (44-PA, .244). I have two problems here. One, I don’t see much of a future for JDLS as a Met, and I’ve read that the first sign of dementia is confusing your De La Santos’. He will play AA-Binghamton in 2026 and compete against the next dud I write about here.

 

Marco Vargas – turns 21 in May. Also, plays third and short. Boy, everybody thought the Mets stole this guy as a throw-in in a 2023 trade with the Marlins. I mean, he was hitting .283 as an 18-yr old in their rookie team. So far, as a Met, it just hasn’t happened, though he did start last year on first for A-St. Lucie (55-PA, .409), but then went poof for A+ Brooklyn (408-PA, .239). No power. He’s play AA-Binghamton this season, if for no other reason because of the 408-PAs.

 

Nick Roselli – turns 23 in March. Also, plays LF and RF. SUNY boy. Frankly, that’s all the good there is here. Hit a combined .193 for A-St. Lucie/A+ Brooklyn last season. Will return to the borough of Kings until something better comes around.

 

Trey Snyder – will play 2026 as a 20/yr. old. Also plays third and short. I said Roselli would play Brooklyn until someone better comes around. Snyder doesn’t look like it will be that guy, Oh, the 512-PA for Rk-St. Lucie will push him there, but he only hit .220. Looks like another future AAAA player.

 

Mitch Voit – will play 2026 as a 21/yr. old. Also, plays third and first. 38^th overall pick in 2025 draft. So far, might as well have been the 380^th pick. 99-PA, .235 in Rk-St. Lucie last season. Will repeat there, looking for lightning to strike

 

Vladi Gomez – will play 2026 as a 20/yr. old. Also plays CF and SS. Came stateside last season and started for the FCL Mets. 152-PA, 8-RBI, .172. And you didn’t think it would get worse. I have him repeating there next season unless the Mets draft someone else.

 

Yorber Semprun – signed for a $100K IFA signing bonus in the 2025 signing period. Just turned 18. Also plays short and third. Played DLS ball in 2025 (17-yrs. old): 158-PA, 23-K, 17-BB, 1-HR, 20-RBI, .307. Nice start. Normally, I would keep a kid this young with these few bats on the island for another season, but the opening is there on second for the FCL team and why not get him over here to train with the rest of the players at the rookie level? Hell, if you draft a stud second baseman, you can always send him back. He’s not age dying. ETA: around 2080.

 

MACK – Another basically thin position, with only one RED prospect and two BLUE ones. Obviously, this position in the future belongs to Jett and, frankly, if that didn’t work, the team would have to reach outside the organization for a starter. My rating is based on Williams being there.
