Frankly, it was very
interesting to see the Mets insert both Rafael Montero and Jake deGrom into relief roles on Thursday. No, these were
not ‘start of the inning stints’ in spring training. They were ‘get up, warm,
up, and go in and save your fellow Met pitcher’s ass’ outings.
Montero was one pitch.
DeGrom took longer, but both turned out to have varied degrees of success. Is
this their future on the team?
Everybody seems to have
handed the SP5 spot to Dice-K, leaving Jenrry Mejia to join the 2014 pen out of camp. That would
give the Mets two pitchers (Carlos Torres) that could be stretched out if injuries were to occur during
the season to one or more of the starters.
Noah Syndergaard, Darin Gorski, and Mark Cahoon look to be a lock for the
Vegas rotation. Montero and deGrom could fill it out, but what do you do with Cory Mazzoni and Logan Verret?
My guess, at this point,
is both will go to Vegas as starters, but only Montero could have a future in
the Mets rotation. My hopes are the Mets move the Colon contract out by the
all-star break, DFA Dice, and bring up both Thor and Montero… but, we’ll see.
Prospect Watch –
Prospect watch - Starting pitcher Noah
Syndergaard continues to impress pretty much everyone. He’s got
lights-out velocity and excellent control, and his apparent ability to take
things in stride bodes well for his transition to the major leagues. He’ll
almost certainly join the roster in 2014 at some point.
Though he’s still very early in his minor league career,
first baseman Dominic Smith is an exciting
prospect. He’s got a smooth swing and natural power, and he’s an excellent
fielder as well. He seems like he could be a Will Clark type of player, only with
a mellower disposition.
Starting pitcher Rafael Montero is
a candidate to make the 2014 roster. He’s got a diverse arsenal and good

Eno Sarris: People are practically begging the Mets to trade
for him, and I think he could maybe fake it at short for a few season even if
he isn’t as shortstop, but if it costs Rafael Montero,
I’m out.

Black is a decent fallback, I like him. They gave him a save last year too.

Mack Michael Chavis is looking like a very interesting player. Do you know if he is fast enough to play OF? And where is he projected in the draft?
Chavez runs a sub 6.7 60.
He originally was projected to be a LFer but now shows the ability to make the adjustment to SS.

Between yesterday and today, we saw Dice-K, Thor, and Wheeler. Of the 3, the Dice-man had the best combo of Run, Hits, Walks, Ks. But he was the one you gave the negative review.
The only run he gave up was on a 2B, SB and Ground Out. And only a misplay in the field kept him from finishing his 4th IP.

No, I just don't like the direction the team is going and I just believe he has the ability to give up 5-6 run in one inning every outing he throws.
I want that slot to go to Mejia first, then, if that doesn't work, Montero.
I like having Colon vet presence in the rotation... and I will like having Valverde and Lannon in the pen... but then, I am done with old guys
I also agree on dice k. Mack I think they will be able to stretch Lannin out for long relief as well. If Mejia doesn't start up here I hope they send him down to AAA to start there.
having Lannan, Mejia, and Torres in your pen give you multiple "stretching" options...
While I still think Mejia will ultimately be very effective back-end reliever, right now regular work is best for him (remember that is what Mariano was doing at 25). The question is: In MLB or AAA?
I usually cringe at the "Quality Start" metric, but that is what it really comes down to for the April roster: who is more likely to give consistently provide QS's, JM or Dice-K? If THAT's a push, then the best case scenario for the Mets is an effective (enough) Dice-K for a midseason trade (vs. an April DFA). If JM is clearly the most likely QS engine, obviously he should be SP#5.
Iam wondering if Danny Santana makes the same progress than Segura of the Brewers did. They has similar Minors numbers. He would give the Mets speed and defense. Plus he probabl wouldnt cost as much as Franklin or Owings do
