Kevin Plawecki threw out three attempted base stealers and chipped in with an RBI double to lead the Binghamton Mets to a 2-1 victory over the Harrisburg Senators on Sunday afternoon at NYSEG Stadium. Tyler Pill struck out a season-high seven over 5-2/3 shutout innings to secure Binghamton’s fifth series win of the season.
Binghamton cracked the scoreboard in the third against Harrisburg starter AJ Cole. Kyle Johnson started the rally by pulling a double into the left-field corner. Plawecki extended his hitting streak to eight games and gave the B-Mets a 1-0 lead by banging a double off the right-field wall.
Pill, searching for his first win of the season, preserved the lead for three more innings. After opening his sixth start of the season with two scoreless frames, the righty used a pair of strikeouts to work around a one-out single in the third. Plawecki erased Cutter Dykstra’s single in the fourth by throwing him out at second on an attempted steal.
Pill posted a perfect fifth before running into trouble in the sixth. Pinch-hitter Qunicy Latimore opened the frame with a single, but was nabbed by Plawecki when he tried to steal second while Michael Taylor struck out. Pill’s day came to a close after hitting Caleb Ramsey with a 1-2 pitch.
TJ Chism took over with two outs to face Dykstra, but never needed to retire the Harrisburg infielder. On his third pitch, Ramsey was thrown out by Plawecki while trying to swipe second, ending the inning.
Binghamton doubled their lead in the sixth against reliever James Simmons. Dustin Lawley dumped a double inside the right-field line and took third on a single by Cory Vaughn. Darrell Ceciliani brought Lawley home with a sac fly to center.
Harrisburg got on the board without the aid of a hit in the seventh. After Adam Kolarek walked Matt Skole with one out, Justin Bloxom hit a potential inning-ending double ball to third. Lawley fielded cleanly, but fired wide of second, putting runners at the corners. Ricky Hague cut Binghamton’s lead in half with a sac fly to center.
Brian Jeroloman chased Kolarek from the game with a leadoff single in the eighth, but Jon Velasquez bailed him out by retiring three straight, stranding the potential tying run on second.
Chasen Bradford inherited the one-run lead in the ninth. After a leadoff walk and a two-out single put the tying run in scoring position, the right-hander induced Jason Martinson to chop into a game-ending fielder’s choice to third.
Pill (1-5) allowed four hits and issued no walks for his first win since he beat the New Hampshire Fisher Cats on April 18, 2013. Cole (3-2) surrendered just one run on four hits over 4-2/3 innings in the defeat. Bradford earned his sixth save of the season.
The B-Mets (18-15) enjoy a day off on Monday before starting a three-game series against the Altoona Curve on Tuesday night at 6:35 PM. RHP Hansel Robles takes the mound for Binghamton. The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pregame Show begins at 6:20 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
