Charleston 1 - Savannah 0

The Savannah Sand Gnats fell to the Charleston RiverDogs 1-0 thanks to an extra-innings bases-loaded walk on Monday night at Joe P. Riley Jr. Park. The pitchers’ duel saw each team held scoreless until the tenth inning, with both starters giving up just three hits each.

With two outs in the tenth inning, LF Jose Rosario, who was in the game as a ninth-inning defensive replacement, smacked a double off of Gnats reliever John Mincone. The lefty then intentionally walked DH Aaron Judge, and then unintentionally walked 1B Mike Ford to load the bases. Next, Mincone battled to a 3-2 full count with Charleston’s RBI leader, CF Michael O’Neal, only to surrender the winning run on a called ball-four on the inside corner.

RiverDogs starter Jaron Long was electric over seven innings, allowing just three hits while striking out five without walking a single hitter. Gnats starter Kevin McGowan was step-for-step with Long over his six innings, also allowing just three hits while fanning six.

McGowan threw 60 percent of his pitches for strikes and has now allowed just three hits or less in four of his six starts.

Savannah reliever Akeel Morris added another two scoreless innings to his stellar resume, striking out four without issuing a free pass. Hitters are now batting a paltry .104 against Morris.

Third baseman Jeff McNeil was the lone thorn in Charleston’s side, finishing 3-for-4 on the night while improving his team-high batting average to .313. - team press release
