May 16th 2014 -- Nats 5, Mets 2
Friday night in D.C. the Nats scored 3 times in the bottom of the 1st and 2 more times in the bottom 3rd as the Mets drop their third straight 5-2 to the Nationals. The Mets can’t blame Citi Field for this loss. Jon Niese had his roughest outing of the season falling behind right off the bat. Jayson Werth, Wilson Ramos and Tyler Moore made it 3-0 Nats after 1. An RBI double by Scott Hairston and a RBI single by Moore made it a 5-0 cushion in the third. The Mets got their only two runs off Tanner Roark in the bottom of the 5th on an RBI grounder by Ruben Tejada and a RBI double by Eric Young Jr. Niese takes the loss he falls to 2-3. He went 4 allowed 8 hits 5 runs, only 3 earned he walked 2 and struck out 2. Carlos Torres had a pair of scoreless innings out of the pen, Jose Valverde pitched out of trouble in the 8th inning with the aid of an outfield assist by Eric Young throwing out Greg Dobbs at home to end the inning. Josh Edgin pitched a scoreless 9th. Roark allowed both runs in 5 innings he gets the win. He’s now 3-1. Rafael Soriano gets the save but he walked both Juan Legares and Eric Young Jr. with two outs in the bottom of the 9th. Daniel Murphy hit one to the wall Jayson Werth made a leaping catch to end the game. The Mets are now 19-22 and are 10-10 on the road. Saturday afternoon is game two of the series. Bartolo Colon (2-5 5.84) goes for the Mets, Gio Gonzalez (3-3 3.97) goes for Washington.
