The Savannah Sand Gnats scored twice in the bottom of the eighth inning to come from behind to stun the Charleston RiverDogs and steal a 2-1 win Tuesday night.
The Gnats (30-14) completed their seven-game homestand at 4-3 in games started this week and 5-3 in games finished, including completion of the suspended game from April 19.
Trailing 1-0 heading into the bottom of the eighth inning, with two outs and the bases empty, 3B Jeff McNeil slapped a single into left field against left-handed reliever Rony Bautista to start the rally. After Charleston called on right-handed Cesar Vargas, LJ Mazzilli ripped a double off the left-field wall that chased home McNeil from first to tie the game at 1-1. Mazzilli finished the play at third when the RiverDogs did not handle the relay cleanly. He then scored the go-ahead run on 1B Dominic Smith’s dribbler up the first line that Vargas could not field cleanly.
The RiverDogs (23-21) scored their only run in the top of the first. SS Tyler Wade singled into right field, and advanced to second on RF Aaron Judge’s line drive single into center. Wade scored on 3B Miguel Andujar’s single past Smith’s dive at first base. - team press release
