Saunders goes 4 for 5, hits first homer of the season
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (June 8, 2021) – The St. Lucie Mets pounded out 17 hits and blasted the Palm Beach Cardinals 12-6 at Clover Park on Tuesday.
All nine players in the Mets lineup had a hit. Warren Saunders led the way, going 4 for 5 and smashing his first home run of the year.
Branden Fryman went 3 for 4 with a walk, RBI, one run scored and two stolen bases. Alex Ramirez, Joe Suozzi and Jaylen Palmer had two hits apiece. Palmer stole two bases.
The Mets trailed 2-1 early but scored six runs in the third inning to take command. Ramirez tied the game 2-2 with a RBI double. Later in the inning with the bases loaded, Jose Peroza hit a comebacker to the mound that was fielded by Palm Beach starter Jose Moreno. Moreno lobbed the ball home but threw it over his catcher, allowing two runs to score for a 4-2 Mets lead.
Shervyen Newton added a sac fly later in the inning. He finished with three RBI. Saunders capped the inning with a RBI single.
The Cardinals rallied back to score four unanswered to get within a run. Reliever Luis Montas was able to get out of a bases loaded jam in the sixth to keep the Mets up 7-6. Montas pitched 1.2 scoreless innings to get the win.
The Mets scored single runs in the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings to expand the lead to 9-6. They broke the game open with three runs in the eighth. Saunders had the highlight of the inning, launching a 395-foot homer to left field.
Willy Taveras pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth to collect his second save.
The Mets have won three straight home games and have scored 36 runs in those three wins.
The Mets (18-13) and Cardinals (8-23) battle again on Wednesday. First pitch at Clover Park is scheduled for 12:10 p.m.
