1963

In the second game of a doubleheader, Auburn's Paul Alspach strikes out 24 New York-Penn League Pirate batters en route to a 1-0 victory at Batavia's MacArthur Stadium. The 21 year-old Mets farmhand's performance breaks the NYPL's strikeout record of 20, previously shared by Jerry Kleinsmith (Jamestown, 1948) and Ron Owen (Hornell, 1955).

2004

During the memorial service at St. Patrick's Cathedral in front of pews packed with Mets fans, team owner Fred Wilpon and former broadcast partner Gary Thorne deliver eulogies remembering the late Hall of Famer Bob Murphy. At the age of 79, 'Murph' after supplying 42 years of Happy Recaps for the Mets and a half of a century broadcasting big-league games, lost his battle with lung cancer.

2005

Mets outfielders Carlos Beltran and Mike Cameron, running at full speed in an attempt to catch David Ross' seventh-inning short fly to short right-center, dive head-first into each other, causing a horrific on-field collision. Right fielder Cameron, who suffers a broken nose and multiple fractures of both cheekbones, will undergo facial surgery in San Diego, with his teammate faring a bit better, suffering a concussion and a small fracture in his cheekbone.

2015

The Blue Jays, Rays, Marlins, Mets, Indians, Cubs, Royals, White Sox, Twins, Cardinals, Diamondbacks, Mariners, Padres, Dodgers, and Giants all win, marking the first time every home team is victorious in a full slate of games. The unique occurrence became a reality when the last two completed games end in extra innings in Cleveland and Seattle, with the host clubs enjoying a walk-off victory.

Baseball Reference:

1967: The Mets' Danny Frisella picks up his first major league win‚ but he's long gone when the win is posted. Frisella pitches 6 2/3 innings before being lifted‚ then races to the airport to catch a plane to take him to an Air National Guard meeting in California. Don Shaw picks up the save in the 3 - 2 win over the Pirates.

1971: Dave Roberts for the Padres and Tom Seaver for the Mets lock up in a classic pitchers duel, both pitching shutout ball for 10 innings, at which point Seaver is replaced by a pinch-hitter, having compiled 14 strikeouts. Roberts stays in the game, though, and wins a 12-inning 1 - 0 shutout when Larry Stahl hits a lead-off double in the bottom of the 12th and scores when Mets C Jerry Grote throws the ball into the outfield when he attempts to steal third base.

1988 - After going 225 at bats‚ Gary Carter finally hits his 300th career home run as the Mets beat the Cubs, 9 - 6.

2009: Australian Trent Oeltjen continues his hot streak since being purchased from AAA Reno on August 6th. The Diamondbacks outfielder bangs out four hits in a 6 - 2 win over the Mets and is now 12 for 24 since joining the team, earning the nickname "The Thunder from Down Under".

2010: Closer Francisco Rodriguez of the Mets is arrested at Citi Field after allegedly assaulting his father-in-law following tonight's 6 - 2 loss to the Colorado Rockies in which he did not pitch. He remains in police custody all night before a court appearance on August 12th and is placed on the restricted list by the Mets.

Boy oh boy, in as diplomatic a way as possible, Zach Scott let unnamed player have it, for not following plans in place to remain healthy or get healthy again.

Also, he very diplomatically called out the under performing hitters.

It has been a horror show for the first 70% of the season. Can the last 30% be a strong turnaround? I highly doubt it, personally.

Doubt it as well. If they had acquired an impact bat and impact arm(s) at the deadline, maybe. Don't think one was available though. Once Vientos comes off the IL, gets a few games and returns to form, I would bring him to NYC to see what he cab do. He is Rule 5 Eligible this winter and has to be added to the 40 man. Why not see what he can do in the bigs.

Same goes with Josh Walker - now at AAA - another Rule 5 guy that should get time up here.

I also feel about the front office is responsible for things too if they see the plan not working or the players that are not working instead of calling them out and an interview how about we assessing what you're doing and what you're not doing individually what you do not doing as a team and change the plan if needed. Obviously anyone could have seen that you know pictures are going to break down at some point innings limits energy is lack of playing time stuff of that nature that happens hitting approach has been horrible all year the process hasn't worked I guess you just reevaluate over the break but you can't just say it's the team's fault the players fault it's a US fault and we need to change that. I find Scott very awkward with the reporters and and in any of these interviews almost as awkward as Pete Alonso is with boasting and bragging about whatever. I want a GM /a president who is the steady hand in directing and showing the path of course you're going to stumble and is going to be obstacles to get through around or over but it just seems rudderless at times.
