Press Release: St. Lucie Mets Sweep Dunedin Blue Jays in Doubleheader

St. Lucie wins 4-1 in 7 innings and 4-0 in 5 innings

DUNEDIN, Fla. (August 12, 2021) – The St. Lucie Mets swept a doubleheader against the Dunedin Blue Jays on Thursday at TD Ballpark. The Mets won the first game 4-1 and then won 4-0 in a rain-shortened game 2.

The Mets extended their winning streak to a season-high seven games and improved to 10 games over .500 (47-37) for the first time this season.

In game 1, the Mets got a complete game effort from right-hander Junior Santos. Santos (4-3) held the Blue Jays to one sacrifice fly over 7.0 innings. He scattered six hits, walked just one and struck out six. Santos threw 96 pitches.

David Thompson (right hamstring), on a MiLB rehab assignment for Triple-A Syracuse, went 3 for 4 with a pair of doubles and two RBI. Thompson tied the game 1-1 with a two-out double in the fifth inning.

Jose Martinez (left meniscus), on MLB rehab assignment, scored from third base on a wild pitch immediately following Thompson's double to put the Mets ahead 2-1. Alexander Ramirez followed with a RBI single to plate Thompson to make it 3-1.

Thompson ripped a RBI double in the top of the seventh high off the center field wall for an insurance run.

Martinez went 1 for 2 with an infield hit, walk and run. He played five innings in right field.

Blue Jays starters Trent Palmer (1-2) took the loss. He allowed three runs and four hits over 4.2 innings.

In game 2, the Mets got another complete game from their starter Luis Moreno. Moreno pitched 5.0 innings and gave up just one hit, a two out single in the second inning. He faced one over the minimum and retired nine straight to end the rain-shortened game.

Three of the Mets first four hitters – Rowdey Jordan, Alex Ramirez and Brandon McIlwain – hit doubles in the first inning against Jays starter Alejandro Melean. McIlwain's double plated two for a 2-0 lead.

JT Schwartz hit a RBI single in the fourth inning for his first professional hit. That drove in Jack-Thomas Wold, who previously doubled in the inning for his first pro hit. Jordan capped the inning with a RBI single for a 4-0 lead.

Jordan went 3 for 3 with a double, RBI and run.

After Moreno got Justin Ammons to ground out to end the fifth inning the teams vacated the field with inclement weather moving in the area. The game did not resume.

The Mets (47-37) and Blue Jays (37-49) play the fourth game of their series at TD Ballpark on Friday at 6:30 p.m. It will be a single nine-inning game.
