Tom Brennan - Maxwell Smart Spotted in Flushing

"What????"

"We spent HOW MUCH for 3 years of a guy who's 37?"

"Are you NUTS?"

No, frankly, I am not nuts.  NEITHER ARE YOU.  Happy? Oh, yeah!

It is time to be delirious.

Steve Cohen, you see, heard about supply chain delay issues and so he's doing his big shopping early.  Stocking up.

What did we get for our dough (well, Uncle Steve's dough, but who's quibbling?)

1) Relevance - the Braves are no longer better than the Mets, assuming equal health.

2) Swagger - Jacob and Max give you that.  One of the best tandems in baseball history, if both are healthy.

3) Turnstiles spinning like mad. Packed houses = stadium-rocking excitement.

4) The second half "wilt factor" is much less of a potential occurrence.  Long losing streaks have been banished.

5) He'll inspire deGrom to be even better.

With the 4 moves in the last 4 days, it feels like they've added 15 Ws.

No doubt, Uncle Steve is not done.  After all...let's do some math:

77 + 15 = 92 wins.  Let's add 5 to 8 more, get it to 100.

Reconsider Scherzer's 2021:

A WHIP in the mid 80s.  WOW.

A hellacious strikeouts per inning rate.  WOW.

15-4.  WOW.

No reason to slip.  Fellow HOF power elites Randy Johnson, Steve Carlton, and Nolan Ryan did not slip in that age span.

I don't think Max will either.  Why?  Because Max is Max, OK?

Max is actually Maxwell, as in Maxwell M. Scherzer.

Signing him?

That's MAXWELL SMART!

Max is just 10-9 career vs. the Braves, but was 44-14 against the Mets, Phils, Marlins and Nats.  Hey, Seaver was just 12-20 vs. the Reds - you can't be 14-4 against every team.

But Scherzer is 54-23 lifetime against the NL East.

Scherzer.  A Beast of the East.

And not just one, but TWO of the most dominant pitchers of all time, together?

Ought to help the other Mets' pitchers too.  Great brains to pick.

Maxwell Smart is loyal, too.

He just predicted 99 wins, because of Agent 99.

99 wins works for me.  Winning returns to Citifield.

Forevermore to be more aptly called...

Well, this is an 8:00 AM article, so it's time for my 8 o'clock coffee.   Ciao.

The work is far from done. Jacob deGrom is still a recovering work in progress. Javy Baez appears headed to Detroit. The infield questions remain. The rest of the starting rotation and bullpen questions remain. Canha is not quite a Conforto replacement. There are many more changes afoot (or there had better be.)

Necessary sign.

IMO the best 1-2 punch in the NL.

Hope to see a new SP3 today.

Reese, I had a problem with Baez 6 years. Lindor and Baez would be blocking two infield positions for a very long time. Maybe I have Vientos wrong, but he hit 22 HRs in his last 210 ABs in AA and AAA, while hitting over .300 during that stretch - at an age younger than Pete Alonso when he turned pro. Seems by projection that he ought to be very good. Baty also ought to be very good. Both should be ready by opening day 2023 or sooner. Mauricio feels more and more like OD 2024, but that has to factor in, too. I Baez would have taken 2 years, $80 million, I'd have been more OK with that.

Yep, they stilll have holes, and injuries could blow the whole thing up. So they need to do more - but I doubt they've ever done so much in an off season before December starts.

Mack, there is a curry to sign guys before the lockout - so maybe we get our SP3 today or tomorrow. No predictions from me.

I wonder how Adam Oller factors into their thinking.

Mack Ade said...

My guess is guys like Oller, Peterson, Yamamoto are not being looked like future opening day rotation pieces.

Jake, Max, and Walker seem set.

Carrasco will have to win a slot in ST.

The future of McGill is fluid.

Don't think we will see any more additions until the lockout ends. But I could be wrong. Next thing to watch is the non-tender deadline on Wednesday - Mets will need to cut players to add the 4 signed this week. Gsellman is my mostly pick to be non-tendered.

Roster is at 39 - 40 if you ciunt Cano. So 3 or 4 will need to come off to add the 4 signed - 4 to come off if Cano is included. Lots of questionable guys on current list. Nogosek, Gsellman, Mark Payton, Travis Blankenhorn for example

Tom Brennan said...

John, those non-tenders would not be big losses.
Hopefully, Payton will get his chance somewhere, if not here - but maybe he starts here and is an injury call up.

As for Baez...

It's sad that Mets Twitter has returned to their evil ways this morning.

Baez didn't offer last year's deal to himself. The Mets did.

He wanted to play with his buddy last year so he took Steve's money.

He then played all-star baseball for us in the 2nd half of the season.

He now wants to his natural position and people are slamming him this morning.

Love the "Get Smart" references - always a favorite show of mine.
I agree that the Mets and Braves on paper both have very competitive rosters. The Braves are a much stronger hitting team, but with 2 aces the Mets can mitigate in head-to-head matchups. Unfortunately Tom, if we want to win those games by 2-1 scores, we're going to have to leave Citi Field fences where they are. :)

Tom Brennan said...

Paul, I often made the argument, right or wrong, that if the fences were moved in, our hitters would really benefit, while Jake and Max would be minimally impacted. I just don’t want Citi to play like arguably the worst hitting park in baseball anymore. Maxwell Smart agrees. Fences at 99% of current depth would help.

Mack, Baez not a surprise to me. His salary would have been huge, and larded over by luxury tax. I wish him well in the AL.

Several thoughts, if I may:
- I think Guillorme is a roster casualty. No sense in keeping him now. Enough flexibility. Blankenhorn is better.
- I expect them to keep the 39 year old stiff, but I’d let him go. They may be hoping he gets hurt in spring training so they can recover some insurance, LOL. He counts against the budget either way.
- I would replace Mazeika with Alfaro.
- With Plummer and Lee, Payton is one too many.
- I’d cut Lucchesi.

So, my cuts would be Guillorme, Lucchesi, Cano, Payton.

Cano still not showing on the 40 man. They are at 38… still, I leave a spot open for the Rule 5… I’m looking to steal a lefty…

TexasGusCC said...

Well, cancel the Alfaro/Mazeika thought. Alfaro has zero options left, while Mazeika has 2. Nido has zero…

Baez just signed with Detroit for 6 years, 140m.

Guys, this is a blessing in disguise. I know some of you like him and wanted him back. But I have to say thank God he's gone.

First, if he reverted back to his old ways this would have been a bust. I just don't want guys who strike out 200 times a year and have an OBP under 300.

Secondly, and most importantly I believe he would have destroyed any possible culture/ comradery the Mets could hope to accomplish. With him and Lindor together they would have looked to take over the team. I can't see that meshing with Scherzers personality. I believe it really would have divided the team, especially if they get off to slow starts.

Gary Seagren said...

Joe P I agree on the clubhouse thing and from what I heard all the additions are a plus. Baez contract wasn't so big that SC couldn't have gotten him if he wanted so I guess thumbs down on Javy. Lindor is a big key going forward for alot of reasons but the clubhouse nonsense has to stop and the fact FL isn't our leader speaks volumes and must change.

Gary Seagren said...

Also players who cause a problem must serve time in the "Cone of Silence" it's a rule for 22'. Does anyone know where Addison Russell is?

$34 million a year demands the recipient player act maturely and in a team-first manner. Be a big asset to the team that pays you big.
