Nuthin’ Still Happened
Well, we are down to our last day before the trade deadline takes place and the only new players on the team are outfielder Tyler Naquin and DH Daniel Vogelbach.
Now, don’t get me wrong. Both of these are a huge upgrade over those they replaced (Travis Jankowski and JD Davis), but I, like most of you, expected at least one huge addition during this period.
A bunch of quality players have changed teams in the last couple of days, but there seems to be a healthy list of RHDH and RPs still out there, so maybe I will have something major to write about tomorrow. I thought I would have today, but, alas, it hasn’t happened.
Extensions
Is it my imagination, or are we the only team that can’t seem to pull the extension trigger during the season? Others do all throughout the season. Atlanta does it with ease. And yet the Mets let their players enter free agency time and again.
Well, yesterday’s conversation Brandon Nimmo had with the gaggle may have spoken volumes here. He said he would love to remain a Met but the team doesn’t want to discuss an extension until after the season ends.
The team said.
This just doesn’t make any sense to me. Don’t you know that the second these players become a free bird, that other teams will begin to throw dollar offers at them?
What if you have determined that this player is worth around a $100mil extension and then some other team extends their centerfielder, during the season, with a $200mil deal? What does this make your proposed offer look like.
I don’t know, but is it s hard to ask a player to call up his agent and have them both meet with you at Peter Luger’s for a ribeye? I mean, if I’m a player that my team refuses to sit down with me during the season, but then expects me to ignore other offers after the season, or bring to me what the best offer is so I can match it, well, screw you. You didn’t think enough of me when I played for you. Where was YOUR loyalty then?
The Mets have signed RHRP pitcher Jeffrey Wilson.
Wilson, who was undrafted in the draft this year. Is a 6-3. 210 relief specialist, out of Pensacola State College (FL).
This year, in eight appearances, he went 2-0, 4.05, 13.1-IP, 23-K, 8-BB.

3rd-rder Brandon Sproat did not come to terms with @Mets. His slot value at No. 90 was $691,300. Gators RHP, 7 ER in final 6 GS with fastball touching 99 mph & slider reaching 91. Also was highest unsigned pick in 2019
-I don’t have all the details here, but, as best as I can determine, I think the Mets just ran out of bonus money here.

#16 RHP Justin Lee Notre Dame, Los Angeles
Lee is an extremely athletic righty up to 94 mph with some of the most impressive metric traits you can find in this class. The fastball has near perfect four seam efficiency with serious ride coming out of a low launch release. The changeup fizzles out at the plate and falls off the earth, tumbling in at less than 1000 rpms at times. Lee can spin a slider in there too, flashing above average with strong velocity, up to 85 mph. There's starter traits here and projection as well.

#7. Jacob Wilson Shortstop, Grand Canyon
Jacob Wilson has been one of the most accomplished, mature hitters in the entire country during his stay at GCU. He's got a prolific eye at the plate with an extremely advanced approach and a grand willingness to use the whole field. Wilson never strikes out. Like, ever. In 2022, he took 25 free passes, punching out just 7 times. Wilson showcases 40-grade power but many believe he'll grow into fringe-average pop in the pros. He's an average defender at shortstop and could comfortably move to third base or second base. Elite instincts on the field and makeup off the field, Wilson checks a ton of boxes and is a very popular figure among his peers and evaluators.

Some July numbers from a bunch of players, and Mr. 1.08 returns today. Wow.
Deals. Hopefully, the Mets have a few solid tricks up their sleeves. The Yankee Magicians have done their usual deadline magic.
Does the failure to sign Sproat make Eppler a Goat? Should they have skipped Jett and figured out a way to sign Sproat?
Pete's low laser beam HR yesterday is why he hits a lot of HRs. A mere mortal hitting that ball has a double up the alley to the wall on one or two bounces.
Starling Marte rather than Conforto? Brilliant move.
Jed Lowrie is hitting .185 with 3 HRs in fairly limited at bats. But that is still more HRs than Dom Smith - 3 more, to be precise.
The topic on extensions is very curious. I always thought it was the player that didn't want negotiations during the season to become a distraction. For the front office to say that doesn't make sense. I agree with Mack's position. Grab 'em while you can. 100 games into the season is enough to know their value to the team.

Tim Healey in Newsday reports that 19 of the Mets' 22 picks have signed. Sproat and 2 unnamed others are the exceptions.
With my understanding of the bonus money, the Mets did not mismanage Sproat unless he was looking for first round money as a third round pick. They could have paid him $1M, or about 300k over slot and still have been below the 5% limit that takes away future draft picks. Thinking that they just didn't want to go as high as the player thought his value was and the player is betting on himself to go round 1next year for 2 or 3mil slot money

I thought Szap had potential in the pen. Zwack is having a great year, but he is 24 in A+, but it does seem a little steep but I like the move. Don't want to give up any of our top prospects

Against lefties this year he's .257 BA .886 OPS. 9 HRs in 109 ABs. So as a strict platoon with Vogey, which he will be, not bad numbers
DH platoon of Vogelbach/Ruf sounds great. Davis is addition by subtraction, the three pitchers seem like too much but if it means a WS…

It appears that negotiating with other GM’s is a weakness of Eppler’s.
Getting Trevor May and presumably David Peterson to pen will help much. Montes de Oca is getting close.
Not to interrupt the complaining too much, but the Mets picked up Mychal Givens (a 32-year-old veteran, has pitched to a 2.66 ERA with 51 strikeouts in 40.2 innings this season) from the Cubs.
Presumably, he will add to the bullpen mix and give them some depth for the stretch run (along with May and Peterson, as Tom stated).
I, for one, am glad that Billy Eppler held onto his prized minor leaguers........the team is playing well and they addressed two of their biggest needs (RH DH and BP depth), without losing anyone of significance. I was just waiting for another Pete Crow Armstrong type of trade (who will likely haunt the Mets more then Kelenic ever will).
The Givens trade looks good. The Mets gave up Saul Gonzalez, pitcher at St Lucie.
