Tom Brennan: Fuego in Metsville

Mets are smoking hot. FUEGO! An 8-3 win Wednesday night.

Jesse Winker first inning GRAND SLAM!  Boy, is he not Darin Ruf, huh?

Better by far to have a Winker…than a Stinker.

The line up needs to spread the wealth, though. The Mets’ economical 7 hits were comprised of 5 hits by Lindor, Nimmo, and Vientos at the top of the line up, and one by Alvarez.

Pitching-wise, Megill was serviceable (4 IP, 3 runs), and the pen was stellar for the remaining 5 (scoreless) innings.  Danny Young was happy Megill’s outing was short…Young got the W and is 3-0.

Post-All Star game, the Mets have a team 3.57 ERA, 5th best in baseball.

Mets?  Winning, and grinning.

Last 81 games, half a season, they are 52-29, a 104 win pace, and playing their best ball of the season. Any other team 52-29 in their last 81? Asking for a friend.

Why not win a World Series this year?  Why not?

Of course, the friggin’ Phillies and Braves both won again. Ever easy? Nah.

MINORS:

Syracuse was down 10-3 and rallied, but still lost 10-8.  25-33 in 2nd half.

- Drew Gilbert had 2 hits, including a HR.

Blade Tidwell (0-8, 6.17 in AAA) was demolished and destroyed, 7 runs surrendered in less than 2 innings, and 68 runs allowed in 107 innings in 2024.

I am starting to earnestly wish the Mets had selected 105.5 MPH California Angel reliever Ben Joyce instead of the earlier-drafted Blade, who is 2-12 this year overall.

Saul Garcia’s first Brooklyn start was 5 shutout innings, 7 Ks, in a 1-0 win.

 - Call him Game Ball Saul, y’all.

 - Morabito gets on always, last night with a hit and a walk.

St Lucie won, 4-3.

 - Colin Houck 2 hits, 2 RBIs.

 - - Despite a tough first full year, he has a decent 49 RBIs.

 - Marco Vargas rolling.  Last 6 games, 5 for 15 and ELEVEN WALKS. Wow.

Binghamton lost 2 games of the 7 inning variety.

- Jaylen Palmer had 3 hits and 2 RBIs in the DH.

 - The Ponies are reeling. 2-8 in last 10. No Jett propulsion.

 - Nick Lorusso, I just realized, has been out the last 6 weeks. On the IL.

 - - I know not the nature of his injury.

 - - AA wraps up September 15, so his solid early season may be done.

EATING CROW

Former Mets prospect Pete Crow Armstrong had 3 hits and 3 RBIs last night in Chicago’s 12-0 no hitter win

Over the past several weeks, Petey Crow is playing like a superstar.

Did we really need Javy Baez’s rental that badly?

Didn't see this happening against Boston.

What is it with our pitchers in Syracuse? Things go well in Binghamton, then in Syracuse? Just asking Sprout ,Tidwell, Vasil, Hamel?

Steve, Sproat was much better his last start. His burp is over. Hamel a bit better lately. The other 2 are simply bad this year.

To me, Megill looks kind of shaky. He used to project calm confidence on the mound, now he looks like he lost his best friend. He could be a weak link in this run.

I told everybody about Ben Joyce at draft time but what do I know about the draft

Tidwell should be immediately shut down and told to not throw a thing for 90 days.

I told everyone on draft day that he would someday elevate to the Mets SP1, but what do I know about the draft?

Tidwell pitched well in Binghamton to earned the move to Syracuse. .265 era over 37.1 innings. 1 home run allowed. 1.07 whip. Not bad. Now in Syracuse - 6.17 era over 70.0 inning, 11 homers and 1.64 whip. Not good.

Sprout did pitch well in his last start. Anxious for the next two. Then I will reserve my judgement on Syracuse.

Hamel had pitched better over August and September. More like last year in Binghamton. But the beginning of the year?

Vasil pitched much better in June and July. Stats compared to Binghamton?

What happens in Syracuse?

I mostly agreed. I thought more like SP2. (You know a heck more than I do).

Fun ride in Citi and playing our best baseball AND we're the Mets so am I dreaming? LOL I'll just keep dreaming and their a very likeable bunch. Very impressed with DS and his front office and there ability to pivot quickly when needed which is a very refreshing change.

One Megill mystery: Though he's 6'7" and towers over everyone, whenever he's interviewed post-game he's looking UP most of the time, instead of down toward the questioner.
What's "up" with that?

Let's enjoy the ride. Got tickets for the September 16th game.

Kelenic with a three run homerun in the first inning. Don’t hate the kid like I used to. The bottom of Atlanta’s lineup is decrepit. They are getting starting pitching out of their hole and keeping them in the race. Those starters on another team would have ERA’s two runs higher each. Have to figure out why.

I do blame the media for many Mets issues. It’s rediculous that the Mets have so much media credentials in the club house. I wouldn’t play for the Mets unless it was a one year deal just to see what it’s like, i .e. Verlander. The money is the same all over and that market is a player drainer, with assholes like Heyman and Sherman thrown in trying to manufacture stories.

7 in a row is great, but now it seems like everyone ahead of us is on fire as well. Too much to ask us to close out the season on a 29 game winning streak. Maybe 26-3 gets it done. 😏

Tom Brennan said...

Adam, I’d settle for 25-4.

Gus, I agree. Many critical writers…and I am one at times…but, at least, I am right. LOL

Tom Brennan said...

Mack, the weird thing is Joyce was picked just one pick before the 2022 Sproat pick, the year Sproat didn’t sign.

Tom Brennan said...

Ray, put me in your backpack.

If that’s the best we can do, count me in.
