Tom Brennan: Francisco Alvarez in 2025 - Pick One Scenario

It is easy to forget that Francisco Alvarez, who has been around for a while now, will play all of 2025 as a mere 23 year old.

As a point of comparison, Pete Alonso debuted at 24.3 years of age.

Alvarez won't play his age 24 season until 2026.

Alvarez had a down year in 2024 in terms of power with 11 HRs in 308 at bats, as compared to 25 HRs in 382 at bats in 2023, his first relatively full season.

He did have that thumb injury that required surgery after he slipped and fell rounding first base early in the season, and who knows how that impacted him the rest of the way in 2024.

 - He hit .296 in the first half of 2024, but just .187 in the second half.

So...

How do you think he will hit in 2025?

I present 3 theoretical scenarios - pick one, or tell us yours:

1. He remains perhaps confused and scuffles in 2025.

   - 400 ABs, 12 HRs, 40 RBIs, .220

2. He realizes his raw power will create HRs, and becomes a line drive contact hitter:

   - 450 ABs, 15 HRs, 65 RBIs, .265

3. He clicks into being a beast, alongside his buddies Soto, Vientos, and Lindor:

   - 500 ABs, 33 HRs, 90 RBIs, .280

I'm going with Option 3.

Your thoughts?

Remember 1969: Remember's Ramblings

Remember's Ramblings – Volume 1, Article 12

December 31, 2024

For Auld Lang Syne

                                                     Should auld acquaintance be forgot,

And never brought to mind?

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,

And auld lang syne.

For auld lang syne, my jo,

For auld lang syne,

We'll tak a cup o' kindness yet,

For auld lang syne,

And surely ye'll be your pint-stowp!

And surely I'll be mine!

And we'll tak a cup o' kindness yet,

For auld lang syne.

I guess it is only fitting that Remember 1969 should get the New Year’s Eve kickoff piece and speak of Auld Lang Syne.

Roughly translated into ‘Old Times Sake’, it is the traditional Scottish poem that has made its way into American New Year’s tradition.

So for Old Time Sake, let’s kick 2024 out and bring in 2025.    Ah.. 2024.    It was a rather weird year for the Mets and us fans.   Things looked pretty grim through the first 5 games, but as they say – “it’s not how you start, it’s how you finish”, and finish well they did.    Just two games short of the World Series for a team that did not have an ace pitcher on the roster and the bullpen was solid for the most part, but overall rated middle of the pack in most statistical categories.

Pete Alonso had a ‘down’ year (only 33 homers).   Francisco Lindor never got going until May, Brandon Nimmo led the team in RBI most of the year.   Starling Marte showed his age.   Francisco Alvarez did as well.   Jeff McNeil forgot how to hit until July and Brett Baty was so poor he was back in Syracuse by early June.

So how did this team win 89 games and advance to the NLCS?    A rookie manager seemed to be the right personality, Francisco Lindor took the team on his back from June forward and played like an MVP.   He would have won one had it not been for that other-worldly 50-50 season by the guy out on the left coast.

And a lot of heart and some timely homers.   Not many will forget Lindor’s two run go-ahead shot in the ninth inning of the final day double header after the Braves had re-taken the lead in the bottom of the 8th after the Mets finally come alive in the top of the 8th.     Then Alonso’s big bash burying the Brewers followed by Lindor’s grand slam to finish the Phillies in the NLDS.

The reports are that the 2024 Mets had as much character and chemistry as any team in the majors and nearly as much if not more than any Mets team since 1962.    Character matters – it is too bad we cannot put a WAR value on it.

Without belaboring all of 2024, let’s just revel in the year this team gave us.  Talk about playing meaningful games in September and October, our team did just that and we were fortunate to see it.

And we'll tak a cup o' pennant yet,

For auld lang syne.

Remember’s Reminiscing:  Mets Birthdays of December 31

Happy Birthday today to Rick Aguilera (63) and Kevin Kaczmarski (33).

Happy New Year to all the

Mack’s Mets writers, readers and commenters!

Reese Kaplan -- To the Mets DH Often Meant "Doesn't Hit"

Aside from all of the dying Roki Sasaki news, the interminable Pete Alonso will he or won’t he pieces and the various rumors floating around about other free agents and trades, it’s once again time to come back to the question of Designated Hitter.  The Mets have failed pretty miserably in the various people they’ve trotted out their to be their DH and still nothing clear is indicated that 2025 will be any better.

Yes, we all saw the headlines about the Mets pursuing Teoscar Hernandez who returned to the Dodgers.  Part of it was a three year commitment vs. a two year one, part of it was the familiarity with the environment and part of it is the seemingly indestructible team the Dodgers have built that before a new season begins seems ready to take the top seed position for reaching the World Series.  I don’t blame Hernandez for taking the Dodgers offer given its term and the club’s high level of projected success.

Every now and then you do have to ask questions about the Mets ownership and front office when they think that the Juan Soto contract alone will have changed all of baseball’s perception about what the Mets are, who they will become and what they represent.  It’s becoming abundantly clear that the addition of the best available player in baseball doesn’t mean people are necessarily lining up to become a part of the Citifield squad in the hope that they will contend at the same level as the Dodgers.

So now the DH question arises once again.  It was interesting to see Hernandez floated as both an outfielder and a DH.  Maybe David Stearns is acknowledging that trotting out say Starling Marte in that role is not going to give you the run production you really need from someone whose role by definition is to hit.

Headlines emerged that the Mets are considering a reunion with Jesse Winker.  Yes, he seemed to be well liked by his teammates and in his on-again/off-again way did contribute a bit more than some folks expected.  However, he’s not a full time DH to play every day and would need a platoon partner possibly but not necessarily named J.D. Martinez.  So is the appeal in Winker a half season of familiarity or is it his $2 million price tag he received as a 2024 salary?

I notice that while this front office is much better at protecting leaks on who is or is not on the radar for a Mets contract, we have not heard anything about the still unemployed Anthony Santander who outhit Pete Alonso last year but a considerable margin.  Nor have we heard more solid information about the acquisition of other proven hitters like Alex Bregman or Nolan Arenado whose defensive acumen puts them in on-the-field roles rather than only earning their pay with a stick in their hands.

Some of the previously mentioned possibilities for DH are now off the board, too.  Gleyber Torres will not be standing in a government office applying for food stamps as he has found a bigger paycheck in Detroit.  Each day you can read the headlines and see who is no longer available and you’re left scratching your head wondering were the Mets even considering this particular player or is there a double secret probation protecting access to what the DH plans actually are?

Right now the fans are probably more frustrated than the media with the lack of action in this regard with AAAA players like Daniel Vogelbach as likely to become a Met again as would someone much more productive.  Some action in this regard would put a lot of hearts and stomachs at ease.

Please do SOMETHING besides simply waiting to see the resources become fewer and fewer.
