Tom Brennan - METS' PITCHER 2017 PROJECTIONS

Tom Brennan - METS' PITCHER 2017 PROJECTIONS

Some folks don't like making projections.  But, c'mon folks,  baseball is only a game, so why not speculate and guess?  Opening day is, after all, TOMORROW!

I'm supremely confident that my projections are spot-on. Even if I end up not even close at season's end! So, here goes:

SYNDERGAARD: 20-6, 2.20 ERA, 240 Ks, 210 innings.  Cy Young.

DEGROM: 20-7, 2.16 ERA, 210 K, 210 IP. CY Young runner up.  The two co-aces.

HARVEY: 14-9, 2.85 ERA, 185 Ks, 200 IP.  Lots more Dark Knight than Gladys Knight.

GSELLMAN: 14-7, 3.20 ERA, 170 Ks, 200 IP.  ROY.

WHEELER: 8-5, 3.40 ERA, 120 K, 125 IP.  Comeback player of the year.

MATZ: 9-6, 3.05 ERA, 160 Ks, 170 IP.

LUGO: 6-5, 3.75, ERA 90 K, 110 IP

MONTERO: 4-4, 3.80 ERA, 90 K, 90 IP

FAMILIA: 40 SV, 2.03 ERA, 90 K, 76 IP, 3-5.

REED: 10 SV, 2.73 ERA, 80 K, 80 IP, 1-2.

ALL OTHERS: BLEVIN, SMOKER, ROBLES, ETC.: 3.50 ERA 2-5, 3.80 ERA.

FINAL TOTAL: 101-61. Oh yeah.  Reyes said "better than 2006." I agree.

So, my guess is as good as yours (not really, mine is better, but I need to be humble, dudes)!  What are your projections?

Mack – Draft 5-Pack – Devin Hairston, Will Crowe, Darrell Woodall, A.J. Labas, Joe Perez

BADevin Hairston is putting together a strong junior season and is hitting .337/.375/.478 in 23 games. Somewhat surprisingly given All-American Brendan McKay’s presence in the Cardinals lineup and Hairston’s 5-foot-8, 175-pound frame, he leads the team with 25 RBIs. Long known primarily for his slick defense, Hairston has developed into one of Louisville’s best hitters. He batted .361/.415/.478 and led the team with 56 runs last year. Now playing a more prominent role in the Cardinals’ lineup, he has continued to hit. He said he tries to stay within himself at the plate and use all fields to hit.

Louisville - 2016: Started all 64 games at shortstop earning All-America honors while hitting .361 with three home runs, 45 RBI, 16 doubles and a team-high 56 runs scored. Was 3-for-5 with two doubles and one RBI in June 4 NCAA Regional win over Ohio State. Finished 2-for-4 with one RBI and scored once in May 20 win at Wake Forest. Went 2-of-3 with a home run and two RBI in May 19 victory over Demon Deacons. Was 2-for-4 with two RBI in May 17 win over Indiana. Had four total hits while hitting safely in all three wins against No. 10 NC State on May 13-15. Hit safely in all three games at No. 17 North Carolina on May 6-8. Was 2-for-4 with a double, one RBI and scored twice in win over St. John’s in second game of April 29 doubleheader. Connected for second home run of the season in April 24 win at Boston College. Delivered game-winning RBI single to clinch walk-off win against No. 12 Kentucky and cap three-hit day at the plate on April 19. Was 2-for-5 with one RBI and scored twice in April 17 win against No. 16 Clemson. Went 3-of-5 with two RBI and three runs scored in series-opening victory against Tigers on April 15. Had two hits and scored three runs in April 13 win at No. 9 Kentucky. Was 2-for-5 with one RBI and scored twice in April 9 win at No. 5 Florida State. Finished 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBI in April 8 loss to the Seminoles. Hit safely in all three wins over Virginia Tech highlighted by 2-for-4 outing with a double and three RBI in April 3 victory over Hokies. Was 3-for-6 with a double and scored career best four runs in win at WKU on March 29. Finished 5-for-13 with three RBI and three runs scored in series win over No. 9 Virginia. Was 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI and a stolen base in March 23 win at Purdue. Doubled and drove in two runs in March 18 series-opener at No. 5 Miami. Went 3-for-4 with a double and scored twice in March 16 win over Wright State. Doubled, drove in two runs and scored three times in March 15 win against Xavier. Was 3-for-3 with two walks, double and one RBI in March 8 win over Longwood. Hit safely in all three games against Princeton, highlighted by a 2-for-3 outing with two RBI and a run scored in March 6 win. Hit safely in all three wins against SIU Edwardsville, including a 3-for-6 performance with two RBI and two runs scored in season-opener on Feb. 19.

D1 - Wil Crowe (South Carolina) continues to build his draft resume on the strength of consistent durability and power stuff. Working into the seventh inning once again for the Gamecocks, Crowe brought his power stuff to the hill, living at 93-97 mph and carrying it all the way through his outing. He also continues to show power two-seam life and has pitched very aggressively off that fastball. His curveball was sharp in this one, and he threw some effective changeups down in the zone as well. His three pitch mix and aggressive use of his fastball should put Crowe squarely in the first round this June.

Trinity RHP A.J. Labas struck out 13 batters. He threw strikes 78% of the time & first pitch strikes to 21-of-27 batters.

PG - AJ Labas is a 2017 RHP/1B with a 6-3 220 lb. frame from Middleburg, FL who attends Trinity Christian Academy. Extra big and strong build, looks like a college linebacker. High energy delivery that he repeats very well, high elbow in back, arm is fast and clean coming through from a high 3/4's slot. Steady 89-91 mph fastball, gets a bit of late life to get off barrels and has good downhill angle. Slurve type breaking ball has very tight spin at times with sharp biting action, showed feel and command of the pitch and was plus at times. Did not show a change up this outing but will be very interesting if he can develop one with his present fastball/curveball combination. Good student, verbal commitment to North Florida.

Nathan Rode‏ @NathanRode  -  3B/RHP Joe Perez (Archbishop McCarthy HS, FL) was 3-for-4 today with 7 RBIs. GS, 1B, 2B

PG - Joseph Perez is a 2017 3B/1B/RHP with a 6-3 205 lb. frame from Pembroke Pines, FL who attends Archbishop Edward McCarthy HS. Big and strong athletic build, pretty mature physically. Right handed hitter, took an outstanding BP, showed big bat speed and raw pull power, used his lower half very well, ball explodes off the bat. Swings were more tentative in the games without the same aggressiveness and bat speed. Big arm strength at third base, stays balanced well and fields the ball out front, also plays first base. Potential primary pitcher in the future, has limited present experience on the mound. Shows big arm strength from a high energy delivery, big downhill plane to the plate, fastball topped out at 96 mph early before settling down. Slider flashed big vertical depth at times. Power arm with a power bat. Good student, verbal commitment to South Florida.

4/1/17

INJURY UPDATE - SP - Seth Lugo

RHSP Seth Lugo has been placed on the disabled list with what the team calls 'arm fatigue'.
This opens the door for RHP Rafael Montero to go north with the team.

Roster - Las Vegas 51st

I don't know why but the Mets always waits for the last day to release the rosters of the teams in the system. I'm sure it has something to do with who sticks with the Mets, Lugo or Montero, and then it goes down the affiliates from there.

I don't have the entire Vegas roster, but I can confirm the lion share that are 'on the plane' out of Florida:

Starters - Ricky Knapp (a pleasant surprise), Sean Gilmartin, Adam Wilk, Donovan Hand

Relief - Paul Sewald, Chase Bradford

Catchers - Kevin Plawecki, Xorge Carillo

Infield - Dominic Smith, Gavin Cecchini, Josh Rodriguez, Amed Rosario, Phillip Evans, Matt Reynolds (will also play outfield)

Outfield - Jayce Boyd, Travis Taijeron, Victor Cruzado

NHSI Top Propects – Mark Vientos, Alex Toral, Joe Perez, Jacob Heatherly, Hans Crouse

From  Baseball America - USA Baseball’s National High School Invitational, now in its sixth year, has become the top high school regular-season event in the country. This year’s event features 16 of the country’s top teams, populated with 11 members of Baseball America’s Top 100 High School Prospects. Records and rankings are through games of March 19.

American Heritage HS, Plantation, Fla. - Heritage has one of the most talented offenses in the country this season. Senior shortstop Mark Vientos was a first team All-American, thanks largely to his explosive bat speed and power potential.

PG - Mark Vientos is a 2017 SS/3B with a 6-4 190 lb. frame from Pembroke Pines, FL who attends Charles W Flanagan HS. Tall and lanky athletic build, narrow waist and broad shoulders, young athlete who is very projectable physically. Very smooth actions defensively, light on his feet with soft and quick hands at the ball, compact arm action with good arm strength, has the athleticism to stay at shortstop even as he matures physically. Right handed hitter, deep hand load, has strength and lift in his swing, hands will occasionally get under the ball, can create carry to the opposite field ally, swing mechanics and timing weren't consistent but the tools are there to develop. Is the type of player who scouts dream about his potential. Good student, verbal commitment to Miami. Selected for the Perfect Game All-American Classic.

Archbishop McCarthy HS, SW Ranches, Fla. - McCarthy is as deep as high school teams come. The Mavericks have two of Baseball America’s preseason Top 100 Prospects in Miami recruits Alex Toral (No. 46) and Joe Perez (No. 57).

PG - Alejandro Toral is a 2017 1B/OF/LHP with a 6-2 220 lb. frame from Davie, FL who attends Archbishop Edward McCarthy HS. Big and strong build, mature physically. Left handed hitter, creates big bat speed with ideal lower half use, hands are loose and smooth coming through the zone, has some lift in his swing without selling out for power, will hit the ball the other way and drive it with authority, polished and mature hitter with outstanding swing mechanics. 7.37 runner, moves well for his size at first base, advanced footwork with soft hands and good balance, will be an asset defensively at first. Can also play left field. Very good student, verbal commitment to Miami. Selected for the Perfect Game All-American Classic.

Cullman (Ala.) HS - Led by head coach Brent Patterson, the Bearcats have been a consistent power in Alabama, and they have an elite senior class this season. Lefthander Jacob Heatherly, the No. 6 prospect in Baseball America’s preseason rankings, gives Cullman a chance to win every time he toes the rubber.

PG - Jacob Heatherly is a 2017 LHP/OF with a 6-3 200 lb. frame from Cullman, AL who attends Cullman HS. Big and strong athletic build, especially in the lower half. Creates good angle to the plate from a high 3/4's arm slot, some upper body lean on release, slightly closed landing out front, repeats delivery well and the arm works cleanly. Fastball topped at 92 mph, can get the ball to both sides of the plate and has some sink down in the zone. Slider is the better of his two breaking balls, has a sharp bite and good spin, curveball shows good shape at times and he has feel for throwing it for strikes. Tends to slow his arm and body on his change up. Interesting southpaw with arm strength and two present legit breaking balls. Good student, verbal commitment to Alabama. Selected for the Perfect Game All-American Classic.

Dana Hills HS, Dana Point, Calif. - On the mound, senior righthander Hans Crouse is a fiery competitor; he turned in a masterful performance for the 18U national team in the gold medal game of last summer’s COPABE Pan Am Championships.

PG - Can run his fastball up to 97 mph! Very good and up to 96 at PG All American Classic. Fun to watch him pitch

Reese Kaplan -- Scouting the Enemy -- NY Yankees

Oh, how times have changed!  As a Mets fan, other than the Miracle Mets of 1969 and a brief flirtation in the middle part of the 1980s during the 2nd World Championship, New York has always been a Yankees town.  Even now with two straight post-season appearances for the Mets while the Yankees remained out of the running, there’s still no clear frontrunner for the title Kings of New York.

To wit, a Friday New York Post article cited a recent Quinnipiac University poll regarding the preference for the New York baseball teams and it's too close to call, "In the subway series between the Mets and the Yankees, 45 percent support the Amazins from Flushing to 43 percent for the Bronx Bombers — a virtual tie that requires extra innings to settle, a new Quinnipiac University poll released Friday reveals."  However, as the numbers move outside the Big Apple they still skew very heavily in the Yanks' favor.  Suburbanites and upstaters still embrace the Bronx Bombers as their team of choice by a wide margin.

Gone are days of George Steinbrenner throwing millions upon millions of dollars to buy his way into the post season.  Although the Yankee payroll still sits at a lofty $195 million, a lot of that total represents legacy contracts closer to ending than beginning.  The Yankees in their own way have their Curtis Granderson and Jay Bruce crosses to bear, just more of them.  Come 2019 when most are off the books expect them to return to the free spending ways.  Let’s take a closer look.

Starting Pitching

Big C.C. Sabathia has had an up and down Yankees career, marred by both injuries and drinking that derailed a once stellar resume.  The overall pinstripe body of work doesn’t sound bad – 8 years with 108 wins, a 3.75 ERA and 8 Ks per 9 IP.  However , those numbers are skewed by a good start to his Bronx tenure.  The last four years have been quite pedestrian – 32-29, 4.54 ERA, downticks in strikeouts, upticks in walks, hits, HRs allowed and BAA.  The depth chart has the once ace of the staff now listed as SP3 behind Masahiro Tanaka and Michael Pineda.

The Yankees seem to have a penchant for big hurlers and Michael Pineda is cut from the same oversized mold as Sabathia.  After a solid rookie campaign the Mariners and Yankees did a pitcher for catcher swap, sending young stars with great potential to the other coast.  Jesus Montero has been a major bust with not enough hitting or conditioning to overcome his defensive challenges and to date has only logged one full season in the bigs.  Throw in some attitude problems (throwing an ice cream sandwich at a scout), and you can say the Yankees got the better end of this deal.  Unfortunately Pineda missed two full seasons and part of another due to injury, but when he came back for 13 starts in 2014 he was nothing short of brilliant – 5 wins, 1.89 ERA and a miniscule WHIP of 0.825.  Unfortunately it’s not been sustainable and his past two seasons while mostly healthy have been forgettable – a losing record, and a 4.60 ERA.

Masahiro Tanaka looked to be one of the brilliant Japanese imports when he started his career with a flourish.  His three years for the Yankees have been terrific when healthy, with a combined 39-16 record with a 3.12 ERA.  It’s doubly impressive when you see he’s not a huge strikeout guy either.

Luis Severino is another pitcher who set the expectations bar quite high when he turned in a rookie season with 11 starts, a 5-3 record with a 2.89 ERA and an acceptable but unspectacular ability to keep men off base.  Imagine the disappointment then to follow it up with a season as both a starter and reliever that ended with an ugly 5.89 ERA and upticks in every negative pitching stat.

Chad Green is penciled in as the 5th starter though on Wednesday manager Joe Girardi said he may not carry a traditional fifth starter.  Regardless, Green delivered a “meh” rookie season last year with 4.73 ERA, a .272 BAA, and a high 1.40 WHIP.

The pitching rotation is a combination of Tanaka, seen better days, and hope for rapid turnaround.  It’s not a strength by any means.

Bullpen

As bad as the starting rotation is for the Bronx Bombers, I’ll put their bullpen up against anyone in the game.  Led by the returning Aroldis Chapman, they also feature All-Star Dellin Betances and All Star Tyler Clippard as part of a very solid crew that’s going to be used often almost every game given the dearth of quality among the starters.

Behind them you have Adam Warren who pitched well during his first stint with the Yankees before getting roughed up a bit in Chicago last year.  Lefty Tommy Layne pitched better for the Yankees than he did for the Red Sox last year and this late bloomer has delivered decent quality somewhat anonymously since 2012.  Fellow lefty Chasen Shreve was brilliant for the Braves before becoming a 59 game mainstay in the Yankees pen in 2015, but hit a bump in the road last year.  Still, a career ERA of 3.47 is highly respectable.

Infield

At 1B the Yankees will feature Greg Bird, a guy who showed 40 HR power in a ¼ season trial last year but also a 200K liability.  This spring he appears not only fully healed from his shoulder surgery, but demonstrated power to both fields, flashing good leather at 1B and showing a much improved eye.  He’s definitely one to watch.

Second baseman Starlin Castro is what he is – a free swinger who doesn’t walk, doesn’t run particularly well and plays uneven defense.  However, he liked his introduction to the short porches in Yankee Stadium and turned in some very nice numbers with 21 HRs and a .270 batting average – nice value for a relatively paltry $7.8 million salary.  Unfortunately for the Yankees his paycheck goes up considerably each year through 2020 when, if they exercise their option, he will earn $16 million.

Didi Gregorius turned in a year no one ever expected with 20 HRs, but he’s on the shelf now until at least mid May.  In his stead the team is expected to turn to youngster Ronald Torreyes.  Think Matt Reynolds with a little more speed and a little less power.  He’s simply treading water until Gregorius returns.

At 3B the Yankees are saddled with a rather expensive and unproductive veteran whose better days are behind him in Chase Headley.  He’s now good for about 12 HRs, 60 RBIs and a .255 AVG which is not particularly good value for the $13 million he’s earning.

Perhaps the crown jewel of the infield is young catcher Gary Sanchez.  In just 201 ABs last year he delivered 20 HRs and 42 RBIs while hitting .296.  Add to that his .991 fielding percentage with a nearly 41% success rate throwing out would-be base stealers and all you can say is, “Wow!”

Outfield

The Yankee outfield overall is fairly weak.

In LF you have Brett Gardner, the one-time speedster who has apparently slowed down quite a bit as he hit his 30s.  Last year he delivered 7 HRs, 41 RBIs and 16 SBs (75% success rate).  For about $13 million, that’s not great.

In CF you have Jacoby Ellsbury who fared only slightly better than his LF counterpart.  He provided 9 HRs, 56 RBIs, a .263 average and 20 SBs…not bad, but certainly not worth nearly $22 million!

Right field is supposed to belong to oversized slugger Aaron Judge.  He’s another whiff artist whose brief trial was not the stuff of legends.  He hit 4 HRs and drove in 10 over 84 ABs with a .179 average.  The real problem was his 48% strikeout rate which makes Curtis Granderson, Lucas Duda and old friend Kirk Nieuwenhuis downright selective by comparison.  They’re handing him the role this year based upon a minor league track record of as many as 20 HRs in a season.  However, defensive specialist Aaron Hicks has had a solid spring and Judge may not have done enough to warrant the starting job which makes him parallel Michael Conforto’s likely fate – returning to AAA so he can play everyday.

DH

Here’s a real wildcard for the Yankees – Matt Holliday.  He’s now 37 and not the force he once was, but even at age 36 he was still able to deliver the Cardinals 20 HRs and 62 RBIs in 382 ABs.  The troubling number was his batting average of just .246, but Yankee Stadium often revives players’ number a’la Coors Field.  Although he’s a career .303 hitter, he hasn’t approached that plateau since 2013.  Backing him up is NL home run leader Chris Carter who despite 41 HRs and 94 RBIs is slated to be a bench player at this point for the Bronx Bombers.

Outlook

The Yankees may have some good pop from four players – Bird, Castro, Gregorius (when he returns) and Sanchez, but it gets pretty ugly after that.  Throw in some probable 30 HR numbers collectively out of the DH position and that’s 6 out of 9 spots in the batting order with some good potential, but then you have Headley, Gardner and Ellsbury all in major decline.  If the younger players can click, they might provide decent offense.

The starting pitching, however, is pretty mediocre and that strong bullpen is likely to get overworked during the course of the year.  With improvements in Boston I would expect them to take the division, followed by slugging Toronto and underrated Baltimore, leaving the Yanks and Rays to fight it out for the cellar.  Given the relative health of the Yankees over the Rays, I give them the edge for 4th place with the Rays pulling up the rear.
