1st round 2008 draftee, and 22nd overall, , SS Reese Havens, has begun the conversion to second base. He is currently playing that position in the AWL, which I'm sure is directed from the Mets.
Yes, Havens has not had the best of starts in the Mets organization, but most of his problems have been either nagging minor injuries and ground balls he had trouble with at short. He only batted .247 for St. Lucie in 2009 (the exact same batting average he had for Brooklyn the year before), but he did show some power, hitting 14 home runs and knocking in 52 runs in 97 games.
The 14 homers ranked him 6th in the league, which I'm sure every Met fan would take from any player at any level.
Moving him to second base gives the Mets their first potential power second baseman since The Fonz and really changes things down in the minors.
Let's first take a look at 2B and project who goes where:
There are 16 Mets on my current board who play second base for the Mets in the minor leagues. I currently only have five of them projected to actual teams:
Jonathan Malo - I have him in Buffalo
Hector Pellot - I had him as the starting second basemen in Binghamton, but now he's re-projected as a utility infielder
Reese Havens - the next step is second base for Binghamton, though the Mets might choose to send him back to St. Lucie to play that position there. I don't see it. A first round draft pick ought to be able to work on his defense at AA, while his wood bat continues to develop.
Josh Satin - has earned his bump to A+.
Alonzo Harris - I've got him in Savannah, though some project him for Brooklyn.
The others, IMO, will determine their 2010 fate in spring training. They are: Andy Green, Ray Van Gurp, Marshall Davis , James Ewing, Yucary De La Cruz, Luis Rivera, Ignacio Medrano, Josh Peterson, Kyle Suire, Jose Coronado, and Nick Giarraputo .
Green, Rivera, and Medrano will probably be gone, Peterson will make the AAA squad, and I have no idea what to do with Coronado. Suire will return from his 50-gamer and Giarraputo played well for Savannah, but where does he go?
SS:
I have 11 Mets playing minor league shortstop in 2010, with only two projected, now that we have moved Havens.
Prospect Ruben Tejada will move on to AAA (if he's not traded first), and Wilmer Flores will play every day at St. Lucie. Past that, everything is up in the air after moving Havens and the fatc that Robbie Shields went under for TJS. That leaves on the extended camp portion of my list: Javier Castillo, Argenis Reyes, Jacob Eigsti, Ryan Mollica, Luis Nieves, Wilfredo Tovar, Gered Mochizuki, and Miquel Tejada.
Probably 86'd are Reyes and Eigsti, and only Mochizuki has showed some promise.
Look for the Mets to add at both these positions in the 2010 draft.

Mack, where is Valdespin?
V-Spin is playing winter ball for the Mets
where do you think he is in 2010...Lucie or Savannah? Somewhere else?
I meant to ask what Mash asked; where is he in your projections?
IMO - he's definitely at St. Lucie, if the current Savannah management stays the same.
The boy can hit
