He will stick at center field and his arm continues to get stronger as he has been clocked at 91 mph from the outfield with accuracy. He has plus speed (6.61/60) and his bat speed is electric. The 6’-1”, 185 pound right-hander will gain more power as he matures and he has superstar written all over him. Sunday afternoon in Queens, Anthony Recker hit a three run
homer (5) to snap a 2 all tie, the Mets beat the Phillies 6-5. Dillon Gee started for the Mets and the
Phillies took a 1-0 lead in the top of the 4th on a RBI double by
Ryan Howard. The Mets took a 2-1 lead in
the bottom of the 5th on a RBI double by Matt den Dekker and an RBI
single by David Wright. The Phils tied the game at 2 in the 6th when
Ryan Howard clubbed a solo homer his 20th on the year. But in the
bottom of the 6th Recker connected for the three run blast to give the
Mets the lead for good. The Phils made a
game of it with an RBI single by Jimmy Rollins in the 7th and a solo
homer by Domonic Brown (8) in the 8th. Brown went 4 for 4 on the day with the
homer. The Mets took a 6-4 lead in the 8th
when Dilson Herrera hit a seeing eye single up the middle with the infield in
to score Kirk Nieuwenhuis ( For Herrera, his first ML RBI) Wilmer Flores went 3
for 4 and had a few sparklers in the field for the Mets; Wright added two hits
as well. Gee gets the win improving to 6-6 going 6 innings allowing 7 hits 3
runs (all earned) walking 3 and striking out 7. Jeurys Familia gave up the solo
dinger to Brown in the 8th. Jenrry Mejia pitched the 9th
for this 21st save, but did allow an RBI single to Grady Sizemore to
make it a 1 run game. AJ Burnett takes
the loss for the Phils; he falls to 7-15. The Mets take 2 of 3 from the
Phillies. The Mets are 64-73 on the year
and 33-35 at home. Next up the Mets start a 6 game road swing. Labor Day afternoon is the first of 3 in
Miami. Zach Wheeler (9-9 3.44) goes for the Mets, Henderson Alvarez (10-6 2.75) goes for the Fish.

New York closes out August with a twinbill at Candlestick against
the Giants. In the opener, Tom Seaver picks up win #19 with an 11K, CG shutout,
as the Mets win 8-0. Offensively, they made the most of 11 singles and Ron
Swoboda’s RBI double against four Giant pitchers. In Atlanta, Chicago won by 4
over the Braves.
The Mets entered the nightcap with a chance to trim another ½ game
off the Cubs NL East lead. San Fran scored a pair in the bottom of the 1st
off Jim McAndrew but he silenced the Giant bats after that early outburst. The
visiting New Yorkers tied it up in the 7th when Cleon Jones led off
with a single was driven home two batters later on Swoboda’s 6th
longball of 1969.
In the 11th Tug McGraw put runners on 1st
and 2nd with none out and was relieved by Ron Taylor. After a wild
pitch and intentional walk, Taylor unintentionally walked Jim Davenport to
force in the winning run. The 3-2 loss dropped the Mets 4.5 back entering September.
During August the Mets (76-54) picked up two games on division leading Chicago
(83-52)-rebounding from a mediocre July with a 21-10 mark on the month. 32
games remained on the 1969 regular season schedule, including four against the
Cubs.

Wheaton College rising senior and right-handed pitcher Mike Gibbons (Simsbury, Conn./Avon Old Farms) has signed a free agent contract with the New York Mets of Major League Baseball (MLB) for the 2015 season.
"It's difficult to find the words to match the current emotions that I am feeling from signing with the New York Mets. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity, and something I have always dreamed about. I am ecstatic to be able to represent Wheaton College and Wheaton's baseball program at the professional level," said Gibbons. "Coach [Eric] Podbelski and coach [Ryan] Parker have helped mold me into becoming the pitcher that I am today, and I am grateful to have played under them for three years at Wheaton. My family has given me the love and support to achieve my goals, and the ability to attend a college with superb academics and athletics."
Last season, Gibbons appeared in 12 games (nine starts) and posted a 4-1 record with a 1.89 earned run average (ERA) alongside 37 strikeouts in 57 innings pitched. Gibbons also held opponents to a .203 batting average and induced an 11.84 groundouts per game ratio. LAST GAME: The Binghamton Mets blew their third straight ninth-inning lead and fell to the Richmond Flying Squirrels, 7-6, on Saturday night at the Diamond.Randy Fontanez gave up three runs (two earned) without getting an out in the ninth. The B-Mets had taken the lead with five runs in eighth inning. Travis Taijeron went 3-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and three RBI. Brian Burgamy and Dustin Lawley each collected two base knocks. T.J. Rivera went 1-for-4 and extended his hitting streak to a season-long 11 games. Hansel Robles struck out three and didn’t allow a run in two innings of relief. Binghamton has lost four straight games.
BINGHAMTON STARTER: RHP Gabriel Ynoa makes his 11th start of the season and his first against Richmond. The righty took the loss in his last outing. He gave up five runs on six hits and struck out seven batters and tossed a complete-game seven innings in game one of a doubleheader against New Britain on Tuesday, August 26. Binghamton lost the game 5-1. Ynoa has had an up-and-down season with the B-Mets. He’s surrendered two runs or less five times and four runs or more on five other occasions. The La Vega, Dominican Republic native was signed as a minor league free agent on November 19, 2009.
RICHMOND STARTER: LHP Ty Blach is on the hill for the 25thtime this season and the third against Binghamton. The southpaw is coming off a loss in his last outing He gave up three runs (two earned) and struck out five in 5.2 innings on Tuesday, August 26 against Altoona. The Flying Squirrels lost the game, 3-2. Blach is 0-1 in his two other appearances against the B-Mets. He’s allowed one run on nine hits and has tallied eight walks in 12 innings this season. The Denver, Colorado native was taken by San Francisco in the fifth round of the 2012 draft out of Creighton University.
SPEED BUMPS: Binghamton lost their fourth straight game on Saturday and their fifth their last five chances. The B-Mets have had the lead in each of the four losses. That includes blowing three ninth inning advantages. The team has been held to three runs or less three times during the stretch. They lead the league in home runs with 122, but have hit just one since August 23 (nine games).
SEE YOU WEDNESDAY: Binghamton’s loss, coupled with a Portland win, on Friday guaranteed the Sea Dogs home-field advantage in the Eastern Division Championship Series. NYSEG Stadium hosts the first two games of the best-of-five starting Wednesday at 6:35 PM. Binghamton is in the postseason for the consecutive seasons for the first time in franchise history. The team was swept by Trenton in the Eastern Division Championship Series in 2013.
BULLPEN BLUNDER: The B-Mets bullpen gave up three more runs on Saturday to bring their total to 15 in the last four games (13 innings). The unit’s ERA has risen from 3.63 in 3.80 in that time. They have blown their last three save opportunities.
T.J. ON A TEAR: B-Mets INF T.J. Rivera went 1-for-4 on Saturday to extend his hitting streak to a season-long eleven games. The 25-year-old is hitting .537 (22-for-41). That includes eight multi-hit performances and three games with three base knocks. Rivera leads the team with a .370 average in 52 games this season.
AUGUST LOOK BACK: Binghamton wraps up it’s August schedule on Sunday with a chance to win it’s 19thgame in the month. That would tie for the most wins the team has had in any month this season. The B-Mets also won 19 games in June. Binghamton has not had a losing record in any month this season.

The Gulf Coast League has no playoffs (how odd) and the Penn and Appalachian
League playoffs will include Brooklyn apparently (lead wild card by 2 games
through Wednesday) but not likely Kingsport (one game from elimination).
It has been a fascinating endeavor to rank the guppies (top dogs in the making) and I will have my final ratings next week with the regular seasons ending and since I consider the playoffs to count, and those will happen this coming week.
Met fans are already excited about the prospects like Dilson Herrera, Brandon Nimmo, Thor, and others who played on the 4 full season teams, but don't stop there - we should be excited about the talent evident on the 3 short season teams.

Each week, besides the general talent rankings, I have focused on an aspect of
minor league talent.
This week, it will be the elites of the short season relief corps. We have almost as many firemen as the NYC Fire Department!! Some guys were used as starters and relievers - if they had at least several relief outings, and pitched superbly, they are considered!
Here
are my favorite 12 relievers and 5 hybrids (starter/relievers) with details
following. I favor guys with low ERAs and WHIPs and high K rates. It is a
tribute to these teams that so many good relievers emerged. I tried really hard to keep it to 10 – could
not do it! There were even a few guys
who relieved well, but just a notch below, who I left off the list. The relief pitching cadre was simply

guys, who compiled hugely impressive #'s:
Brad Wieck is big...6'9" big...and throws hard...95 MPH hard. You can't teach imposing and 95. Newsday ran a nice feature on him very recently. In it, they noted that Wieck, 22, was a 7th rounder who led collegiate ball with 15.3 K/9. Wieck’s teammates have endearingly nicknamed him The Big Donkey. Newsday added that scouts say Wieck hides the ball well in his delivery and has good arm-side run, which causes the fastball to tail away from righthanders, and that his repertoire includes a changeup and a four-seamer, with a sweeping slider as his "go-to" pitch.

Kelly Secrest, a 6’0” 215 lefty hard
throwing 10th rounder, has been on the Top 20 list since I first started it
several weeks ago. Also had highly impressive relief stats, nearly identical to
those of Wieck.
Shane Bay - more successful than
Jason, and a whole lot cheaper. The 22 year old 6’2”, 225 lefty has been in the system since
2011, but only 51 career innings to date.
Lower minors saves leader with 14.
Dave Roseboom – the 6’3” 215 pen pal is
not reputed to be a flamethrower, but has had quite a successful first
season. The 17th round, 22 year old lefty has put up terrific #’s this
year.
Matt Blackham also put up terrific #s
as a 29th rounder. The
diminutive 5’11”, 150 righty has simply been impressive in Kingsport.
Alex Palsha - like Shane Bay, but
further down the food chain in the GCL, the 22 year old, 27th round
righty saved...and saved...and saved some more. Ten in all. Alex got a recent promo to Kingsport. Nice job.
Nabil Crismatt – I was just hoping he’d keep
pitching well, so I could add him to the list because…I dig the name. There, I said it. He’s just 19, born on Christmas Day
1994! He has had two years in the DSL,
last year was terrific in relief (1.33), and in his last 10 games this year,
terrific (0.56, 22 K in 16 inn). This
6’1”, 200 righty should be really interesting to watch in 2015.
Jimmy Duff is another 6’6” guy
(what’s in the water?) out of Garden City who is not considered a flamethrower
but who nonetheless dominated, with excellent control and a solid sinker. Just
20 – interesting guy to watch going forward.
Ismael Tijerina is an infielder (776 at
bats, .235) turned pitcher, who turned pitcher this year quite nicely, thank
you. He just turned 25, so time is not
on his side, so who knows? Impressive
transition so far.
Josh Prevost was a 5th round 6-8,
225 lb righthander who has pitched really well, but with a lower K rate than
others. Let’s see what the 22 year old
out of Seton Hall does in 2015.
Cameron Griffin is a 6’3” 200 lb righty
drafted in the 13th round last year.
Pitched well last year, better this year, so by extrapolation the 23 yr
old should be friggin’ dynamite in 2015!
Mike Hepple, a 24 year old, 6’6”, 210
righty, in some years could have been Brooklyn's premier reliever. This
year, he had plenty of company, with a great Cyclone relief corps, so he barely
edged onto this list.
HYBRIDS: Now for a few words on the hybrids – these are indecisive chaps who simply can’t make up their minds whether they want to start or relieve - so they do both, remarkably well, mind you:
Martires Arias, listed at 6’7” but who I read
elsewhere is 6’11”, has had a marvelous season (the stats speak for
themselves), starting out as a 23 year old in the GCL (which on the surface did
not appear to be a promising scenario) but simply pitched the heck out of the
ball there and in Brooklyn after his promotion.
It should be truly interesting to see what he does in 2015.
Kevin Canelon has simply pitched terrific as a
lefty in the GCL. He is certainly one to
watch going forward.
Scarlyn Reyes is one of those guys…out of the Dominican, he joined the DSL last year as a 23 year old! Where was he before that?? Now 24, the 6’3”, 190 hombre has put together a fine year, and his combined DSL/Bklyn stats for the 2 years are strong: 1.83, nearly a K per inning. 2015 should be a telling season for him.
Scarlyn Reyes is one of those guys…out of the Dominican, he joined the DSL last year as a 23 year old! Where was he before that?? Staying
in Reyes mode for a moment, Persio Reyes
is a 21 year old slender 6’2” 150 righty who has been in the system since 2010,
who’s already logged 250 innings in the organization. Repeated Kingsport this year, with much
improved results (ERA from 4.40 to 1.35).
Innings down in 2014, presumably due to an early season injury (his
first game was July 21). But he pitched
so well, he forced his way onto the list/
Ty Badamo was added to my first
list due to his proximity in Suffolk County to where I lived until
recently. But that is good for a week, then performance is needed...and a
guy with my favorite initials - TB - acquitted himself admirably. Badamo brought GREAT ammo to the mound this
year!
