I Wouldn’t Be Surprised…
1. If you see Fernando Martinez playing first base in 2011. No. I didn’t say he will replace Ike Davis, but the system is currently without a Plan B for this position and Martinez has had a hard time staying healthy playing in the outfield.
2. If Reese Havens doesn’t begin the season on time. As I understand, his back problems continue and the Mets may want to take their time here. Havens’ bat potential at second base is at all-star levels and the Mets don’t need him until he’s fully healed.
3. If Oliver Perez makes the 25-man out of spring training. You just can’t throw away eleven million dollars.
4. If Luis Castillo is released. Six mil seems to be the limit a sane team would eat. Some players never are accepted by the fans and press and Castillo seems to have fallen deeply into this category.
5. Chris Capuano is the opening day SP5. The Mets will need someone to hold the fort down until Johan Santana comes back. There’s not much left out there on the free agent market and you just might see Capuano given the task to get through six innings every five games.

It all makes sense. F-Mart still has the bat to play first base and if his mobility is permanently limited by his arthritic knee, now is the time to get him reps. I can see the Mets eating Castillo's contract, especially with cheap multiple in-house options at second base. Perez will be a tougher pill to swallow. At this point, I'm on board with the Perez-as-lefty-specialist movement.
Thanks Jack.
My thoughts on this post aren't too popular today over on Mets Blog.
One thing... my definition of a "Plan B" is a player thatwould be needed to play a position in case the player already playing that position is hurt, traded, kidnapped... you get the picture.
I am not saying that Ike Davis should be traded or moved. I just speculated that F-Mart would be the perfect "replacement" for the loss of a key player.
Nick Evans, Zach Lutz, Daniel Murphy, and Lucas Duda have all plyed first, but none have the bat speed and power potential of Martinez.
It also would increase any opportunity to include him in a trade some day.
Like my grandfather used to say, "don't let the turkeys get you down."
