2013: (R) .204/.298/.327, 1 HR, 7 RBI, 0 SB (0%), 7 BB, 10 K
This year's 1st round pick will slot in nicely at #17. Poor kid is still mesmerized by the fact that he's even in professional baseball. Eventually the first time jitters will pass and Smith will be begin to show us what he is really capable of. One very encouraging sign already, albeit a small sample size, is his K:BB ratio after the first two weeks with the GCL Mets. Also 4 of his 10 hits so far have been of the extra base variety. This kid has a long way to go and a lot to grow before we consider him for Top 10 consideration. Let him bask in the moment for the rest of the year before we really start to judge him a bit more when he gets assigned to Brooklyn next year.

Brooklyn next year? What a waste for a 1st round pick. Look a Cecchini, waits for SS ball and 1 minor injury and he misses a large chunk of the season. Put him in Savannah and let him play with Cecchini, so they can catch up with Nimmo since it doesn't look like hes moving to St. Lucie until next season.
It just doesn't work tat way for the Mets, Mr. Nodes. They move these high school kids as if they are attending college.
Think of it this way... they would have played three years for a university if they went that way.
This way... rookie ball, upper rookie ball, A-ball..
Either way, first year would be in A+

There is just no reason to rush an 18 year old kid. Let them mature in the lower levels, add some muscle and when they hit there 20's then start progressing them.

Smith is HARDLY a waste for a 1st round pick. Any claim like this would be ridiculous for ANY prospect before they reach AA.
That's where we will learn if a pick is wasted or not.
I think he means leaving him in short season ball is a waste for a player with that much talent. The preference is playing him in a full-season league where he can get longer looks at quality pitching and in-game experience.
Stephen, I'm sure you are right, but these kids are coming off a long summer season and their high school season as well... the first taste of what we call "the grind" is a rough one... travel, team buses, away from home, etc.
Letting them finish out their first pro season inside the Mets complex is a good thing
Understood, Mack. Just clarifying what TheCloser said. The way he wrote it, it looks like Smith was a "waste" and Smith is far from a wasted pick.
Of the trio (Cecchini, Nimmo, Smith), I like Smith the best and it's not really even close.

I guess I would have taken three RHP but those were the best players available as I saw it. I thought Giolito wasn't going to sign and if that actually had been the case, I would have taken Hawkins.
