PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. (July 9, 2018) – The Charlotte Stone Crabs clipped the St. Lucie Mets 3-2 on Monday at Charlotte Sports Park.
The Mets trailed by two runs with two outs in the top of the ninth but managed to get the tying run to third base. Crabs reliever Zack Mozingo got J.J. Franco to ground out to short to end the game.
Anthony Kay made his second start for St. Lucie and put together his second quality start. He allowed two runs and six hits over six innings. He walked two and struck out five.
The Stone Crabs broke a scoreless tie in the fifth on a RBI triple by Jake Fraley. Jermaine Palacios then lifted a sac fly to plate Fraley and make it 2-0.
Andres Gimenez hit a leadoff home run in the top of the sixth to make it 2-1. It was his sixth of the year to tie for the team lead.
Charlotte scored a crucial run in the seventh. Fraley worked a leadoff walk from Seth Davis and later scored on a two-out single from Tristan Gray to put the Stone Crabs up 3-1.
In the top of the ninth the Mets were down to their last strike with the bases empty. Ian Strom kept the game going with a bloop double. Luis Carpio knocked Strom home with a single to make it 3-2. Gimenez singled to send Carpio to third as the tying run. However, Mozingo retired Franco to escape with his second save.
T.J. Rivera went 1 for 4 with a double as he continued his rehab assignment.
Jeremy Vasquez, a Martin County High School graduate who was a first half All Star for Low-A Columbia, was promoted to St. Lucie. He made his debut at first base and went 1 for 4 with a double.
Charlotte starter Kenny Rosenberg earned the win on his 23rd birthday. He pitched five scoreless innings.
Josh Lowe went 1 for 2 with a triple and two walks.
Gimenez extended his hitting streak to eight games with the home run. Ali Sanchez notched a single. H has hit safely in all six of his game with the Mets.
