Joe DeMayo and Jacob Resnick took questions from Fans.  Regarding Ronny Mauricio Joe DeMayo said - "I would have him play shortstop for now. With that said, it is obvious the shortstop position is locked in here until the 2030s and Mauricio will have to play somewhere else if he is to be an everyday player for the Mets at some point. Scouts believe the most likely spot long-term is third base like you mentioned. However, there has been word that they may test him out in left field as well as second base."

The Mets' offseason acquisition of Gary Carter pays immediate dividends when he connects for a walk-off home run in the bottom of the tenth inning, giving his new team a 6-5 victory over St. Louis on Opening Day at Shea Stadium. The 31 year-old All-Star catcher is the first player to end his first contest with a New York team with a round-tripper.

1985

Tom Seaver establishes a big-league record with his 15th Opening Day assignment, earning the victory in the White Sox's 4-2 win over Milwaukee at County Stadium. The right-hander, who also got the first-day nods from the Mets (1968-77, 1983) and Reds (1978-79, 1981), will extend the mark previously held by Walter Johnson of the Washington Senators to 16 next season.

Baseball Reference:

1987 - Gary Carter drives in his 1,000th career run with an 8th-inning single that scores Lenny Dykstra as the Mets defeat Pittsburgh, 4 - 2.

1990: The Pittsburgh Pirates defeat the New York Mets, 12 - 3, at Shea Stadium. It is the Mets' first loss in a season opener at home in 21 years.

Mack said the Conforto move was wrong. It was, but he got away with it, and like Harry Reid once said after lying about Mitt Romney in the 2012 election, "well, it worked, didn't it?"

If the Mets are smart, they will start Jake Saturday and Stro on Sunday. It would be real nice to be 4-2.

Yermin Mercedes 485 foot shot? 15 for 27 in his rookie debut? Wild.

They had Trout at 441, even though it hit a school building across the street from the park? SMH

Walker pitched great, and it was nice seeing Edwin get the W.

Walker can really HIT. After he looked like a real hitter grounding into a DP, I looked and he is a .200 lifetime hitter. Jake's got a challenger.

Betances is like fine china - that just fell off the table. So glad he has a $1 million player option for last season. He may have an impingement, but he is impinging on their season and budget.

Tom,

About Conforto, if intentionally getting hit by the pitch was something he did all the time, I would complain about what happened yesterday. I don't think yesterday was intentional. I think the pitch fooled him and he reacted oddley.

Players like Chase Utley, on the other hand, constantly turned into pitches to get the HBP - time and time again - and was never called for it.

On Conforto: Bases loaded. One out. Tie score. Bottom of the 9th. Home opener. And you LOOK at three strikes? One day after doing the exact same thing? Pathetic.

I really hope they give him a day of on Saturday against the lefty. Be good to get Almora a start.

Please, please, please don't sit Dom or Nimmo because of the lefty -- not when Conforto is going so badly and is the one who hits worst against LHP.

I suspect that MC is wigged out by the contract stuff. Boras pushing him as a $200 million player, busily preparing the binder as we type. Got to be some weird voodoo. He'll get through it and return to the Very Good (not great) player he has always been.

I am plugging Dom into the three-hole, sliding Conforto down. They are pitching around Lindor. Another option would be McNeil #2 and Lindor #3 (Pete protecting him).

Probably early to mess too much with the lineup but I don't like all those K's with runners on base (Nimmo & Lindor will be on a LOT).

Jimmy. This lineup Ks way to much. They don't shorten their swing with 2 strikes. Delwyn Young - Fonzie's hitting coach in Brooklyn constantly preached putting the ball in play with 2 ks - especially with men on base. I have not been able to see if he is still with the organization.

I think the last person I saw get hit by a pitch to win a game was Homer Simpson, when he pinch-hit for Strawberry, to lead the Springfield Power Plant to a 51-50 win over the Shelbyville Power Plant. Only, Homer got hit in the head and knocked unconscious.

Come to think of it, Don Mattingly was supposed to play in that game, but Mr. Burns fired him for not shaving his sideburns.

John, it's the same all around baseball.

When you do the analysis, K's generally don't correlate to Runs Scored on a global scale (i.e., teams can strike out a lot and still lead the league in runs).

But, yes.

It's one of the things I loved about Daniel Murphy (who Sandy hated) and Jeff McNeil (who I bet Sandy dislikes). He doesn't like the swingers -- but those are the guys who put the ball in play. Once you are at two strikes, and need to protect, you are already in trouble.

Conforto needs to clear his head. But he is so streaky, can't hit LHP, and strikes out a ton. When he came up I had hoped that he'd be the next Keith, the guy we can stick in the 3-hole for the 10 years. I've lowered my expectations. Now in his 7th season, across more than 2,000 ABs, he's revealed himself to be a .259/.357/.467 hitter. A very good player, a dangerous bat, a one-time All-Star who will strike out 150 times a season.

I like him. I don't think he's my #3 hitter. Actually think Jeff and Dom are better hitters.

Jimmy, that is what I am talking about - pathetic indeed.
Conforto has to be aggressive. I watch the Mets' pitchers pitch to hitters and the pitchers seem to encounter few easy ABs. It seems like when Conforto is up in tough situations, too often the pitcher controls him.

At times, I look and all I see is Kirk Nieuwenhuis in those situations.

And it's why I like Nimmo more. The pitcher KNOWS he is not going to get "pathetic" when facing Nimmo.

I sometimes wonder is Nimmo mesmerizes the pitchers. He sure makes them sweat. And throw a lot of balls. He has a remarkable eye at the plate. Inch outside? He reads it, and takes it as a ball. That is a gift. I used to admire Keith's eye when he played. Nimmo's seems even better, sharper.

Jimmy, I would also think strongly about extending Dom Smith at the right time. I think he is going to be a much better career hitter than Conforto, ignoring his overweight, not ready-for-prime-time debut. He is a transformed athlete and very dangerous hitter, who I believe will continue to get better.

He probably will be back at first base next year with the DH (sorry, Pete).

As you know, I am a very big Nimmo fan -- been arguing that he's underrated (right here!) for some time. Glad to see him enjoy a strong start.

But let's be real. He whiffs a lot, too, because of his deep-count approach and his willingness to take close pitches. He can get passive at times, too: a delicate balance.

Mike is streaky and right now he's a mess. Time for him to clear his head, get to work, take Saturday off against the lefty (pinch hit when the right is on the mound), and work his way back.

I'm more concerned, short-term, on the fact that teams are clearly pitching around Lindor. Put Dom behind him and either change their minds or make 'em pay.
