Remember 1969: Who Won? Mets trades through the years: 1998

Mets Trades through the years:  Who Won?

Moving on back from the World Series year of 2000, 1998 actually helped set up the next two years very well.

November 1997 thru October 1998

 (1)  New York Mets traded Alex Ochoa to the Minnesota Twins for Rich Becker  (Dec 12, 1997)

 (2)  New York Mets traded Fletcher Bates and Scott Comer to the Florida Marlins for DennisCook  (Dec 18, 1997)

 (3)  New York Mets traded Carl Everett to the Houston Astros for John Hudek  (Dec 22, 1997)

 (4)  New York Mets traded Roberto Petagine to the Cincinnati Reds for Yuri Sanchez  (Feb 05 1998)

(5)  New York Mets traded A.J. Burnett, Jesus Sanchez and Robert Stratton to the Florida Marlins for Al Leiter and Ralph Milliard  (Feb 06, 1998)

(6)  New York Mets traded Juan Acevedo to the St. Louis Cardinals for Rigo Beltran  (Mar 29, 1998)

(7)  New York Mets traded Lindsay Gulin to the Seattle Mariners for Rick Wilkins  (May 12, 1998)

(8)  New York Mets traded Preston Wilson, Geoff Goetz and Ed Yarnall to the Florida Marlins for Mike Piazza  (May 22, 1998)

(9)  New York Mets traded Dave Mlicki and Greg McMichael to the Los Angeles Dodgers for Hideo Nomo and Brad Clontz  (Jun 04, 1998)

(10)  New York Mets traded Shawn Gilbert to the St. Louis Cardinals for Wayne Kirby  (Jun 10, 1998)

(11)  New York Mets traded John Hudek to the Cincinnati Reds for Lenny Harris  (Jul 03, 1998)

(12)  New York Mets traded Brian Bohanon to the Los Angeles Dodgers for Greg McMichael  (Jul 10, 1998)

(13)  New York Mets traded Bill Pulsipher to the Milwaukee Brewers for Mike Kinkade (Jul 31, 1998)

(14)  New York Mets traded Leo Estrella to the Toronto Blue Jays for Tony Phillips  (Jul 31, 1998)

(15)  New York Mets traded Bernard Gilkey and Nelson Figueroa to the Arizona Diamondbacks for JorgeFabregas and Willie Blair  (Jul 13, 1998)

Notes:   Obviously The best two of the fifteen trades in 1998 were the deals with the Marlins.   The Piazza trade is one of the top five in Mets history.    The Mets didn't totally fleece the Marlins, as both Burnett and Wilson had decent careers after the trade, but at the time, the Mets made out very well with Milliard .. er Leiter and Piazza.

Trade 10 got them their first look at their 2022 first base coach.   Let’s hope he has more success as a coach than he did as a player.

The Ochoa-Becker deal was a loser for the Mets.  Becker did nothing while Ochoa went on to be a useful player for several years.

Dennis Cook was excellent as a Met, too: 25-13, 3.86.

That trading away of Carl Everett was brutally bad. Check out his 1998-2003 seasons.

It almost made it a 50-50 overall trade season, even with getting Piazza and Leiter.

We did lose Burnett, Preston and Everett. That was quite a trio. I, like everyone else, was thrilled we got Piazza. But we lost a lot too.

Carl Everett got involved in allegations that he abused his kid when the kid showed up at Mets day camp with bruises. The Wilpons were never ones to ride out controversy. I remember the game I was at when he hit a grand slam with two outs and two strikes to tie a game against the Expos.

Alex Ochoa was the main piece of the first Bobby Bonilla trade to the Orioles back in 1993 (I suppose we'll get to that one soon). One of those five-tool players that the Mets are famous for having in the minors, but never quite translate to big leaguers (for them, anyhow). Remember the scouting reports showing he had a cannon for a throwing arm. He did...it was very strong, just not accurate.

Bob, I guess Carl became a model father with his subsequent teams. Let's face it - the Wilpons did lots of stupid things.

Boy, I forgot about AJ Burnett's accomplishments. 321 career decisions, 2,513 strikeouts and what I like most is he had a losing record with the Yankees and was just 8-18 with one of my least favorite teams, the Phillies.
